COO @ GitHub | Operationalizing AI for every employee & enabling them to do their best work

Last Friday at HackGT, I witnessed one of GitHub’s earliest ethos in action: Dream it in the morning, build it in the afternoon. A notion that if you can envision it, you can make it real with code. That spirit shaped how we tinkered, iterated, and shipped new features, often faster than we’d ever imagined. Seeing 1,500+ students preparing to turn ideas into working prototypes in 36 hours was that vision realized. HackGT was a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and the down right courage to just start. The energy in the room, the community building, and the optimism for the future reminded me why this ethos matters today more than ever. With AI and open source, the barriers are falling. You don’t need permission or perfection – just the courage to start. And GitHub Copilot makes that journey easier for anyone, anywhere chasing a vision of their own. Thank you HackGT, Major League Hacking, and Georgia Institute of Technology for having me! To every student: you’re living proof of what happens when curiosity and vision meets code. Keep chasing the what ifs and why nots. We’re going to need a whole lot more of that spirit to build what’s next, together. ✨

  • Momentum for developers in Syria 🇸🇾 This week, a regional student programming competition in northern Syria brought together 25 teams from 9 universities, with Al-Shahbaa University taking first place—another signal of growing local developer energy. At the same time, GitHub is enabling broader access in Syria, following new government trade rules. Here’s what’s changing: Private & paid features restored (including GitHub Copilot) for developers across the country. Open source collaboration on public repos was always available; now more capabilities return for everyday building and learning. Rollout timing: changes are in progress and expected to reach accounts within about a week of the announcement. Read the update: gh.io/AAxupgi
