Nature-based solutions can help communities reduce vulnerability to climate-related hazards, support biodiversity and ecosystem function, improve water quality, and strengthen resilience. Yet despite growing interest and investment in their application, there have been many challenges to implementing and scaling these solutions. The National Academies’ Gulf Research Program (GRP) is an independent, science-based program founded in 2013 as part of legal settlements with the companies involved in the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster. The GRP’s mission is to develop, translate, and apply science to enhance the safety of offshore energy, the environment, and the wellbeing of the people of the Gulf region for generations to come. It supports innovative science, guides data design and monitoring, and builds and sustains networks to generate long-term benefits for the Gulf region and the nation.

SNORKELING FUN: The St. Petersburg Housing Authority (SPHA) organized a snorkeling field trip for youth living in SPHA communities. 🤿🌊 Held on July 27th, at the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center on the St. Pete Pier, the experience gave students the opportunity to explore Tampa Bay's marine ecosystem. 🐠 Hosted in partnership with Tampa Bay Watch, the field trip introduced students to real-world environmental challenges while inspiring curiosity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). 🔬⚙️🌎💡 The youth collected pipefish, baby shrimp, crabs, sand dollars, and seashells. 🦐🦀🐚 The field trip was part of SPHA's Gulf Futures 3D initiative, a grant-funded STEM program designed to build scientific and environmental literacy among youth in SPHA communities. 2021 Early-Career Research Fellow, Dr. Ranjana Mehta, and her team have developed a Digital Fatigue Risk Management system designed to detect fatigue in offshore rig workers before it leads to an incident. This system was designed in collaboration with offshore crews, supervisors, and managers and puts real mitigation decisions in the hands of those working in the offshore environment. Dr. Mehta and her team are now looking for offshore oil and gas partners to pilot their system in live operations and prove it out through a field study. ⚠️ Every year, #fatigue quietly drives some of the most serious incidents offshore. The industry has known this for decades. The tools to actually do something about it haven’t existed. So we built them. 💪 The NeuroErgonomics Lab at University of Wisconsin-Madison, in collaboration with Stephanie Payne and Farzan Sasangohar, PhD of Texas A&M University, are excited to present our work on #EMPOWER a Digital Fatigue Risk Management system built to detect fatigue before it becomes an incident and put real mitigation decisions in the hands of the people offshore. We didn’t build this in a lab and hope it worked. We built it inside one of the hardest-to-access work environments, something rarely, if ever, done at this depth for product development in this domain: 📊 Weeks of continuous daily data from crews actively working offshore across multiple operators, grounded in years of prior work with offshore companies 🎙️ Deep, sustained listening through hours of interviews with workers, supervisors, and managers, both one-on-one and in group consensus sessions ⌚ Machine learning and wearable-signal processing using real physiological data from the field, not the lab 🤝 UX and system design shaped hand-in-hand with the people who would actually use it, and revised again and again as their feedback came in Every feature earned its place by solving a problem someone on a rig actually told us about. 🛠️ What #EMPOWER does: 📱 Workers check in daily through a mobile app paired with a wearable ☁️ A cloud engine detects fatigue risk and delivers personalized mitigation guidance 🖥️ Supervisors see fatigue trends in real time, identify emerging risks, and act early The MVP is ready. New research from MissDelta is reshaping how scientists think about land loss along Louisiana's coast. 🌊 The study published in Marine Geology mapped the seafloor of Breton Sound and found that the sediment discharged by the Mississippi River isn't staying where it needs to.
