What happens to your private medical insurance when you make a claim? One of the questions I’m asked most often is: “If I make a claim on my private medical insurance, will my premium go up?” The answer isn’t always straightforward — and this is where understanding how your policy works really matters. When you make a claim, several things can potentially affect your policy at renewal: 🔹 Your claims history – Some policies take your individual claims experience into account when calculating future premiums. 🔹 The type of underwriting – Different underwriting arrangements can treat claims differently. What happens under one policy may not happen under another. 🔹 Your insurer’s overall claims experience – Even if you haven’t made a claim, insurers can increase premiums based on the overall cost of healthcare and claims across their customer base. 🔹 Your excess and policy options – The way your policy is structured can have a significant impact on both your premium and the amount you pay when you claim. 🔹 Changing insurers isn’t always simple – If you have developed medical conditions since taking out your policy, moving elsewhere could affect what is covered under a new policy. This is why I believe private medical insurance shouldn’t simply be about finding the cheapest premium today. It’s about understanding the policy, the underwriting, the potential future implications and how the cover fits not only your current circumstances but also planning for the years ahead. As a broker, I carry out a whole-of-market review for every client, I look at cost-containment options, negotiate discounts where possible and help you understand the implications of different policy structures. Importantly, my relationship with clients doesn’t stop once the policy is placed. I also provide practical support when you need to make a claim — because having someone to guide you through the process can be just as important as having the policy itself. If you’re reviewing your private medical insurance or simply want to understand how a claim could affect you in the future, feel free to get in touch. #PrivateMedicalInsurance #HealthInsurance #PMI #InsuranceBroker #Healthcare #PersonalFinance #EmployeeBenefits

Why are some medical conditions excluded from health insurance policies, while some insurers may offer coverage for them? It often comes down to risk assessment and policy design. Medical conditions can vary significantly in their expected treatment costs, frequency, and long-term impact. Therefore, insurers may apply different underwriting terms, exclusions, waiting periods, limits, or additional premiums depending on the plan and the assessed risk. This is why two medical insurance policies can have completely different approaches to the same condition. For clients, understanding what is covered, what is excluded, and under which terms is just as important as comparing the premium. #MedicalInsurance #Underwriting #PolicyManagement #HealthInsurance #EmployeeBenefits

Health insurance discussions often focus on broad policy debates, but consumers benefit most from understanding how coverage works. Private insurers use actuarial analysis and risk modeling to price plans, while government regulations establish consumer protections and coverage requirements. Together, these factors influence premiums, benefits, and plan availability. When comparing health insurance, focus on: • Monthly premium • Deductible • Out-of-pocket maximum • Provider network • Prescription drug coverage An informed comparison is far more valuable than relying on headlines or political messaging.
