A cross-border payment settled in Euros and Danish Kroner at the exact same moment, with neither currency leg waiting on the other. It happened in a recent Eurosystem-led pilot on the European Central Bank's instant payment settlement platform, run alongside Danmarks Nationalbank and Sveriges Riksbank. The payment moved directly between the two settlement systems. It bypassed the usual sequence of correspondent banks confirming and passing it along one step at a time. Direct connections into payment infrastructure also change the cross-border communication problem fintechs run into most often: knowing what to tell a customer while a payment is still moving. A payment routed through fewer intermediaries is easier to track in real time, instead of going quiet somewhere between banks until it resurfaces on the other side. The same directness reaches FX costs, too. When both currency legs settle together, a quoted rate holds through completion, rather than drifting while a payment sits in a queue of correspondent banks. Pilots like this are how cross-border payments start settling with the same certainty domestic ones already have. Amazing energy at Nordic Fintech Week last week, where fintech and payment leaders came together to discuss what is shaping the future of the industry. A strong line-up of Mastercard speakers contributed to the discussions and brought perspectives on innovation, trust, and collaboration. Here are a few takeaways from the event: 🪙 The conversation on stablecoins is moving from “crypto” asset to “infrastructure.” Although improving, speed is still a friction point in cross-border payments. In some situations, long value chains, limited transparency, and dependency on traditional banking hours can slow down how fast money moves. Stablecoins have the potential to help address this with on-chain settlement, 24/7 availability, and less reliance on traditional banking hours. But mass adoption might come down to more than faster settlement. The winners will be those who can offer optionality at the front end, orchestrate across rails, assets, and currencies behind the scenes, and build trust in the asset and payment experience. 🤖 Agentic payments are no longer a concept but are becoming a reality. With the first AI-agent payment in Denmark between Mastercard and Danske Bank, and growing discussion around commercial payments, investing, and commerce, AI is becoming more than an assistant. The opportunity is significant, but adoption will depend on trust, control, and security. 🤝 Trust is the difference between a use case and a movement. Stablecoins can make settlement faster. AI agents can make commerce more autonomous. The next barrier is not capability, it is confidence. Trust in the asset, the provider, the experience, and the decision-making process will determine whether these innovations scale beyond early adopters. The real challenge is not just building new payment technology. It is making it feel safe, clear, and reliable enough to become part of everyday life. Sixty years ago, moving money internationally meant relying on paper-based processes and several intermediaries before anyone could confirm a payment had arrived. Michael's post, marking six decades of Mastercard, is really about the people who worked through every stage of that change, including the ones shaping cross-border payments right now. The shift from manual processing toward near real-time, connected payment infrastructure took people choosing, year after year, to keep building it forward. Congratulations to Mastercard on 60 years, and to everyone who has spent decades doing exactly that.
This year, Mastercard celebrates 60 years. There is a lot to be proud of wrapped up in that milestone, but at the top of my list is our people. One of those people is Joy Ewing, who recently celebrated a remarkable 50 years with Mastercard. 5 decades ago, much of the consumer payment experience was manual. She watched the industry move to mainframes, then digital commerce, and now into an era where AI, and digital assets are reshaping how people shop, pay, and move money. For all the technological transformation she’s seen Joy told me one thing has remained constant: her passion for the people at Mastercard. Technology will always evolve, and innovation will accelerate. But it's our people, their curiosity, expertise, and commitment to one another, that have powered Mastercard's first 60 years and will help shape the next. #WeAreMastercard https://lnkd.in/gqtPHYz4

Speed, trust, transparency. These are the most important factors for winning and retaining customer loyalty, when delivering fast, reliable and seamless payment experiences.
I'll admit it: stepping in front of the camera isn't something I do every day. But when the team shared an idea inspired by a simple number, 1.8 seconds, I knew I wanted to be part of it. That's the world-record pit stop time set by the McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team. It's also how long Mastercard took to complete an end-to-end cross-border payment. The comparison is memorable, but the implications for banks, fintechs and businesses are much bigger. Our latest research found that speed is now one of the top factors when choosing a cross-border payments provider. In fact, 67% of SMEs that recently switched providers said faster transactions and more reliable settlements were a key reason for making the change. But speed doesn't happen by accident. In Formula 1, performance on the track depends on countless people, systems and technologies working together behind the scenes. The same is true for money movement. Delivering fast, secure and transparent payments is a team sport, powered by innovation across networks, technology and partnerships. That's what made partnering with McLaren Racing such a natural fit. In both racing and payments, success comes from combining the right people, technology and teamwork to deliver results when every second counts. A huge thank you to McLaren Racing, Lando Norris, Dan Keyworth and the team behind this project for helping bring this story to life. And if you're attending Sibos in Miami next week, I'd welcome the opportunity to discuss what these findings mean for banks, fintechs and payment providers navigating the future of cross-border payments. Watch the film below and explore the full Money in Motion report via the link in the comments.

A must-read to understand the growing role of stablecoins in cross-border payments #MastercardMove #MoneyMovement #CrossBorderPayments #B2BPayments
Stablecoins are generating significant attention across the payments ecosystem, but their long-term potential comes down to one thing: helping move money faster, more efficiently and across more use cases. In the latest episode of Payment Expert’s Blockchain Bulletin: Unchained, Pratik Khowala, Global Head of Transfer Solutions at Mastercard, discusses the growing role of stablecoins in cross-border payments, real-world use cases emerging today, and why traditional financial institutions are increasingly investing in digital asset infrastructure.
