One of the important themes that emerged from today’s Healthcare Leaders of New York (HLNY) educational program, “The Future of Long-Term Care: Workforce, Capacity, and the Changing Continuum of Care,” was the need to develop the next generation of leaders in long-term care and aging services. Our conversation reinforced that addressing the future workforce isn’t only about filling vacancies today. It is also about creating pathways for students, early-career professionals, and established healthcare professionals to better understand the opportunities that exist within long-term care and to develop the knowledge and skills needed to lead this increasingly important part of the healthcare continuum. For those who may have been inspired by today’s discussion and are interested in exploring this area further, I wanted to share a resource highlighted by one of our panelists. Stony Brook University Program in Public Health offers an online, asynchronous 15-credit Advanced Graduate Certificate in Aging Populations and Healthcare Administration, designed to prepare professionals for leadership roles in nursing homes and community care. The program can also help fulfill the academic requirements toward New York State Nursing Home Administrator licensure. A fitting continuation of today’s conversation: the future of long-term care will depend not only on how we respond to the challenges facing the field today, but on how well we prepare the leaders who will take it forward. And just like that we have launched our next year of Biol 117 "Considering Health Professions" at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill This course, created in 2019 with @Dr. Jean Desaix is designed to help pre-health students explore their options and find their path in healthcare. This year, we welcomed our largest cohort yet—440 future health professionals! 🙌 I cannot believe that number. It was humbling. BIO 117 is about more than choosing a profession. It’s about helping students understand the incredible range of careers in healthcare—and, importantly, why the future of healthcare depends on #teamwork. From the very beginning, students are introduced to the value of interprofessional education (#IPE). Here’s to the next generation of nurses, physicians, pharmacists, social workers, PTs, OTs, CLS, dentists, public health professionals, and so many other health professionals—and to building a healthcare workforce that knows how to work together. Healthcare Discovery has long been an important part of how MMDC introduces students to careers in healthcare. This year marked a new chapter as MMDC partnered with Baptist Health Sciences University to lead the course, giving rising high school seniors the opportunity to explore healthcare career pathways through one of the region's premier healthcare education institutions. By experiencing the program on campus, students gained firsthand insight into the many opportunities available in healthcare and learned more about the education and training that can help them achieve their goals. Partnerships like this create meaningful opportunities for students to explore their interests early, connect with higher education, and begin building a pathway toward rewarding healthcare careers. One of the things that continually impresses me about our faculty in the Fanshawe School of Health Sciences and Public Safety is the impact they have beyond the classroom. Congratulations to Jenn Doyle, Program Coordinator for Fanshawe College's Paramedic Program, on the publication of her research in the International Journal of Paramedicine. This work was previously presented at the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians (CAEP) conference and is now available in print. Faculty like Jenn are not only preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals, they are actively contributing to research that advances healthcare practice, informs decision-making, and strengthens patient care. One of the most important lessons we can teach future healthcare professionals is that caring for patients extends beyond the bedside, the clinic, or the operating room. It also means advocating for policies that improve healthcare access, strengthen the workforce, and remove barriers that affect the patients and communities we serve. At Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences, we believe advocacy is an essential part of professional practice. That's why our students have opportunities to engage in the legislative process early in their education. Last week, members of our Physician Assistant Class of 2027 led by their Director of Clinical Education Megan Ady, met with representatives from Congressman Ben Cline, Senator Tim Kaine, and Senator Mark Warner to discuss two important federal bills: the Professional Student Degree Act and the EMPOWER (Educating Medical Professionals and Optimizing Workforce Efficiency and Readiness) for Health Act. I was especially proud to learn that our students' preparation, professionalism, and thoughtful discussions were met with overwhelming support and a willingness to consider cosponsorship of these important initiatives. Advocacy is a responsibility shared by every healthcare profession. Whether we are caring for one patient or helping shape policies that impact thousands, our voices matter. Developing those leadership skills during professional education prepares graduates to become not only exceptional clinicians, but also champions for their patients, their professions, and the future of healthcare. Rural North Carolina faces critical healthcare provider shortages—and solving it takes a clear, long-term vision. That’s where NC AHEC and NC Department of Health and Human Services' Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP) align! Both are working to build that essential rural healthcare workforce. NC AHEC’s Health Careers program creates a pathway for students across North Carolina to become academically prepared for careers in health care. We’ve designed that pathway for a student to progress through their pre-high school and high school years (Pathways program), post high school years (NC AHEC Scholars program), and during and post college years (Student Services, AHEC Housing and Continuing Professional Development).
