As part of Clear The Shelters, NBC4 and Telemundo 52 is partnering with local animal shelters to promote pet adoption and raise funds that support their animal welfare operations. Since its inception in 2015, NBC4 and Telemundo 52’s Clear The Shelters has helped more than 127,400 pets find new homes. Nationally, the initiative has helped more than 1.3 million pets find new homes and raised more than $5.6 million for participating shelters and rescues. 

Clear The Shelters fundraising will again be led by Greater Good Charities, a global nonprofit and longtime campaign partner. Donations to the general fund can be made now through Sept. 15, and donations to individual shelters can be made from Aug. 1 to 31 at ClearTheSheltersFund.org.

WeRescue is also returning for the eighth consecutive year as the exclusive technology partner of Clear The Shelters. The WeRescue website and apps let users browse adoptable pets in their area by breed, gender, size, and more, apply to adopt, and ask questions directly to shelters. New this year, Scout helps visitors find their best match with just a few quick questions.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition, a global leader in science-based pet nutrition and leading supporter of animal welfare, is returning as the campaign’s national sponsor for the ninth consecutive campaign. For the first time, Hill’s is serving as the presenting sponsor of Clear The Shelters this year.

Tune in to NBC4 daily throughout the campaign for special coverage and reports beginning with Today in LA from 4-7 a.m., followed by the newscasts at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m., 7 p.m., and 11 p.m. In addition, the station will feature content on the NBCLA app and on its streaming TV local news channel NBC Los Angeles News.

Based at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes in downtown Los Angeles, Casa México Los Ángeles 2026 will kick off its activities on June 11 with a live broadcast—shown on a giant screen—of the Mexican National Team’s opening match against South Africa, taking place in Mexico City. Subsequently, it will screen the matches on June 18 against South Korea and on June 24 against the Czech Republic. Depending on the Mexican National Team’s performance in the tournament, Casa México will announce additional screenings or other cultural activities.

“Casa México Los Ángeles 2026 will be a gathering space to proudly celebrate our roots, support the Mexican National Team, and share the cultural richness of our country with all communities in Southern California. We want every visitor to feel at home and experience a true celebration of unity,” shared the Consul General of Mexico in Los Angeles, Carlos González Gutiérrez.

In addition to screening the matches, Casa México will host two Family Days. The first of these community events will take place on Sunday, June 28, and the second on Saturday, July 11. The latter will feature performances by three youth mariachi bands. The Family Days—part of LA Plaza’s signature programming—will offer activities, workshops, and entertainment for all ages. Likewise, attendees will be able to enjoy music and the presence of various states of Mexico, showcasing their culture, cuisine, and tourism offerings.

“LA Plaza, an institution dedicated to sharing the diverse stories of Mexicans, Mexican Americans, and Latinos in Los Angeles, is honored to become Casa México during the World Cup,” said Tracy Serrano, LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes’ Interim CEO. “We are excited to offer a welcoming and inclusive space for all to gather and celebrate.”

As part of the Casa México Los Ángeles 2026 agenda, the live concert Summer of Salsa—featuring La Verdad, accompanied by Super DJ Robby—will also take place on Friday, July 10.

Attendees at Casa México will be able to visit, throughout the five weeks of the World Cup, the installation by renowned artist Betsabeé Romero, “Tejiendo Redes,” which features a sculptural goal woven with the participation of the community. This binational proposal integrates representations of pre-Hispanic ballgame players and contemporary soccer athletes.

Led by an esteemed lineup of grand marshals, the 2026 Long Beach Pride Parade will feature more than 100 participating organizations, businesses, and community stakeholders, showcasing vibrant floats and displays. The parade coincides with the Long Beach Pride Festival, taking place Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17 along the Downtown waterfront. This year’s theme, “Fearless and Free,” celebrates resilience, authenticity, and pride across the LGBTQ+ community

Hosted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness Greater Los Angeles County (NAMI GLAC), NAMIWalks brings together Angelenos whose lives or families have been impacted by mental health conditions. The walk helps raise awareness, reduce stigma, and raise funds to support mental health resources for all.

Festival attendees will enjoy a variety of wellness and family-friendly activities throughout the day, including yoga and meditation sessions, interactive games, and sign‑making. Children will be able to take home NAMI’s Little Monster coloring and activity books, available in English, Spanish, and Mandarin. Participants are also encouraged to bring their friendly leashed dogs dressed in their best looks for the fun and festive Doggie Costume Competition.

The grant categories are youth education and empowerment, next generation storytellers, and community engagement. The grant winners will be announced later this year.

Key grant eligibility requirements: 

• 501(c)(3) nonprofit’s headquarters and/or the program for which the organization is applying must be located in a participating market;
• Entity must service the market they operate from;
• Organization’s total expenses must be between $100,000 and $1,000,000
• The applying organization’s revenue must be greater than $100,000; and
• Nonprofit must help to resolve everyday community issues in any of the three grant categories.

NBCUniversal Local Impact Grant categories include:

1. Youth Education & Empowerment: In-school and community-based programs that equip youth with the tools they need to succeed, including STEM/STEAM education and youth entrepreneurship.
2. Next Generation Storytellers: Programs that develop pathways for emerging talent and youth voices to explore careers in communications, arts, news, sports and entertainment
3. Community Engagement: Programs that help foster community unity by enabling individuals to engage with and volunteer in their regions.

The 2026 NBCU Local Impact Grants will deliver a total of $2.5 million in unrestricted funds across the 11 U.S. markets served by NBC- and Telemundo-owned stations. Founded in 2018, NBCUniversal’s grant program has provided $21 million to 615 organizations, including the 69 nonprofits awarded $2.5 million last year.

The Vamos World Cup Initiative, part of Telemundo’s Tu Momento. Tu Jugada., is providing a total of $600,000 in funding to nonprofits that use soccer to create opportunity, build leadership and move communities forward. Recipients include two local nonprofits located in each of the eight FIFA World Cup 2026™ host cities served by Telemundo-owned stations, along with national organization Soccer Without Borders.

Soccer Forward, U.S. Soccer’s legacy platform and the driving force behind its efforts to expand access and strengthen communities through the game, is facilitating the grants through Comcast NBCUniversal funding. Telemundo 52 will partner with the local nonprofits to spotlight the grant recipients and amplify their impact through media coverage and community engagement events leading up to and during FIFA World Cup 2026™.

“Our Vamos World Cup initiative reflects our belief that soccer has the power to open doors, build confidence and strengthen communities,” said Todd Mokhtari, Telemundo 52 & NBC4 President & General Manager.  “This partnership with the Soccer Forward Foundation ensures that the excitement of the FIFA World Cup 2026 translates into lasting impact for our Los Angeles communities and inspire the next generation of leaders.”

• Football for Her: Football For Her is a Los Angeles–based nonprofit providing free access to the sport of soccer through free play initiatives, match experiences, equipment distributions, and community programming that use the game to build confidence, connection, and opportunity.

• Home Field Advantage: Home Field Advantage builds healthier, more connected communities by mentoring local leaders to coach sports in underused neighborhood spaces, fostering an inclusive and sustainable sports ecosystem that creates opportunities for play and leadership.

With elections on voters’ minds, NBC Los Angeles and Telemundo 52, along with the Los Angeles LGBT Center and Equality California, presented Centering Equality: California’s LGBTQ+ Gubernatorial Forum.

Seven candidates running for governor participated in the nonpartisan conversation to discuss topics that affect the LGBTQ+ community. Talking points included civil rights, public safety, education, health care and housing.

NBC Los Angeles and Telemundo 52 exclusively livestreamed the discussion on Monday, March 2 at 7 p.m.

On this day, the American Heart Association raises awareness about cardiovascular disease and works with communities to change the future of women’s heart health.

The Association reminds women—and everyone—to learn their family health history to better understand their risk, recognize the warning signs of heart attack and stroke, and take steps to improve their overall health.

Often, the first responders in a cardiac emergency are everyday bystanders. Because of this, the American Heart Association encourages people to learn Hands-Only CPR—CPR without breaths—since too many women do not receive help when experiencing cardiac arrest. Plus, family-friendly and community-centered events like salsa nights, film screenings, and a community festival with more to be announced.

As more than half of California reported skipping or delaying medical care because of cost in 2023, Chi-Lum said a number of factors, including language and transportation, can also affect people’s decision to seek care. 

Sac Health is one of about 300 groups that will get the chance to address health concerns during the event as the candidates will hear from the community and propose their solutions. 

Several candidates, including former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa have already confirmed their participation for the Nov. 7 live event that NBC4 and Telemundo 52 will be airing on our websites, mobile apps, YouTube Channels and streaming channels.

The upcoming race has already a crowded field of candidates. After former Vice President Kamala Harris’ decided to bypass the 2026 contest, at least 10 people declared their candidacy.

The primary election is set for June 2, 2026, and the general election will be held on Nov. 3, 2026.

NBC4, Telemundo 52, and Comcast NBCUniversal announced $227,272 has been awarded to five local nonprofit organizations through the 2025 NBCUniversal Local Impact Grants. Since 2018, NBC4 and Telemundo 52 have now provided more than $1.7 million to 47 nonprofits through the annual grant program.

For the eighth year, the competitive grant challenge is awarding unrestricted funding to eligible nonprofits making a difference in Southern California.  Applications were accepted in three categories: youth education and empowerment, next generation storytellers, and community engagement. The 2025 application window for 501(c)(3) nonprofits was March 11 through April 11.

“We are proud to support these five outstanding organizations that are making a meaningful impact across Southern California,” said Todd Mokhtari, President and General Manager of NBC4 and Telemundo 52. “Through the Local Impact Grants, we’re investing in the next generation of leaders, storytellers, and changemakers. These nonprofits are helping build stronger, more connected communities — and we’re honored to help amplify their work.”

The 2025 NBCUniversal Local Impact Grants are providing $2.5 million in funds to nonprofits serving one of NBC- and Telemundo-owned stations’ 11 U.S. markets, which are New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Boston, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Miami, San Diego and Hartford, Conn. Founded in 2018, NBCUniversal’s grant program has now provided $21 million to 615 nonprofits.

NBCUniversal Local Impact Grants recipients in the Southern California area are: 

Southeast Community Development Corporation – $75,000

Southeast Community Development Corporation provides civic storytelling and journalism training to youth, empowering them to address local issues and advocate for community change. Their programming fosters critical thinking, communication skills, and civic engagement.

TIYYA Foundation – $50,000

TIYYA Foundation creates community engagement and support for families through inclusive programs like Tea & Tots. Their work fosters cross-cultural relationships, early childhood development, and volunteer engagement.

Black Thumb Farm – $50,000

Black Thumb Farm offers sustainable farming education, mentorship, and leadership development to all youth across the greater L.A. area. Their programs promote food sovereignty, environmental stewardship, and personal empowerment.

Reading To Kids – $26,136

Reading to Kids hosts monthly reading clubs at elementary schools in Los Angeles, fostering literacy and communication skills through interactive reading sessions. They donate books to children, parents, and schools to encourage home libraries and continuous engagement.

ArtsUp! LA – $26,136

ArtsUP! LA empowers youth through the Creative Youth Theatre program, teaching storytelling, playwriting, and theatre production. The program fosters creativity, collaboration, and essential life skills, promoting self-expression and social awareness.

This annual tradition includes Los Angeles leaders joining the Consul General of Mexico to recreate the historic Cry of Dolores and ring the bell, commemorating Miguel Hidalgo’s 1810 call to arms that began the Mexican War of Independence.

This partnership helps support the organizations efforts to strengthen the region’s most underserved and under-resourced urban neighborhoods by addressing pressing academic and community needs.  The backpacks and supplies will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last.

For over 20 years, NAMIWalks has been leading the mental health conversations and community building in Los Angeles. This year’s popular NAMIWalks connects Angelenos whose lives or families have been affected by mental illness. The Walk raises awareness, fights stigma, and raises funds.

Festival attendees can participate in workshops including an all-day schedule of mindfulness, meditation and Sound Baths giving everyone the chance to learn and practice positive coping skills. For children, take home NAMI’s Little Monster coloring & activity books in English, Spanish, and Mandarin. Learn about horticultural therapy and more at resource booths which will also provide information and giveaways. Picnics in the park are encouraged.

This highly anticipated annual event provides individuals and families with the opportunity to explore a diverse range of resources and services for the special needs community, including support for those with autism spectrum disorder, learning disabilities, ADHD, developmental delays, and emotional challenges.

Over the past decade, the Special Needs Resource Fair has become a vital hub for families seeking guidance, support, and connection. This year’s event is expected to welcome over 1,000 attendees and showcase 75 exhibitors offering invaluable services, including educational programs, medical and therapeutic support, advocacy resources, financial planning assistance, and vocational training opportunities.

Eligible 501(c)(3) nonprofits can access more information and apply for NBCUniversal Local Impact Grants at localimpactgrants.com and the Spanish-language site becasdeimpactolocal.com today, Tuesday, March 11, through April 11. The grant categories are youth education and empowerment, next generation storytellers, and community engagement. The grant winners will be announced later this year.

Key grant eligibility requirements:  

·         501(c)(3) nonprofit’s headquarters and/or the program for which the organization is applying must be located in a participating market;  

·         Entity must service the market they operate from;  

·         Organization’s total expenses must be between $100,000 and $1,000,000; and  

·         Nonprofit must help to resolve everyday community issues in any of the three grant categories.  

NBCUniversal Local Impact Grant categories include: 

1.      Youth Education & Empowerment: In-school and community-based programs that equip youth with the tools they need to succeed, including STEM/ STEAM education and youth entrepreneurship. 

2.      Next Generation Storytellers: Programs that develop pathways for emerging talent and youth voices to explore careers in communications, arts, news, sports and entertainment  

3.      Community Engagement: Programs that help foster community unity by enabling individuals to engage with and volunteer in their regions.  

The 2025 NBCU Local Impact Grants will deliver a total of $2.5 million in unrestricted funds across the 11 U.S. markets served by NBC- and Telemundo-owned stations. Founded in 2018, NBCUniversal’s grant program has provided $18.5 million to 546 organizations, including the 76 nonprofits awarded $2.5 million last year.  Locally, NBC4 and Telemundo 52 have granted more than $1.5 million to 42 nonprofits in Southern California through the grant program. 

The NBC- and Telemundo-owned stations’ markets are New York (WNBC, WNJU), Los Angeles (KNBC, KVEA), Chicago (WMAQ, WSNS), Philadelphia (WCAU, WWSI), Dallas-Fort Worth (KXAS, KXTX), Washington, D.C. (WRC-TV, WZDC), Boston (WBTS, WNEU), San Francisco  (KNTV, KSTS), Miami (WTVJ, WSCV), San Diego (KNSD, KUAN) and Hartford, Conn. (WVIT, WRDM).
