Campbell, 70, was charged with simple domestic battery and tampering or harassing a witness or victim, which is a felony, Broward Jail records showed.

While details of his arrest remain limited, Campbell was taken into custody on Inverrary Boulevard and Environ Boulevard.

NBC6 asked Lauderhill Mayor Denise D. Grant for comments on his arrest, and while she refused to comment, she spoke during a commission meeting on Monday.

“We ask for your protection, God, and that you protect him in this time, and give him what he needs for peace as we call upon you to help our colleague, Vice Mayor Richard Campbell,” she said.

According to booking information, Campbell remains at the Broward County Jail.

Campbell was last elected back in 2024 and is currently on the ballot running for City Commission Seat 4.

Saturday’s flash flood severely damaged the only water pipeline into the canyon. Officials barred tourists from staying at lodges and hotels inside Grand Canyon National Park and issued emergency water restrictions for year-round residents. Waves of torrential rain had hit the Bright Angel Creek area of the tourist destination that hosts 4.4 million visitors a year.

Grand Canyon Deputy Superintendent Brian Drapeaux said officials anticipate “miles of the pipeline being destroyed,” but a full accounting of the devastation won’t be completed until Tuesday at the earliest.

Incident Cmdr. Dave Black said searchers used night vision and other equipment to find people who needed rescuing during the deluge. By sunset on Saturday, 45 people were rescued, and 37 more were evacuated on Sunday.

Rangers referred to the park’s permit system and checked vehicle license plates to track the number of missing people.

“As of right now, they have no reason to believe, from the tips we’ve been through so far, that there’s anybody besides the one” missing person, Black said during a news conference Monday evening.

The flood threatened people who hike far into the Grand Canyon

The flood happened deep in the canyon near where the Colorado River flows, around popular lodges and camping areas where people hiking from one rim of the Grand Canyon to the other stop for the night.

Scores of visitors had to be evacuated from the area by helicopter. They talked of a massive deluge and rangers warning of rockslides, and saw huge pools of logs and debris rolling down the river as they stood nearby awaiting rescue.

Hiker Daniel Evans said it rained several times before the worst 30-minute downpour Saturday afternoon. He had been planning to rest through the hot day and spend the night near the hard-hit Bright Angel campground area.

Earlier, rangers told him it looked to be safe. Then, as the rain poured, they told him it was time to go. He thought of Nepal and the massive floods and landslides that poured down mountain valleys last week.

“The entire time it was raining — the entire time I’m going through all this and packing — I’m just keeping my eyes upstream, just praying that a wall of water isn’t coming toward us,” Evans said.

One hiker killed is identified as rescuers search for his friends

The family of John Giusti, 53, said the Texas chiropractor set out Thursday on a trip he dreamed of with two buddies — Texas martial arts studio owner Brent Rosenkranz, 42, and Wyoming pilot Timothy Smith, 53. They planned to spend two nights at the bottom of the canyon fishing and hiking.

They spoke to their families Thursday and found their campsite Friday. They have not been heard from since, the three families said in a joint statement released Monday.

All three men had ties to Granbury, Texas. Their families said they planned “several days of hiking, camping, fishing and exploring together.”

Park officials said they recovered the body of a 46-year-old man Sunday evening near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River and were trying to recover a second body. Their email provided no other details.

Late Monday morning, more rain fell as the state Department of Emergency and Military Affairs was coordinating with the park service and county emergency management officials in search and recovery efforts.

It’s ‘monsoon season’ in the Grand Canyon

Visiting the Grand Canyon can be particularly dangerous in the summer because of the risk of flash flooding that accompanies the monsoon, or rainy season. Clear days can quickly give way to thunderstorms and downpours. Forecasters warned more flooding could happen Monday or just about any time storms pop up.

Rain also fell on part of the Dragon Bravo fire scar, a burn area left by a lightning-caused wildfire in July 2025. It burned for days before exploding into a fast-moving conflagration that forced evacuations and consumed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge, some cabins and other structures.

Without vegetation, a barren burn scar allows runoff to flow more quickly.

The steep, rocky nature of the canyon itself funnels water rapidly. What might be a normal summer downpour somewhere else can become a charging wall of water in the canyon.

El Nino has made this year’s monsoons in the desert especially intense

This year’s heavy monsoon rains are especially intense because there is a higher amount of water vapor in the atmosphere, mostly because of a strong El Nino, said A. Park Williams, a hydroclimatologist at the University of California, Los Angeles.

The natural warming of parts of the Pacific Ocean can warp weather globally. That extra water vapor in the southwest U.S. gets wrung out in the storm in the form of rainfall, he said.

The link to human-caused climate change and the heavy Arizona rain is pretty strong, said climate scientist Daniel Swain of the California Institute for Water Resources.

A few months ago, Swain and colleagues published a study in the journal Weather and Climate Extremes finding that during the summer, short-term intense downpours in the West — akin to the one that hit the Grand Canyon — have become 10% stronger since 2000.

The flood hits water supply in the canyon

The flood was a major blow to an enduring effort to modernize the water pipeline that serves visitors and the roughly 1,600 residents of Grand Canyon Village.

A $208 million rehabilitation of the pipeline and upgrades to the associated water delivery system started in 2023, with the park service calling it a crucial investment to ensure the park can meet the needs of residents and visitors. The project was expected to be completed next year.

While the Grand Canyon has large storage tanks for potable water on the South Rim, they won’t be refilled while the pipeline is out of service.

According to FDOT, local law enforcement agencies will have 30 days to remove the flock cameras that are currently operational.

If those cameras are not removed within 30 days, FDOT will remove them.

FDOT has also revoked all LPR-related approvals.

In the memorandum, FDOT said that reports of misuse and data concerns merited “immediate action to preserve Floridians’ sovereignty and quality of life.”

“Well, I’ve been on the record as saying that what we don’t want in the state of Florida is to have a digital AI surveillance state where everything we’re doing is being tracked at all times,” DeSantis said on Monday. “And do I think that LPRs can be useful. The state uses it for like toll by plate, but that’s a different situation than when you’re using it for criminal penalties.”

Following FDOT’s announcement, law enforcement in Volusia County, Clay County and Duval County have said they will comply with the memo, but also stated that the LPRs have helped them solve crimes.

Police said the cameras help solve crimes, like catching an alleged armed robbery suspect in Miami Gardens, but even DeSantis said the cameras go too far.

“I guarantee every sheriff in Florida can point to examples where it’s been used appropriately and probably effectively, but you also have to say, ‘How can this be misused?'” DeSantis said.

NBC6 spoke with Pembroke Pines Vice Mayor Mike Hernandez, who said he needs more guidance on the order, but said that, for now, the cameras within the city will stay up, but not on Pines Boulevard, since it’s a state road.

“Wherever they are in the rest of the city for now, they are staying up as long as it’s a city road,” Hernandez said.

Residents, along with groups like the ACLU, have spoken out against the cameras.

The ACLU started this petition called “Get the flock out,” demanding the removal of the cameras from neighborhoods.

Operation Statewide Shield took place from Aug. 17 to 21 in efforts that “focused on identifying, locating, and recovering missing children under the age of 18,” according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).

“The children ranged in age from 2 months to 17 years old, and many had experienced various levels of abuse, neglect, exploitation, or exposure to other criminal activity,” authorities said in a news release.

The vulnerable youth that were rescued included:

• 46 in the Tampa Bay region
• 41 in Miami
• 32 in Jacksonville
• 21 in Orlando
• 12 in Fort Myers
• 8 in Pensacola
• 3 in the Tallahassee region

The operation also led to an unknown number of other children being found in six states, one U.S. territory and 12 countries, FDLE said.

“Recovered children needing assistance were safely transported by local law enforcement to designated recovery hubs, where they received support from social services, child welfare professionals, medical providers, victim advocates, and other child-centered resources,” officials said.

According to FDLE, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier’s Office of Statewide Prosecution and the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office are taking on three felony cases as a result of the operation.

The new release did not provide information about possible arrests.

“Many of these kids have been victimized by those who prey on the most vulnerable,” Uthmeier is quoted in the news release. “Thanks to the outstanding work of FDLE, the Office of Statewide Prosecution, and our state and local partners, these children are now safe and receiving the care they deserve. Florida will continue leading the recovery of missing children, hunting down every predator, and prosecuting abusers to the fullest extent of the law.”

Jurors have found Duane “Keffe D” Davis, 63, guilty of first-degree murder for orchestrating the death of rap legend Tupac Shakur.

The verdict was reached Monday after the roughly two-week trial came to a close three decades after the music icon’s drive-by shooting death in Las Vegas. The decision was read after only hours of deliberations.

The decision comes after weeks of testimony that largely focused on past interviews and other comments about the killing from Davis, a former gang member who is the only person to ever face criminal charges in the 1996 shooting.

Who was there the night Tupac Shakur was killed in Las Vegas?

Jurors began deliberations Monday afternoon to consider the case against Davis, who faces one count of murder with a deadly weapon with gang enhancements. The panel of 10 women and six men heard from two dozen witnesses for the prosecution and three for the defense.

During the delivery of jury instructions Monday, the judge noted that Davis was accused in an indictment alleging an open charge of murder. The charge could have included first- or second-degree murder, a decision that was left to the jury.

Now convicted, Davis faces up to life in prison.

Davis isn’t accused of firing the gunshots that killed Shakur at age 25, but prosecutors have portrayed him as a shot-caller who orchestrated the attack as retribution for a casino lobby brawl earlier on the night of Sept. 7, 1996, that involved Shakur, his entourage and Davis’ nephew.

Much of the prosecution’s case focused on the defendant’s own words about the Las Vegas shooting that stunned the hip-hop world. The case remained unsolved for decades before Davis’ public interviews and 2019 memoir helped revive scrutiny of the killing.

“Under California and Nevada law, if you are the shot-caller, if you hand the gun to somebody, even if you didn’t pull the trigger, it’s all the same,” said NBC4 legal analyst Royal Oakes.

Prosecutors revisited those recordings during closing arguments, claiming the case is “drenched in circumstantial evidence.” Chief Deputy District Attorney Binu Palal told jurors that Davis acquired a gun and “went hunting” for Shakur and Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight.

Palal acknowledged Davis’ account changed over the years, but insisted a key element remained the same — Davis placing himself in the Cadillac.

Palal also told jurors the drive-by shooting was planned, suggesting premeditation warranting a conviction on a first-degree murder charge. He pointed to testimony and Davis’ accounts that the group initially searched for Shakur before later spotting him on the road and making a U-turn near the Strip.

“It’s a plan, not an impulse,” Palal said.

Prosecutors also played short clips of Davis’ YouTube interviews, during which he implored viewers to buy his book for what he referred to as “the real truth.” In one clip, Davis shared harsh words about Shakur and the attack at the MGM Grand.

Shakur, who was in Las Vegas for a heavyweight fight between Mike Tyson and Bruce Seldon at the MGM Grand, was riding in a BMW when a white Cadillac pulled up next to it at a red light near the Las Vegas Strip and gunfire erupted. Shakur was shot multiple times and died six days later. The driver of the BMW, Knight, survived.

In a 2008 police interview played for jurors, Davis said he provided the gun and his nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, opened fire. The other men in the Cadillac have since died, limiting eyewitness testimony.

“Let’s be clear, Duane Davis did not pull the trigger. But he did plan the shooting in retaliation of the beating of his nephew,” Palal told jurors during opening statements. “Remarkably, you will learn that from Duane Davis himself.

“Now, 30 years later, we’re going to ask you to finally hold Duane Davis accountable.” 

Davis’ attorneys have disputed the statements and fought unsuccessfully to get them excluded. Attorney Michael Sanft told jurors his client’s words did not represent the truth.

During the defense’s closing argument, attorney Michael Sanft described his client’s words as braggadocio meant to make money, not the truth. He pointed to a lack of physical evidence placing Davis in the Cadillac with the shooter.

Davis wasn’t previously charged because law enforcement knew that he was “full of crap,” Sanft said earlier in the trial.

But prosecutors attempted to portray Davis as an influential gang member. Among the final prosecution witnesses to testify was a former Compton gang detective who characterized Davis as a high-ranking “shot caller.”

Davis’ ultimate authority meant younger gang members would not have opened fire on Shakur with Davis present unless he allowed it, said Robert Ladd, a former Compton police officer who investigated gang homicides in the southern Los Angeles County community.

Davis did not testify.

“Very smart move for him not to testify because in this situation the prosecution was unable to come up with any corroborating evidence of his guilt,” Oakes said. “They can’t really establish, really, that he was in Las Vegas, much less that he was in that car.

“Now, he confessed all that in his memoir, to the police in 08 and 09, podcast interviews, but is that going to be enough,” Oakes said. “Critically, there were inconsistencies in the stories he told that allowed the defense to argue he was just makin it up, he wanted street cred.”

The shooting marked a flashpoint in a dispute with roots in the long-running feud between the Mob Piru Bloods, a gang Knight and Shakur were affiliated with, and the South Side Compton Crips, for whom Davis was a prominent leader. Ladd testified that Shakur’s shooting triggered a 10-day war in Compton between the South Side Crips and Mob Piru, resulting in three killings and 10 attempted murders.

Other witnesses called by the prosecution included former law enforcement officers, including the first to respond to the scene of the shooting; the man who snapped what is believed to be the last photo of Shakur before the shooting; and a former Mob Piru member who helped Knight with security.

Shakur remains a cultural icon and is considered one of the most influential and versatile rappers of all time. He was nominated for six Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.

After his death, Shakur and his influence lived on. He received a posthumous star in 2023 on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a street named after him in Oakland, and will be a character in the upcoming video adventure game “Stranger than Heaven.”

The crash happened at around 8:30 a.m. Saturday at 3501 Rickenbacker Causeway.

Police said they responded to a traffic crash involving both a vehicle and a cyclist.

The cyclist was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Family members on Monday identified him as Dr. Gilbert Beauperthuy-Rojas, an orthopedic surgeon with HCA Florida Mercy Hospital.

The family said he was in critical condition. His brother-in-law said he has cuts to his kidney and liver and if he survives, he’ll be paralyzed from the waist-down.

Beauperthuy-Rojas, along with his brother-in-law and a friend, have been riding their bikes along the Rickenbacker every Saturday morning for the past 16 years, family said, but the morning of the crash the doctor was riding alone.

“Dr. Beauperthuy-Rojas is a deeply valued member of the HCA Florida Mercy Hospital family and our hearts are with him and his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” Allyssa Tobitt, CEO of HCA Florida Mercy Hospital, said in a statement. “As a Catholic healthcare ministry, we believe deeply in the power of prayer, hope and the strength of a community united in compassion. We ask our colleagues, patients and community to join us in praying for him, his family and all those affected by this tragedy.”

The driver remained on the scene and is cooperating with police, authorities said, and the circumstances surrounding what led up to the crash remain under investigation.

According to Miami Fire Rescue, crews responded at around 12:27 p.m. to the area near the school after receiving reports of an altercation.

Crews then found an 18-year-old boy who had a stab wound, and he was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in stable condition.

A 15-year-old boy was also taken to the hospital with a laceration to his hand.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools said it is aware of the incident and that the matter was addressed by Miami-Dade Schools Police.

Cellphone video shows two people appearing to team up as they attack a student in a hallway before that student appears to go after them.

The video doesn’t make it clear who the suspects and the victims are in the incident.

M-DCPS said that as a result of the incident, there were criminal charges.

It’s unclear if one of the students was arrested or what charges they are facing.

In the courtroom, prosecutors played a jail phone call where they said Romuliss Hicks admitted to firing on the officer back in 2024.

Hicks, 34, is on trial for shooting Sunrise Police Det. Robert Padron.

According to police, officers were trying to arrest Hicks on a warrant in January of 2024 when video showed Hicks firing at Padron twice, striking him once.

During the trial, Hicks hasn’t been in the courtroom, but prosecutors said the recorded jail phone call with a friend proved that he admitted to the shooting.

“I ain’t tripping, I know what I did,” Hicks said in the call. “I chose to pull that trigger, you know what I’m saying? It is what it is, dog.”

Detective Padron, who had been shot in the leg, testified during the trial.

Hicks was also shot once and recovered.

During closing arguments, the defense insisted Hicks had no ill-will toward Padron, and therefore Hicks didn’t commit attempted second-degree-murder.

They pleaded with the jurors to consider a lesser charge of attempted manslaughter.

Hicks is charged with second-degree murder.

He’s already serving a 50-year prison sentence in a separate case that was tried earlier this year when she shot his girlfriend.

The case has been handed to the jury.

The two men had been involved in an argument at the bus stop before one pulled out a knife and slashed the other’s arm, Fort Lauderdale Police officials said.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said crews responded and transported the victim to a local hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Officers were at the scene and had a portion of the bus stop closed off by yellow crime scene tape. A large amount of blood could be seen on the ground nearby.

The suspect fled the scene, police said. The incident remains under investigation.

Marc Horowitz, 53, was arrested Sunday on charges of robbery by sudden snatching and domestic violence battery, Broward jail records showed.

Horowitz, an assistant principal at Orange Brook Elementary School in Hollywood, was reassigned following his arrest, Broward County Public Schools officials said.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, deputies had responded to a disturbance call in the 16000 block of Southwest 5th Way in Weston around 11:58 p.m. on Friday.

Deputies learned Horowitz had been involved in a domestic disturbance where he physically assaulted the victim and snatched their phone, officials said.

During his Monday morning bond court appearance, it was learned the alleged victim is the mother of his two children.

The judge set Horowitz’s bond at $3,000 and ordered him to have no contact with the alleged victim, although he’s allowed to communicate through a third party for coordinating child care, custody, and support.

Horowitz’s reassignment is “pending further Human Resources review and action, which may include termination,” a district spokesman said.

In 2021, Horowitz was nominated for Broward Teacher of the Year while working as an instructional coach at Flamingo Elementary School in Davie.

At Orange Brook Elementary, news of his arrest caught some parents and grandparents by surprise as they dropped off students Monday morning.

“It’s not really good for the school, it’s not, for my family, for my son, it’s not,” mother Brenda Rodriguez said.

“And to hear something like that, it’s kinda frightening, you know, we’re trusting our children to people like that,” said Jacquelyn Peterson, whose granddaughter attends the school.

Broward Teacher’s Union President Anna Fusco said she used to work with Horowitz at Orange Brook.

“Everybody wants answers of exactly what happened, so I think that’s the biggest question right now. What exactly happened that led to this assistant principal that is responsible for working with children arrested for battery domestic violence and theft,” Fusco said.

Ahraya Crespin, 36, is facing charges including sexual battery, strongarm robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, assault and resisting an officer without violence, Miami-Dade jail records showed.

The alleged sexual battery happened March 27 near the 6800 block of the beach when a woman said a man jumped on her, struck her, removed her clothing and sexually battered her, an arrest report said.

The woman said after the battery he forcibly took her phone from her and told her “If I had a gun, I would shoot you,” the report said.

The victim went to a rape treatment center and on Aug. 26, DNA found on victim matched Crespin, the report said.

By then, Crespin was already behind bars after his arrest the previous day, Aug. 25, in the aggravated assault, records show.

In that incident, officers had responded to the 6900 block of Collins Avenue for reports of a man with knife who was screaming at people and hitting storefront windows, an arrest report said.

A man and two women told officers they were sitting in a restaurant when man “forcefully began striking the storefront window with a knife-corkscrew in hand,” the report said.

They said he was looking at them and started yelling that he was going to kill them, then yelled at one of the women that he was going to rape her, the report said.

The woman said she saw the man, Crespin, approach another man and try to strike him with the knife but the man blocked the attack and fled, the report said.

Crespin then approached a woman who had arrived for work and was locking up her bicycle in a bike rack when he kicked several other bikes in the rack, the report said.

When she looked at him, he yelled at her “you have a problem” and started to approach her, the report said.

“She stated that he then cornered her against the wall as he held both his arms on either side of her with his hands against the wall, preventing her from leaving,” the report said. “She stated that he then said to her ‘I kill you.'”

Crespin fled but was taken into custody. Police found a knife with a corkscrew attached in his shorts pocket, the report said.

The report said Crespin has an extensive criminal history including violent crimes, as well as a 2022 conviction for battery.

On April 2, a week after the sexual battery, Crespin had been arrested for trespassing for allegedly causing disturbances inside the parking garage of the Publix at 6876 Collins Avenue, records showed.

An officer had to use their stun gun on him after he took a “fighting stance” during the incident, an arrest report said.

During Crespin’s appearance before a judge on Monday, a prosecutor asked for an elevated bond based on the allegations and criminal history.

“This is such a violent rape, I think it does deserve an increased bond,” Judge Mindy Glazer said. “A rape of a woman who’s on the beach and goes for a stroll at 1:30 in the morning.”

Glazer set Crespin’s bond at $100,000 on the sexual battery charge.

The 39-year-old shared the news on Monday, more than a month after he made his final appearance for his country in the World Cup final.

“After the time that has passed since the final, and after giving it a lot of thought, I want to let everyone know that I am retiring from the Argentina national team…” Messi said in an Instagram post.

“It was a decision that hurt — and still hurts deep down — but I understand that the time has come.

“I swear to you that I always gave it my all — not just in these last few years when we won everything, but before that too; I always fought and left everything on the field for this jersey, to bring you joy and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football.”

Messi shared in a footnote that “*I wrote these words on July 21st, two days after the final. Today, after what happened with my dad, I am even more convinced than before.”

Messi’s father, Jorge Messi, died earlier this month at a hospital in the central Argentina city of Rosario. He was 68.

Messi is Argentina’s all-time leading goalscorer and most capped player, scoring 125 goals across 207 matches with the senior national team. He led the country to its third ever World Cup title in 2022, which culminated with a thrilling shootout victory over France in Qatar.

Messi had previously announced his retirement from international play in 2016 following three straight defeats in finals between Copa América (2012 and 2016) and the World Cup (2014). He reversed course shortly after and led Argentina to Copa América triumphs in 2021 and 2024.

This year’s World Cup was the sixth of Messi’s storied career. Messi and Argentina pulled off several miraculous comebacks en route to the 2026 final against Spain, but they ultimately lost 1-0 in extra time.

“There’s not much time left and chapters are coming to a close; this is one that hurts me deeply. Jesus Montes De Oca was arrested Friday night on charges of attempted murder and attempted solicitation and conspiracy, an arrest report said.

The report said investigators responded and found the victim, who suffered second-degree burns to the back of his head and around his neck, his upper back and right arm and hand.

While speaking with an officer, Montes De Oca “spontaneously stated that he had lit the victim on fire after the victim had applied rubbing alcohol to himself,” the report said.

Montes De Oca said he tried to assist the victim by wiping the fire and extinguishing the flames but said the victim wouldn’t let him, the report said.

The victim taken to Memorial Regional Hospital and later transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospitals’ Ryder Trauma Center for treatment.

At the hospital, the victim told a detective Montes De Oca threw an unknown accelerant on him before he was set on fire.

Montes De Oca was booked into jail, where he remained held without bond, records showed. Attorney information wasn’t available.

Flights, hotels, car rentals, or even a cruise can quickly add up to thousands of dollars. But what if a medical emergency, natural disaster, or mega travel delays disrupt your trip? That’s where travel insurance might come in handy.

Consumer Reports took a closer look at what those policies cover, what they don’t, and whether they’re worth your money.

Mandy Trahan and her family were vacationing in Puerto Vallarta. She said their trip to Mexico took an unexpected turn when cartel violence broke out, forcing the city into lockdown and shutting down the airport.

“There was kind of a mad rush to try to find your way home, try to find accommodation,” she said.

Trahan had travel protection through her credit card. But when she looked closely at the terms, she wasn’t sure it would cover an extended stay. Consumer Reports says credit card coverage is a good start, but it’s often limited.

A separate travel insurance policy may cover things like refunds if you prepaid for a vacation but can’t take the trip due to illness. It could also cover extra hotel nights, meals, or the cost of rebooking a flight if your trip is disrupted.

Consumer Reports says sites like InsureMyTrip and Squaremouth make it easier to compare plans. And once you find a policy, don’t assume that you’re covered for everything.

Lisa Gill, an investigative reporter with Consumer Reports, advises: “Make sure you know what the policy will and won’t pay for.”

A medical emergency is also worth thinking about. Most health insurance plans, including Medicare, offer limited or no coverage abroad. Consider a plan that covers medical evacuation, especially if you’re going somewhere outside the U.S. with limited access to major hospitals, such as on a cruise.

And if you have a preexisting condition, check that it’s covered. When comparing plans, choose one that provides “primary coverage,” so you don’t have to file a claim with your own health insurance first.

Finally, check that the travel insurance company has strong ratings from the Better Business Bureau and A.M. Best.

For Trahan, the takeaway is to have a better backup plan when things don’t go as expected.

“Travel insurance is definitely a nice security to have and gives you peace,” she said.

Consumer Reports says if you have a licensed travel or booking agent, they can help you understand exactly what your policy covers, so you’re not left guessing when you actually need it.

Shawn Samuels, 28, was arrested Sunday on two counts of child neglect with no great bodily harm, an arrest report said.

According to the report, officers responded to Trails and Tails Park at 11645 Northwest 50th Street and found the children, a 5-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl, with a passerby who stopped to help them.

The girl said she was in a vehicle with Samuels after she saw him drinking alcohol at a local entertainment venue, and said after leaving he was driving erratically and struck a tree in the Doral/Sweetwater area, the report said.

She said she eventually got out of the car with the boy for their safety while Samuels drove off, leaving them unattended, the report said.

Samuels was found by police at the park throwing up, with damage to his car, the report said.

A DUI investigation revealed his blood alcohol level to be .202, more than twice Florida’s legal limit of .08, the report said.

Samuels was booked into jail. Attorney information wasn’t available.

The body was found shortly after 3 a.m. near the 400 block of Northwest North River Drive, not far from Kiki on the River, Miami Police officials said.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene. Their identity hasn’t been released.

No other details were immediately available. An investigation was ongoing.

The crash happened around 5 p.m. Saturday near the 1300 block of West Dania Beach Boulevard.

The home’s owner, Will, said he and his mother were inside when the car came crashing in through his living room.

“I was in the kitchen and all of a sudden I hear a loud bang and next thing I know it’s the car that ran into the house,” he said.

Deputies and fire rescue crews responded and found the injured female passenger, who was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Broward Sheriff’s Office officials said.

Will and his mother weren’t injured, but the crash caused severe damage to the home, which had to be boarded up.

While at the scene, investigators learned the driver, 35-year-old Jimmere Thomas, had returned to the scene as an observer, BSO officials said.

Thomas was taken into custody and faces charges including reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving with a suspended license.

Will said he had to board up the home and move out with his mother after the city deemed it unsafe.

“We got a lot to recover from now. After such a loss, it takes a while to recover from these types of things,” he said. “I feel frustrated. You wake up in the morning, you think things are going one way and then all of a sudden it does a complete 180.”

The Florida Highway Patrol said troopers responded to a crash with injuries at Ives Dairy Road.

According to the Florida Department of Transportation’s traffic website, all main travel lanes were shut down. Express lanes were moving at a crawl as some drivers attempted to get over.

It was not immediately clear who was hurt or what may have caused the crash.

Aerial video of the scene captured a motorcycle in the roadway, and a car with heavy damage.

Another crash involving a pickup truck at Northwest 62nd Street also caused delays in the southbound lanes of I-95.

Marc S. Horowitz, an assistant principal at Orange Brook Elementary School in Hollywood, was arrested Sunday in Weston, according to Broward Sheriff’s Office booking records.

NBC6 contacted BCPS for a statement regarding the arrest.

“He is being reassigned from the school following an off-campus incident, pending further Human Resources review and action, which may include termination,” BCPS spokesperson John J. Sullivan said.

“Broward County Public Schools holds its school leaders to the highest standards of professional conduct and takes matters that may fall short of those standards seriously,” Sullivan added.

Horowitz, 53, faces charges of robbery by sudden snatching without a firearm or weapon and battery involving domestic violence, according to booking information.

The BCPS employee was taken into custody in Weston and transported to the county jail.

NBC6 has also reached out to BSO for additional information about the circumstances surrounding the arrest, and we are waiting for a response.

Forces with the Revolutionary Guard Corps were observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into the strait, according to Tim Hawkins, a spokesperson for the U.S. Central Command. The U.S. military last week completed clearing sea mines from the strait’s international shipping routes.

Semiofficial news outlets in Iran reported sounds of explosions near Larak island on the strait. The Guard in a statement carried by Iran’s state broadcaster noted “the martyrdom and injury of several of our fighters and compatriots.”

Later, Iranian state television showed what it said were ballistic missiles being fired by Iran at U.S. bases in Jordan in response to the American strikes. Jordan’s armed forces said they intercepted eight missiles that penetrated the country’s airspace early Monday in the Mideast.

U.S. military officials disputed Iran’s claim that the latest American strikes were an act of aggression, calling them a “limited, precise action” against what they said were minelaying forces.

“In essence, Iran created the threat and the U.S. military eliminated it to protect civilian mariners, commercial shipping, and the free flow of global commerce,” U.S. Central Command said in a statement late Sunday.

A return to open conflict would be dangerous for the region, where Iran has targeted U.S. military bases and infrastructure in Gulf countries since the war began on Feb. 28.

The last time the U.S. military confirmed targeting Iran was on July 29, when it announced a “heavy wave of strikes” on dozens of Revolutionary Guard targets including coastal surveillance and defense sites. On Aug. 1, President Donald Trump said he would order the military to hold off on new strikes at the urging of Gulf allies Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The U.S. had turned to economic pressure

The attack comes just days after the Trump administration said it would turn its focus to increasing economic pressure — rather than military action — to try to end its war with Iran. The shifting strategy centers on threats to punish any country or entity that continues to conduct business with Tehran.

Sunday’s attack was a “fatal mistake by the Trump regime during the economic war” and the enemy will pay the consequences militarily and economically, a Guard spokesperson, Gen. Hossein Mohebi, said in a statement carried by Iranian media.

The U.S. turn to using sanctions came as the administration weighs diminished munitions stockpiles after months of war, sparking concerns that the prolonged conflict could undermine U.S. military readiness in other parts of the globe.

As the conflict grinds on, Trump’s talk of finding a quick end to the war also appears to be fading. He stressed last week that he’s “not in a hurry” to get Iran back to the negotiating table, and he continues making the case that the Islamic Republic’s leadership is on the ropes.

Appointments to Iran’s senior security leadership in the past month, however, have signaled Tehran’s defiance after weathering decades of sanctions as well as a lack of tolerance for dissent at home.

Trump has consistently emphasized that the U.S. and Israel campaign has been devastating for Iran’s navy and air force. Iranian officials have said the country has suffered $270 billion in direct and indirect damage. Israeli military strikes in the first weeks of the war wiped out much of the theocratic government’s leadership structure.

Iran leans on the strait for leverage

But Iran has found leverage through its strikes against vessels on the Strait of Hormuz, where relatively few ships carrying oil and liquefied natural gas are risking passage. Iran still has enough drones and missiles to fire at vessels transiting the waterway through which 20% of the world’s oil normally flows.

Crude oil prices rose Sunday in response to the U.S. attack. The price for a barrel of U.S. oil went up 1.8% to $84.94, while the price for a barrel of Brent crude, the international standard, rose 1.9% to $89.79.

Tehran continues to assert that even after it works out a management plan for the strait with Oman, its neighbor on the other side of the waterway, the U.S. can’t use it until it fulfills its obligations under the memorandum of understanding the countries signed in mid-June.

Trump has repeatedly declared that the “Strait of Hormuz is open,” saying 24 vessels passed through last week. But that’s a fraction of the roughly 130 vessels that transited daily before the war began.

Earlier on Sunday, a multinational coalition overseen by the U.S. Navy said commercial traffic through the strait remained at “reduced levels.”

And a monitoring agency run by the British military said an unknown projectile struck a tanker ship on Saturday north of Khasab, Oman, in the strait. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Organization said no casualties or environmental impact had been reported, and cited unspecified military authorities. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

The U.S. military said that as of Sunday, it had redirected 83 commercial vessels and disabled three under its blockade of Iranian ports.

One witness said the vehicle sped past him moments before the crash, traveling so fast that it caused his own car to shake.

“I was going like 70 mph, and he passed fast,” the witness said. “My car moved from left to right.”

The vehicle overturned near Northwest 154th Street shortly before 7 a.m.

After the crash, witnesses said the vehicle began filling with smoke and caught fire. Several bystanders rushed to help the driver before firefighters arrived.

“The car started catching fire, and luckily I had a shovel in my car,” one witness said. “We opened it because it was full of smoke.”

Another witness described the moments after the crash.

“We just turned off the fire because it was catching on fire and the driver was unresponsive,” the witness said.

Firefighters and paramedics soon arrived and used the Jaws of Life to gain access to the vehicle and reach the driver. NBC6 cameras captured crews placing the driver on a stretcher before the person was taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital.

The driver’s condition has not been released.

Parts of the Palmetto Expressway were temporarily shut down as crews responded to the scene and cleared the wreckage. All lanes later reopened.

The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation. Authorities have not said what caused the crash, and the circumstances leading up to the rollover remain under investigation.

While not enough to end the drought outright, welcome rainfall swept across Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands to round out the weekend.

The mass of moisture will continue to move westward as a tropical wave over the coming days and will have a low chance of redevelopment.

Computer model guidance remains spread out and mostly uninspired through late week.

While a few models may aim to breathe new life into the system, the current environment of upper-level wind shear and a swift forward speed will be prohibitive over the next day or so.

However, if necessary, a Hurricane Hunter flight is tentatively scheduled to fly near the central Bahamas on Tuesday to investigate, should conditions warrant.

For South Florida and the Keys, the forecast message remains the same. August will close and September will begin on a wet note as daily storms persist, intertwined with some sunshine. With yearly rainfall deficits hovering around 12 to 15 inches for Fort Lauderdale and Miami, persistent rain this week, spread out over multiple days, would prove beneficial.

Should the remnants head toward the NBC6 viewing area, the peak of the moisture surge would fall Thursday and Friday.

On Sunday morning, Trump posted on Truth Social that he plans to use Venezuelan oil to replenish the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, calling it a “gift from Venezuela.”

Trump described the agreement as the biggest oil deal in the world in a post on Truth Social.

Under the plan, a new company would hold concessions for 100 years. The United States would receive 55% of the oil produced through its ownership stake and oil purchased at cost, according to Trump.

The president said the agreement could increase the global oil supply and, over the long term, help lower gas prices in the United States.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the agreement a major win for Americans and Venezuelans. He said it could bring nearly $100 billion in private investment to Venezuela.

Interim Venezuelan leader Delcy Rodríguez also praised the agreement in a post on X, calling it a new era of recovery, growth, production, security and prosperity.

But some U.S. lawmakers are raising concerns about the deal, particularly its long-term commitment to Venezuela.

Rep. María Elvira Salazar said she supports the agreement but questioned whether Rodríguez is the right person to make such a deal with.

Salazar also warned that a 100-year commitment would require strong democratic institutions, the rule of law and free elections.

The agreement is also drawing attention in South Florida, home to a large Venezuelan community.

During an appearance in Doral on Friday, Byron Donalds, the Republican candidate running for Florida governor, said he was in support of the deal. 

Analyst Salim Daher said the agreement could give the United States a closer and more stable source of oil while bringing investment and jobs to Venezuela.

Critics of the agreement say the United States should prioritize restoring democracy in Venezuela before making a long-term commitment involving the country’s oil industry.

According to Captain David Ordille of the Trenton Police Department, the mass shooting happened around 12:25 a.m. on Sunday morning along the 100 block of Locust Street in Trenton, New Jersey.

Early Sunday morning, police had an entrance to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, about two-miles away from the scene of the shooting, taped off and a vehicle that was parked at the emergency room entrance to the facility was seen being towed away.

The vehicle had visible damage.

Then, at some point, the shooting started.

She said after an initial volley of shots, the crowd thought the shooting was over, before it erupted again.

However, she did not know how many people were firing.

Details about victims in this shooting

In a morning update, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said the victims who died were a 33-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man. On Monday, loved ones and officials identified the victims as Tyaisha West and Yahsim Howlett.

While the mayor and police initially claimed nine people were hurt in the shooting — the prosecutor’s office, who are investigating the incident, claimed eight people have been hospitalized after being injured in this shooting, two women and six men, ranging in age from 23 to 43 years old.

Asked about the inconsistency, officials said, the additional person was an individual that was hospitalized following a crash tied to this incident.

Also, officials claim the shooting happened after “multiple suspects walked up to the party and began to fire into the crowd.”

In a statement on social media, Trenton Mayor W. Reed Gusciora said one of the victims who died had recently returned to the community after a period of incarceration.

“We understand that one of the individuals who lost his life had been working to turn his life around after returning home from incarceration and had recently been recognized for his commitment to reentry and positive change,” the mayor wrote in a statement.

Gusciora estimated about 200 people were at the event when the shooting took place.

“Everybody was having fun. Music was playing. Everybody’s having fun. Then, seconds later the shots just went off,” one witness said. “I just heard two shots first, and then about ten more after that, and then ten more after.”

An investigation ‘in its infancy’

On Sunday afternoon, Gusciora met with members of the press to discuss the investigation, saying the incident unfolded when an “unauthorized” event “got out of control.”

“The hearts of our city go out to the families and to the victims that took part to an unauthorized party that was then brought to our attention when it got out of control,” said the mayor.

Also, during the afternoon update, Steve Wilson, the police director for Trenton, New Jersey, said there was little to share as the investigation was still “in its infancy.”

Wilson said police were aware of the gathering and had been out to the area several times overnight. There may have even been police present at the scene when the shooting occurred, he said.

“That has yet to be confirmed, but I believe that’s where it’s going,” he said.

Typically, he said, police shut down large gatherings that are unregistered — officials said large gatherings require streets to be closed off and security to be hired — but in this case, that wasn’t done.

“This crowd was gathering up, so, it was ordered by the street supervisor that extra attention be provided here, but unfortunately the crowd was larger than the police presence,” he said. “And, even sometimes with the presence of police, these things happen. And, it’s unfortunate that it’s that way, but there are people in this city and others that are just dastardly and evil and it doesn’t matter who’s around, they are just intent on destruction.”

Asked why the gathering wasn’t shut down before the shooting occurred, Wilson said that will be part of the ongoing investigation.

At the scene early Sunday, investigators were seen placing over 50 evidence markers along the ground.

Also, on Sunday morning, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill said she was briefed on the situation and the attorney general’s office was working with law enforcement officials on the ground as the investigation continued.

Why it matters

A diet high in added sugar raises the risk of high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, cancer and premature death, a review of studies found.

Eating too much added sugar can also contribute to health problems such as weight gain, obesity and Type 2 diabetes, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes.

A bit of salt is necessary for good health, but most Americans consume too much. Excess salt can cause water retention, increasing blood volume and putting extra pressure on the arteries, says registered dietitian Natalie Rizzo, nutrition editor for TODAY.

Refined grains, like white rice or white bread, are missing parts of the whole grain, she adds, a process that removes about a quarter of the protein and at least half of the nutrients, like antioxidants and fiber, according to the Whole Grains Council. Refined carbs are digested quickly, leading to a blood sugar spike, registered dietitian Samantha Cassetty notes.

People should “prioritize fiber-rich whole grains and significantly reduce the consumption of highly processed, refined carbohydrates that displace real nourishment,” the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (2025-2030) advise.

Eating whole grains, rather than refined grains, can help prevent cardiovascular disease, a review of studies found.

“Look at your plate. (If) you see white bread, pasta, rice, flour, sugar, salt, you’re in a bad way. You’re going to slowly get diabetes and come to a cardiologist, and we’re going to have issues,” Stone says.

How to get started

Fill your diet with whole foods, Stone advises.

That means natural, unprocessed or minimally processed foods such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, meats, eggs, whole grains, beans, dairy and seafood, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (2025-2030).

These foods are full of nutrients and often provide fiber, including soluble fiber, which can help lower LDL cholesterol.

Also look for color, choosing a vibrant orange sweet potato over a white potato, for example, Stone advises.

The pigments in fruits or vegetables signal plant compounds that have “powerful antioxidant activity,” researchers note. Of course, there are plenty of whole foods that have a white color and are highly nutritious such as cauliflower, onions, fennel, garlic and many more.

Hundreds of years ago, humans walked everywhere; ate fruits, nuts and vegetables; and occasionally ate meat if they were able to hunt it, Stone points out.

“This is how we were engineered to be. What happened is we got lost, and we started eating white,” the cardiologist says.

“Stop eating white. That’s my rule.”

New video provided by the social media account “Only in Dade” captured an early-morning blast at a Miami-Dade gas station earlier this month.

The explosion happened on August 13 at pump No. 2 of a Chevron station at the corner of Bird Road and Southwest 87th Avenue, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said.

The footage shows a hooded individual placing a bag on top of the gas pump before an explosion erupts, knocking the person several feet backward.

At one point, the individual appears to lie on the ground for several seconds before getting up and running from the scene, according to the video.

Investigators said the suspect arrived at the gas station carrying a sign that read, “Cuban Lives Matter. End Embargo.”

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office released a flyer on August 18 requesting information on the suspect seen in the video. No additional details about the case have been released.

Health officials are warning swimmers to stay out of the water in Crandon Park North in Key Biscayne.

A water quality advisory was issued Saturday after tests revealed the area does not meet the recreational water quality criteria for the Enterococcus bacteria, the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County said.

The Enterococcus bacteria usually lives inside humans’ digestive or urinary tracts.

The advisory will remain in place until the bacteria levels drops to the accepted health level established by state guidelines.

Tests results from the water at Crandon Park North are available on the Florida Department of Health website.

Shocking video shows a deadly collision between a pickup truck and a flatbed semi in Palmetto Bay.

The crash happened early Saturday morning at the intersection of U.S.1 and Southwest 184^th Street. Surveillance footage showed the moments when a Dodge Ram slammed into the flatbed.

The impact sparked a small fire inside the pickup truck. The man driving that Dodge Ram died on the scene, Florida Highway Patrol said.

The driver of the flatbed was not hurt, officials confirmed.

For several hours, officials closed U.S.1 between Southwest 183^rd Street and 186^th Street.

The identity of the driver killed was not released.

A 15-year-old girl is expected to survive after she was shot early Saturday morning in Fort Lauderdale, police said.

Fort Lauderdale Police responded to the area of Northwest 17th Avenue and Northwest 9th Street at approximately 3:45 a.m. after receiving a report of a shooting.

Officers found the teen suffering from a gunshot wound and immediately began providing aid until Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue arrived, police said.

The teen was taken to Broward Health Medical Center as a trauma alert with serious injuries.

Police later said she is expected to survive.

The girl’s grandmother, Cynthia Scriven-Husband, told NBC6 the family believes the shooting may have followed a confrontation involving someone the teenager knew.

“My granddaughter was shot by a friend, an ex-friend, we understand,” Scriven-Husband said.

She said the family was told someone came to the home threatening the teenager. 

“All we know is that apparently they came to the house and was threatening her and said they wanted to fight her. And her and her friends came out the door and the next thing they know was pow, pow, pow, pow,” Scriven-Husband said.

She said she received a phone call and went to the home. 

“I went in and she was laying on the floor surrounded by blood,” she said.

Police have not released additional details about what led up to the shooting or identified a suspect.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Fort Lauderdale Police.

The United Nations children’s agency said late Friday that among those released are three children under the age of 2, a 7-year-old and two teenage girls.

“This release offers a rare moment of hope amid the violence threatening children in Haiti,” said Yannig Dussart, UNICEF’s deputy representative in Haiti. “The Kenscoff abduction was not an isolated incident but another stark reminder of the scale and frequency of attacks on children across the country.”

UNICEF said it worked with community leaders to help secure the release of the women and children. It wasn’t immediately clear if they needed medical treatment, and whether there are more women and children being held.

While individual kidnappings in Haiti are commonplace, mass abductions are more unusual. The outcomes vary: Some people are released without a ransom, while others are killed despite multiple ransoms being paid.

Gangs killed at least 47 people during the attack late Sunday on Kenscoff, a once-peaceful farming community nestled in the hills above Haiti’s capital.

A gang leader known as Izo 2 had threatened to execute all the hostages if police killed any gang members in their push to secure Kenscoff. Izo 2 leads an armed group in that area on behalf of and in coordination with other gang leaders including Izo, considered one of Haiti’s most powerful gang leaders.

The recent attack sparked an outcry Friday at an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council for swift deployment of the new U.N.-backed gang-fighting force and action to rein in the lawless bands.

Diplomats at the meeting called by the United States, Panama and Colombia expressed horror at the brutal attack.

Luis Ruiz Massieu, the U.N. special envoy to Haiti, said the attack has generated “a new wave of public indignation across all sectors of Haiti’s society, as well as international partners.”

Ruiz Massieu welcomed the decision by Haiti’s authorities to bring together the national police, armed forces and the gang suppression force to assess developments and coordinate plans. It was agreed that the gang suppression force would strengthen its presence in Port-au-Prince and that Haitian forces would reinforce their deployment in Kenscoff.

But the U.N. envoy and many council speakers stressed the urgent need to strengthen international security support for Haiti.

U.S. Deputy Ambassador Jennifer Locetta said the United States “is resolved and as committed as ever to supporting Haitian-led security efforts to end gang terror.”

She urged U.N. members to provide equipment and resources to enable the gang suppression force to deploy as quickly as possible — and to invest in jobs, infrastructure and other opportunities to provide an alternative path to joining a gang.

Locetta noted that gang coalitions have publicly said they are seeking to prevent Haitian voters from electing their representatives in a future election and that “terrorists” can’t be allowed to take democracy hostage.

“They cannot terrorize from the ends of rifles and from the comforts of toll stations – as they rob Haiti of their future,” she said, “We must protect civilians against these unconscionable acts.”

Indrika Ratwatte, the acting assistant secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, told the Security Council that the Kenscoff attack forced more than 2,600 people to flee their homes, many for the second or third time. He said people are traumatized, searching for missing relatives and uncertain about the future.

Nearly 1.5 million people, 12% of Haiti’s population, are internally displaced, half of them children, he said.

“Meanwhile, deportations to Haiti continue at scale,” Ratwatte said, referring to expulsions from the Dominican Republic and to the Trump administration’s push to remove Haitians living and working legally in the U.S. and others whose visas had expired or who had entered illegally.

“In the first eight months of 2026, almost 200,000 people were forcibly returned, a 10% increase compared with the same period last year,” many arriving with nothing, he said.

Calling violence especially toward women, girls and children “shocking,” he said the U.N.’s humanitarian partners “recorded over 5,500 incidents of gender-based violence, or about 30 cases per day, in the first six months of the year alone.”

One person was killed in an overnight shooting in Fort Lauderdale Saturday.

Police said they responded to a Shotspottter alert around 1:51 a.m. in an area near the 1600 block of Northwest 8^th Avenue. When officers arrived to the scene, they said they found an injured person. The victim was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, Fort Lauderdale Police told NBC6.

Several evidence markers were seen as crime scene investigators looked for clues in the neighborhood where the violence happened.

The circumstances surrounding the incident is unknown at this time. Detectives have not released any information on the identity of the victim and the suspect or suspects involved.

At relief centers, families of missing people waited anxiously for news of their loved ones as the death toll and the number of people unaccounted for continued to rise.

The combined toll in Nepal and Tibet rose to 691 dead and over 3,000 people missing after China’s latest update on Sunday. Chinese authorities reported 16 deaths and 546 missing, while Nepal’s disaster agency said late Saturday that the death toll had climbed to 675 with 2,498 people missing.

More than 3,700 people have been rescued in Nepal so far.

In Nuwakot, one of the Nepali districts devastated by the floods, helicopters arrived loaded with boxes and bags of aid, including clothes, instant noodles, crackers and rice. Others returned from the flood-hit areas carrying survivors.

An older man was carefully helped off one helicopter, while a soldier carried an older woman on his back to a medical tent. Most arrived with nothing except the clothes they were wearing.

About a dozen people emerged from another helicopter. Soldiers carried several babies who had been evacuated.

The evacuees had been brought from the nearby community of Trishuli.

Villagers return to devastated homes

As people were still leaving Trishuli, some village residents were returning to see what could be salvaged from their decimated homes.

One boy walked out of the village carrying muddy sandals from his house. Another woman, Shoba Shretha, returned to find Sweetie, the dog she was forced to leave behind when the floods came. Shretha sat on the ground petting her and feeding her water from a bottle.

At some point, relief coordinators cleared villagers, reporters and volunteers from the entrance to Trishuli, as excavation equipment drove into the flooded village to dig.

Families begin to lose hope

In Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, relatives and friends gathered outside the main government hospital from early morning, desperately searching for news of missing loved ones.

Many shuffled between the help desk and the hospital notice board, clutching photographs and scanning injured patients’ lists in the hope of finding them.

Dil Maya Lama stood weeping outside the help desk at the hospital, searching for information about her missing 26-year-old brother, a driver for a hydropower company in Rasuwa. She had traveled from Ramechhap, about 130 kilometers (80 miles) away.

“I came here with the hope that I might find him,” she said. “There is no information about him.”

Nelza Moktan anxiously sought information about her missing cousin, who also worked as a driver in Rasuwa.

“I feel hopeless. It has already been four days,” she said.

Families covered hospital walls with posters showing missing relatives, photographs and contact numbers in a desperate appeal for any clue that could bring them home.

Families search paper lists for any clue

Back in Nuwakot, military personnel taped sheets of paper listing dozens of missing people to a wall at a relief center.

Families crowded around to scan the names of the missing and dead, taking photos and wiping away tears.

Rajesh Kumar Ram desperately searched through a list for his son’s name.

“I’m hopeful, by chance, that my son is somewhere,” he said, crying as he spoke. “Maybe they find him stuck somewhere. I’m waiting for that moment only.”

Outside, people walked along mud-covered streets past signs of the disaster. On one street, a truck was stuck in the mud with its bed raised in the air.

Priti Kharel stood outside the entrance to the army barracks, holding a poster with a picture of her brother, Milan Kharel, who works as an engineering geologist at Doosan Enerbility. His family hasn’t heard from him since the floods.

“It’s already four days,” said Kharel, who believes his brother could be one of the people trapped inside the tunnel of a hydropower construction site, where authorities have rescued some people.

“We want the government to rescue him as soon as possible,” she added.

Rescuers battle to find survivors in disaster-hit areas

Search and rescue efforts continued at several locations in Nepal and China’s Tibet, including the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project in Nepal’s Rasuwa district and the severely damaged Gyirong border crossing on the Chinese side.

Nepali Army spokesperson Brig. Gen. Raja Ram Basnet said rescue efforts would continue at the hydropower construction site, where authorities believe more than 100 people are trapped in a tunnel filled with thick mud.

Rescuers had been on high alert for more flooding from a new lake that formed high up in the Himalayan mountains after the initial floods Wednesday.

Monitoring data from the Chinese Ministry of Water Resources showed late Friday that the lake had dwindled in size. The water level dropped by 10 meters (32 feet) from the high point on Thursday morning, Chinese broadcaster CCTV said.

The Chinese broadcaster showed images Saturday of rescuers arriving at Gyirong Port, the hard-hit border crossing with Nepal. “Anyone, anyone?” rescuers yelled.

It was not immediately known how many people were at the border checkpoint building when the floods hit.

Hundreds of the missing are foreigners who were in the area to work, trek or make a pilgrimage to a sacred peak.

Chinese state media reported Sunday that the 261 missing foreigners include 104 people from Nepal, 49 from India, 33 from Latvia, 18 from the United States, 15 from Britain and several dozen from other countries.

Steep mountains and narrow gorges hamper rescue operations

In a news briefing Saturday, Nepalese Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal said authorities have mobilized all available resources with support from international assistance for search, rescue, relief and recovery operations, with a particular focus on locating those still missing.

“This is currently our national priority,” he told reporters Saturday.

He said rescue operations are challenging because of steep, tall mountains and narrow gorges in the disaster-hit region.

Khanal said the government has sought specialized support from Nepal’s neighbors in tunnel rescue, survivor-detection technology, rapid forensic and DNA analysis, as well as morgue refrigerators.

An 11-member tunnel rescue reconnaissance team from India has been deployed while a similar rescue team from China is expected shortly, he added.

The minister said Nepal has received over 57 metric tons of relief supplies from India, with additional aid arriving from China, Japan, Australia and other countries. He added that further support will be sought as need assessments continue.

“This is great. I’m actually a productive member of society,” Hughes told NBC6.  

In June 2025, Hughes was not earning money. He was cited by a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy for panhandling in Pompano Beach. 

It was not Hughes’s first run-in with the law over the years. 

“I’m just going to tell you how many times I’ve been arrested: 11 times in my 26 years of life. Not something to be proud of,” he said.  

Hughes told us he was homeless for six years – his addiction to drugs had taken over. 

“It was awful. Fentanyl and crack. Just living like an animal out there. I could have been dead. There was times I should have been dead,” he said. 

Thankfully, his story did not end on the streets. But it was a key connection he made there that began the 26-year-old’s process of turning his life around. 

Hughes met Victor Oliveira, known online as Victor “The Good Boss.” 

Oliveira has grown a massive social media following for his efforts to get people experiencing homelessness and addiction off the streets. 

“I love helping people, and I’m addicted to it,” Oliveira told us. 

He said he went looking for Hughes after seeing a video of him online – and found him.    

“This is my phone number. What I’ll do is I’ll put you in treatment, get you clean,” Oliveira said to Hughes in an Instagram video from July 2025.

“His situation was very bad, very skinny. He was in a really bad spot. I’m just so grateful that I was there at the time and he took me up on my opportunity,” Oliveira said. 

Oliveira took him to get food and new clothes before bringing him to a detox facility. 

In September 2025, Hughes successfully completed community court, a jail diversion program in Pompano Beach. 

That meant the panhandling charge from more than a year earlier was dismissed. 

Last month, Hughes said he marked one year sober and counting. 

“Victor The Good Boss. He saved my life, dude,” Hughes said.

“It’s making my eyes water. I give him so much credit. I’m so proud of him,” Oliveira said. 

Hughes’ boss, Tom Hebert, is proud too. 

“I love the guy. He’s becoming family. He’s doing awesome. I mean the basics of just the job are getting here on time and being motivated to work, and he’s got that naturally,” Hebert said. 

Two weeks after our first visit, NBC6 returned to the dock. 

Even with the intense heat, Hughes and Hebert continued their work on the construction project.  

And for Hughes, the progress he’s making is also personal: “Just one day at a time. That’s all I’m doing. I’m so grateful to still be here. I really am.”

Trump in a social media post announced the agreement he said was negotiated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodriguez.

“The United States of America has just entered into an Agreement with the Country of Venezuela on, THE BIGGEST OIL DEAL IN WORLD HISTORY!” Trump wrote.

Rodríguez’s government in a statement said the deal involves the development of 17 fields with a proven potential of 65 billion barrels. It said the agreement could draw $100 billion in investment into Venezuela’s oil industry and yield over $209 billion in taxes for Caracas.

Rodríguez in a posting on Telegram predicted the deal “will have a significant impact on our nation’s revival.”

The agreement allows for the United States to partner with an unnamed private operator in Venezuela to create a new private company to take hold of the reserves, according to a U.S. official familiar with the contours of the deal.

The official, who was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity, added that Rodriguez granted the company 100-year rights to develop the oil fields.

The deal gives the United States 55% effective output of the new private company — including an ownership stake and rights to buy oil at cost. The company would be the second largest corporate holder of proven reserves after Saudi Aramco, according to the official.

Trump is under pressure to show he’s lowering oil costs

The announcement comes nearly nine months after the U.S. military at Trump’s direction carried out an operation to capture Venezuela’s president Nicolás Maduro and spirit him to the United States to face federal narcoterrorism and drug trafficking charges.

Trump faces mounting pressure to address high gas prices as the war in Iran on Friday reached a six-month milestone with no conclusion in sight. The U.S. has tapped its strategic petroleum reserves, which in early August fell below 300 million barrels, down by more than 100 million barrels since the start of 2026.

The U.S.-Israel war against Iran has led to a dramatic slowdown of Gulf oil moving through the Strait of Hormuz, which about 20% of the world petroleum passed through prior to the conflict.

The average price of gas in the U.S. stood at about $4.09 a gallon on Friday, according to AAA. The average price was $3.21 at the same time last year.

A significant drop in U.S. gas prices tied to the agreement should not be expected immediately. Experts have repeatedly warned that a substantial boost in Venezuelan oil production will not happen quickly as repairing and expanding infrastructure takes years and requires billions of dollars.

Persuading big American oil companies to return the region could face headwinds given the political uncertainty and decades of badly damaged infrastructure.

Days after the ouster of Maduro, Trump gathered oil executives at the White House and called on them to rush back into Venezuela. Executives expressed interest in the opportunity but there was also a measure of caution given their past experience in the country.

Darren Woods, CEO of ExxonMobil, the largest U.S. oil company, said at that moment he saw the country as “un-investable.”

But Trump has insisted that his administration has brought a measure of stability to Venezuela.

He has argued that Venezuela stole U.S. oil when former Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez moved decades ago to nationalize hundreds of foreign-owned assets, including those owned by American oil companies.

Rodriguez, in one of her early moves after taking power, signed a law that opens the nation’s oil sector to privatization and reversed a bedrock tenet of the self-proclaimed socialist movement that had ruled the country for more than two decades.

Rubio said on X that the agreement would usher in billions in private investment into Venezuela and lead to lower gas prices in the United States.

“This deal is a huge win for both the American and Venezuelan people,” Rubio posted.

The oil bought from the new company would go toward filling the U.S. strategic petroleum reserve and toward military use, according to the U.S. official.

Venezuela has one of the largest oil reserves in the world, with an estimated 303 billion barrels of crude oil in the ground. That’s about 17% of the world’s supply, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Unlike other parts of the world, where geologists have to search for untapped oil, the reserves under Venezuela’s soil are largely mapped and known, experts say. But because of dilapidated infrastructure, the country only produces about 1% of the world’s oil.

Maduro remains jailed in the U.S. He has pleaded not guilty.

Jameson Rodriguez was lying on the couch when, in a matter of seconds, a powerful bolt of lightning struck just steps away from the home.

“Everything was white, and I knew that lightning had hit, but I had never been that close to it before,” he told NBC6 on Friday.

He said it felt like an explosion.

“The whole house shook,” he said. “It moved the camera too. I got up, and I looked to see if my dog was OK.”

“Jesus Christ!” Jameson exclaims in the home surveillance video. “It knocked down the tree.”

His sister January ran to look outside and saw their massive tree split into pieces.

“It was like crackling,” she said. “It hit it, and then after the branch fell off to the ground, there was still a huge crack in the middle.”

For families across the area, the video is another frightening reminder that lightning can strike with little warning, and the consequences can be deadly.

The frightening incident comes just days after another lightning strike shattered the lives of a family in Margate, killing a mother and her 2-year-old child.

The odds of being struck by lightning in Florida are about one in 500,000, experts say. If you hear and see thunder and lightning, go indoors as soon as possible. Stay away from water like the ocean or pools, and never stand in an open field or under trees.

Grand Theft Auto 6 has been in the works for years and after multiple delays is set to be released on Nov. 19.

Though set in the fictional Vice City, Miami and South Florida serve as the game’s inspiration, with locations similar to Miami Beach’s Ocean Drive, Miami International Airport, the Florida Everglades and more.

Developer Rockstar Games reached out to the county looking to collaborate on the release, and the county responded with ideas.

They include wrapping the Metromover with the Vice City logo, splashing Vice City murals on high-profile public buildings, and even branding manhole covers with the Vice City logo.

County officials see it as a gaming tourism opportunity, with GTA fans visiting Miami to see the sites in real life.

The county also sees an opportunity to generate revenues, because GTA’s exposure will reach millions of people worldwide.

“Given Miami-Dade’s clear influence on the game, we think there could be a unique opportunity to generate revenue for the County while showcasing Miami-Dade to a massive audience,” a county officials said in a statement Friday.

Officials with the county said they’ve had discussions with Rockstar Games but nothing has been formally agreed to or approved.

Local gamers like Kanon Romero, with ROK Gaming Lounge in Palmetto Bay, are excited for the game’s release.

“We just saw the trailer last night and it blew all of our minds,” Romero said. “Definitely seeing the MacArthur, the Venetian, Wynwood. It is awesome to play a game that is in your neighborhood instead of and not in some fantasy world.”

Richard Nieves Jr., 38, is facing an attempted first-degree murder charge in the shooting that happened around 12:30 p.m. Thursday outside the Goodwill at 19300 Northwest 27th Avenue, an arrest report said.

According to the report, surveillance video showed the suspect arrive in a dark-colored pickup truck, enter the Goodwill and later approach the victim outside.

The suspect punched the victim and the two got into a physical altercation before the suspect returned to the pickup and drove to the rear of the Goodwill, the report said.

The victim said the man then fired a shot from the truck that hit him in the face, the report said.

Authorities said the victim was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment.

A witness told investigators they heard a gunshot and saw a dark gray Dodge Ram with a distinctive decal driving from behind the Goodwill.

The vehicle was later identified and found to be registered to Nieves, and the victim identified Nieves as the gunman in a photo lineup, the report said.

Nieves was arrested near his home and booked into jail. Attorney information wasn’t available.

On CBS News’ “Face the Nation” on Aug. 23, host Margaret Brennan said Florida is below the immunization rate needed to achieve herd immunity for measles. Brennan then asked Donalds if his guidance for Florida parents would be to get their kids vaccinated.

“No,” Donalds said, “actually my message to Floridians and, quite frankly, to Americans is the reason why we have seen a measles outbreak in certain parts of the country is because of rampant illegal immigration into the United States from the previous administration.”

Donalds pointed to measles outbreaks in El Paso, Texas and southwest Florida, and said people who are in the U.S. illegally have not followed the measles, mumps and rubella vaccination schedule.

He continued, “So the key thing is, you number one, you got to control immigration into your country. You can’t have an entire segment of people, more than 10 million, coming to your country without that vaccination schedule.”

It’s inaccurate that 10 million immigrants entered the U.S. illegally during Joe Biden’s presidency, when the administration released about 4.3 million people into the U.S. to await immigration court hearings.

And there’s no evidence linking measles outbreaks to immigrants in the U.S. Infectious disease experts told PolitiFact that a decline in measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations in the U.S. is the primary driver of the outbreaks. Around 94% of confirmed cases in 2026 are in people who are unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown.

Donalds’ campaign did not respond to a request for information to support his statement.

Similar claims about immigrants circulated during measles outbreaks years before Biden’s administration.

George Rust, a Florida State University College of Medicine professor and epidemiologist, said the U.S. for decades had sporadic measles cases that typically started after U.S. travelers caught the virus overseas and experienced symptoms after returning home.

“Maybe one or two additional individuals would catch it from them, but because of high immunization rates and rapid public health response, there would be no second wave of cases,” Rust said. “Now, we are seeing more outbreaks because that same scenario plays out in the context of clusters of people who are unvaccinated, which allows for greater spread.”

What’s the status of measles in the U.S.?

The ongoing 2026 measles outbreak has surpassed 2025’s record-breaking case numbers, which were the most since 1991.

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus. Infection can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia, brain swelling and death. In 2025, two children and one adult died from measles, the first U.S. fatalities attributed to the virus in more than a decade. On Aug. 25, Pennsylvania’s health department said two more unvaccinated people, whose ages were not made public, died from the virus.

Receiving the recommended two doses of the MMR vaccine is 97% effective against infection.

“Ninety percent of unvaccinated people who are exposed are likely to catch it,” Rust said. “Because of the high rate of infectivity, measles outbreaks can spread exponentially in segments of the population that are unimmunized or not immune.”

Is measles spread by immigrants?

The CDC does not report the immigration status of people infected with measles in the U.S., making it impossible to definitively tie any measles outbreaks to immigrants in the country illegally. Contact tracing during past outbreaks has shown that measles typically enters the U.S. from unvaccinated residents who traveled internationally, mostly to Europe and the Western Pacific region.

The U.S. achieved measles elimination status in 2000, which means the virus stopped continuously spreading domestically.

“Any given chain begins with someone who traveled,” said Dr. Paul Spiegel, distinguished professor of the practice and director at Johns Hopkins Center for Humanitarian Health. “An introduction becomes an outbreak only when the virus reaches enough susceptible, unvaccinated people, and the importation data do not point to migrants in any case.”

Dr. William Schaffner, a Vanderbilt Health infectious diseases specialist, agreed, saying “the very substantial majority” of cases are “caused by our own unvaccinated children who go abroad, pick up the measles and then bring it back home.” Only a minority of cases, he said, are caused by foreigners coming to the U.S.

Measles outbreaks on the U.S. west coast often come from unvaccinated U.S. residents returning from Asia, experts said, while east and central U.S. outbreaks typically originate from U.S. residents returning from Europe. “I have never seen data indicating that notable introductions have come from south of the border,” Schaffner said.

In El Paso, Texas, a measles outbreak in early 2026 occurred among immigrants in an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility and a nearby federal detention facility that houses both migrants and U.S. citizens. Public health officials attributed the spread to the facilities’ poor conditions and a lack of federal data on inmates’ vaccination statuses. It’s unclear when any of the infected immigrants entered the U.S. ICE detains many people who are not recent arrivals.

In Southwest Florida, where Donalds lives, Florida’s largest outbreak was centered on Ave Maria University in Collier County. The university, citing the state health department’s contact tracing, said it most likely began with a student’s out-of-state holiday travel.

Some of the largest outbreaks this year were in areas with large Amish and Mennonite communities that typically have lower vaccination rates. Past outbreaks also clustered in similar, vaccine-averse communities.

MMR vaccination in other countries

Countries where many immigrants in the U.S. illegally come from, such as Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras, all include the MMR vaccine in their routine childhood schedules.  

Experts said the problem is not that these countries lack vaccination programs, but that many have seen vaccine coverage slip below the 95% threshold needed to stop measles transmission — the same problem the U.S. has. 

This year, El Salvador and Honduras have reported small numbers of measles cases. Guatemala and Mexico are dealing with large outbreaks, with the vast majority of cases occurring in unvaccinated people.

Mexico’s measles epidemic, however, originated in the U.S., not the other way around. The country’s outbreak began in Chihuahua, Mexico, in February 2025, and was traced to an unvaccinated nine-year-old from a Mennonite community who was infected while visiting relatives in Seminole, Texas, as the state’s outbreak was taking off.

“Discussions of migration and infectious disease often get the causal relationship backward,” Spiegel said. “Human mobility of every kind — tourism, business travel, migration — can move a virus from one place to another, but movement does not by itself create an outbreak; susceptibility does.”

Our ruling

Donalds said “rampant illegal immigration” during the Biden administration is the cause of “a measles outbreak in certain parts of the country.”

Measles is typically introduced by U.S. travelers returning from international travel. Experts said a U.S. decline in MMR vaccinations is the primary driver of the outbreak.

We found no data pointing to immigrants who entered the country illegally as the reason for any outbreak. Top countries of origin for immigrants in the U.S. illegally also include the MMR vaccine in their routine childhood schedules.

The burden of proof is on the speaker, and Donalds provided no evidence to support his statement. We rate it False.

The deal cut short a landmark trial in federal court in Oakland, California, where the Instagram and Facebook parent company was fighting claims that it deliberately designed features that get children addicted. The agreement calls for Meta to pay out up to $18 billion and make a changes to how their platforms are operated, with new guardrails for kid safety.

It is one of many courtrooms around the country where Meta, TikTok, Snapchat and YouTube have been defending themselves against allegations their platforms have negatively impacted children’s mental health or otherwise hurt them.

Here is a look at some of the biggest cases against social media companies.

California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey’s joint case

The settlement hit during the second week of what was expected to be a six-week trial in Oakland, with testimony from witnesses that would have likely included Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

It featured four states as plaintiffs: California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey. They were among dozens of states that filed a lawsuit three years ago targeting Meta’s design features and the subsequent harm to children on its platforms. The other 25 states were expecting to have trials later, but the settlement also stops those from going forward.

The states were seeking extensive financial damages that could, in theory, total billions of dollars, plus changes to how the company operates Facebook and Instagram.

Tennessee argued Instagram harms kids’ mental health

The settlement also resolved a trial that was underway in Tennessee against Meta.

The Tennessee attorney general’s office was a part of the multistate investigation into social media companies that resulted in the 2023 filing against Meta by dozens of states, but opted to file in its own local court.

“We took Meta to trial because Instagram was hurting kids and misleading parents. Now we’re ending the trial with a settlement that imposes unprecedented protections for kids and delivers record-setting money for Tennessee’s Children’s Digital Protection Fund,” Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti said.

Skrmetti, and several other attorneys general, said the settlement addressed Meta’s role in an “industrywide problem” and implored other social platforms to follow suit in implementing similar safety measures.

New Mexico’s case resulted in hefty fine, Florida intends to file its own

New Mexico was not among the 48 states involved in the settlement because it already won a court case against Meta.

The state argued the company knowingly harmed children’s mental health and concealed what it knew about child sexual exploitation on its platforms. A jury sided with the state in March, finding there were thousands of violations, each counting separately toward a penalty of $375 million.

In early August, the judge in the case ordered Meta to pay an additional $567 million to address harms to young people from its platforms in the second phase of the trial. The judge also outlined new safety measures he ordered as a part of the ruling, including a time limit of 90 hours per month for users under 18, AI chatbot restrictions, and mandatory warnings on the platforms. Meta has said it disagrees with the verdict.

The other state that did not join the settlement was Florida, where the attorney general said the settlement was not tough enough on Meta.

“This is a trillion and a half dollar company,” Attorney General James Uthmeier said during a Q&A following an unrelated press conference in The Villages, Florida. “This is a rounding error for them… Weeks of revenue. That’s peanuts. That’s not sending a message.”

Uthmeier referred to New Mexico’s lawsuit in his comments, saying Florida is “more than 10 times the size” and would “not capitulate.”

“We will not sell out when it comes to our kids. They need to take this seriously. If they’re going to treat it like a joke, like an insult, then they’re going to have to fight. We got the best dang legal team in the country. We will see them in court,” he said.

School districts across the country have sued social media companies

Hundreds of school districts in the U.S. have filed lawsuits against the major social media companies seeking compensation for costs they say they incurred dealing with harms to children’s mental health from social media addiction.

A lawsuit brought by a small, rural Kentucky school district was set to go to trial this summer in federal court in California, but defendants Meta, TikTok, Snap and YouTube each settled before the trial began.

The Kentucky case was also selected as a bellwether out of 1,200 similar cases. The plaintiffs’ attorneys said in a statement that their “focus remains on pursuing justice for the remaining 1,200 school districts who have filed cases.”

Jury in Los Angeles trial found Meta, YouTube liable for harms

Earlier this year, a jury found Meta and YouTube liable in a case that centered on social media addiction and claims the companies designed their platforms to hook young users without concern for their well-being.

The plaintiff, known by her initials KGM, testified at trial that she became addicted to social media as a child and that it exacerbated her mental health struggles. After more than 40 hours of deliberations, a majority of jurors agreed and awarded $6 million in total damages.

It was a first-of-its-kind lawsuit that was randomly selected as a bellwether trial, or a test case for both sides to see how their arguments play out before a jury, and thus could influence the outcome of similar lawsuits.

TikTok and Snapchat were named as defendants in the lawsuit, but settled before the trial began. Meta and YouTube have each appealed the verdict.

Individual plaintiffs have filed similar lawsuits

The Los Angeles trial was the first of its kind, but there are thousands of similar lawsuits filed against social media companies by individuals.

Many allege the platforms’ design features addicted them to social media, which led to adverse mental health outcomes. But there are also other harms plaintiffs say stemmed from young people’s use of social media.

Some lawsuits have been filed by families of children and young adults who died by suicide after problematic use of social media, and families whose kids died from accidental overdoses from drug purchases facilitated by social platforms.

Staffers are monitoring the area for the crocodile and if found, will determine whether it needs to be relocated, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said Friday.

The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the canal behind the family’s home in the 6200 block of Southwest 64th Court.

Owner Enrique Pomares said he let his dog, Kygo, out in the backyard like usual when the crocodile suddenly came up and snatched him.

Kygo’s body was found hours later on the other side of the canal.

American crocodiles are native to South Florida and were federally listed as an endangered species in 1975.

Their numbers have rebounded from a few hundred to as many as 2,000 today, the FWC said.

The small croc population and their wariness of people make conflicts with humans rare, and only two bite incidents have been documented in Florida, officials said.

“Crocodile sightings have increased in recent years for a few reasons. The crocodile population in Florida is increasing as a result of their population recovery, being seen in locations that they haven’t been to in decades, along with the growing number of people living and spending time on or near Florida’s waters,” the FWC said in a statement. “It’s important to remember to keep pets on a leash and small children away from the water’s edge, especially during nighttime hours, to avoid cases of mistaken identity. Pets often resemble crocodiles’ natural prey.”

The suspects are 40-year-old Geybert Alexander Garcia and 24-year-old Melany Perdomo. They are accused of breaking into the home of Adam Hlavaty and Henry Parra, a couple killed in the Aug. 19 helicopter crash in Kenya that took the lives of multiple people with ties to South Florida.

Police said Garcia and Perdomo broke into the Coral Gables home and ransacked the place over two days, stealing business documents, jewelry, luxury cars and artwork, including a sculpture worth about $500,000. They were allegedly caught with the couple’s personal belongings, Range Rover and Porsche Taycan.

Coral Gables Police Chief Ed Hudak said officers tracked the vehicles and some other belongings to a home where the suspects were arrested. They searched the property, described as a “ground-zero of identity theft,” and found firearms, laptops, documents and passports.

The chief also said that the couple died on a Wednesday, and by Monday, fake IDs using their address had been printed.

“These people we believe right now were targeted the day they were killed in that crash, which I find reprehensible,” Hudak said. “We found, and I mean mounds of evidentiary-valued material within that residence… we have basically kicked a beehive of a criminal enterprise.”

The U.S. Secret Service, the Bureau of Diplomatic Security and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are also now involved in the investigation.

In a pre-trial detention hearing on Thursday, a judge upheld Judge Mindy Glazer’s initial decision to hold the couple without bond. Perdomo was also behind bars on an immigration hold.

Sean Edward Uribe, 37, was arrested Monday on a battery charge in connection with the most recent incident that happened Aug. 17 at the Ross store at 13780 Southwest 56th Street, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office officials said.

According to an arrest report, the victim, an employee of the store, said she didn’t witness the incident since she was rearranging shelves, but a witness said she saw a man, later identified as Uribe, walking back and forth aimlessly in a suspicious manner before he started grabbing and massaging his genitals over his clothing.

“Furthermore, the witness observed the defendant discretely positioning himself directly behind the victim and putting both of his hands in front of him near his crotch area,” the report said. “When the defendant began to walk away, the witness observed the defendant had possibly sprayed an unknown liquid on the victim’s shirt as he walked away from the scene and left the store.”

The witness approached the victim to tell her what happened and the victim noticed the back of her shirt and pants had “a cloudy sticky substance from an unknown fluid,” the report said.

Detectives watched surveillance footage and were able to identify the suspect as Uribe from other incidents, the report said.

The sheriff’s office sent the liquid substance that was sprayed on the victim for DNA testing, but deputies believe it’s consistent with bodily fluids.

Records show Uribe had been arrested in May in connection with another similar incident that happened at the Marshalls at 8700 Mills Drive in Town and Country.

The victim in that incident said she was in the checkout line when she felt the presence of a man, later identified as Uribe, who was behind her, then noticed he had his phone out and was either taking photos or video of her in line, an arrest report said.

At one point, the woman said she felt what she believed was the man pressing himself against her from behind, then felt a “warm squirt” of a substance on her back, the report said.

Uribe was also arrested in similar incidents that happened in July and August of 2024 at the Marshalls at 14093 Southwest 88th Street, records showed.

He was arrested in yet another incident in June of 2024 at the Ross at 14840 Kendall Drive for using a syringe to spray an unknown liquid on a shopper before he started filming her, an arrest report said.

The sheriff’s office described Uribe as a “repeat offender” with three prior battery convictions for the similar crimes.

“For him, specifically, my unit knows him pretty well, it’s not surprising for him per se but in general it’s pretty shocking that people would do this in front of cameras, anybody around, kids, anybody who’s looking, it’s shocking that he has the guts to do something like this,” MDOS’s Diego Mendoza said. “As far as I know, based on my research, there’s been three previous convictions before this one, and not just charges, convictions.”

Uribe was taken into custody at a probation and parole office on Monday and booked into jail. Attorney information wasn’t available.

Julie Pierre, founder of South Florida-based viral bakery business Roll and Dough, initially believed the driver she hired to deliver 400 cinnamon rolls to a farmers’ market took off with the pastries after they never made it to their destination on Saturday.

The 21-year-old took to social media on Thursday to say that she finally got the real story.

“Based on the limited information available to us at the time, we believed our cinnamon rolls had been stolen,” Roll and Dough said in a statement posted on Instagram. “Uber instructed us to file a police report, so we followed their guidance.”

“We did not know that the carrier, Ivan, had been detained by immigration authorities during the delivery,” the statement continued.

Sunrise Police confirmed the driver was taken into custody by U.S. Border Patrol (CBP) in Hollywood while he was en route to deliver the cinnamon rolls.

In a statement, a CBP spokesperson said the driver, Ivan Dario Rico Molano, was stopped at around 8:50 a.m. on Interstate 95 southbound near Sheridan Street “following a records check on a silver Kia Carnival.”

“The registered owner was identified as an alien without legal immigration status. During the encounter, the driver, identified as Ivan Dario Rico Molano, a citizen of Colombia, admitted to being in the United States without legal authorization,” the spokesperson said. “Mr. Molano was arrested and transported to the Dania Beach Border Patrol Station for processing. Records indicate he entered the United States legally in May 2021, but remained beyond his authorized period of stay.”

Rico Molano then contacted someone to take the vehicle, which had the storage containers with Roll and Dough’s cinnamon rolls inside, police said.

Pierre said a family member of the driver found the cinnamon rolls and returned them to the police station, where Roll and Dough were able to recover them.

“Based on what we now know, Ivan did not intentionally steal our cinnamon rolls. We are sincerely sorry that we described the situation that way before learning the complete circumstances,” the statement read. “We shared what we genuinely understood at the time, and now that detectives have provided us with new information, we are publicly correcting the record.”

The business also said they wanted to donate a portion of its proceeds to help the driver’s family and cover any legal fees.

A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth moves between the sun and the moon, creating a shadow that falls across the lunar surface.

Dr. Emily Rice, a professor of astrophysics at the City University of New York, said the event occurs when the sun, Earth and moon reach alignment. 

Unlike a solar eclipse, viewers do not need special glasses to safely watch a lunar eclipse.

Timing of the lunar eclipse

The eclipse unfolded over several hours Thursday night and early Friday morning.

• 9:23 p.m. – The eclipse begins: The moon starts to enter the faintest part of Earth’s shadow. The change will be very subtle at first and may be hard to notice with the naked eye. From Miami, the moon will be just above the horizon to the east-southeast.
• 10:33 p.m. – The partial eclipse begins: This is when the show really begins. The umbra — Earth’s dark shadow — will start to visibly cover the lunar disk. The moon will be above the horizon to the southeast.
• 12:12 a.m. – The eclipse reaches its peak: The most impressive moment arrives shortly after midnight, already into Friday. The moon will be deeply immersed in Earth’s shadow and may take on reddish, coppery, or orange tones. From Miami, it will be toward the south-southeast.
• 1:51 a.m. – The partial eclipse ends: The Moon will finish exiting Earth’s umbra. From here, the most obvious dark portion of the shadow will fade away.

Where to watch the eclipse

The eclipse began around 9:23 p.m. At maximum, around 12:12 a.m., it was about 51 degrees high toward the south-southeast — an excellent position for viewing from the metro area.

Rice said the sight would be especially striking from South Florida.

“A lot of the moon should also turn reddish,” Rice said. “It should be very, very cool to see this.”

Lunar eclipses occur periodically, but the next total lunar eclipse visible from the region will not occur until June 2029.

During nearly two hours in a Miami courtroom, the Tates, in shackles and tan jail jumpsuits, denied under oath criminal accusations across multiple countries, blasted their critics and described their brash online personas that exude wealth and excess as characters and not their true personalities.

The hearing ended after eight hours without a decision from U.S. Magistrate Lauren Louis, and the brothers headed back to jail.

Prosecutors rejected the brothers’ claim they are just acting. Assistant U.S. Attorney Abbie Waxman told a judge that Andrew Tate is accused of choking and holding victims and raping them while Tristan Tate is accused of human trafficking, money laundering and violence against minors.

The brothers also face sex crime charges in Romania and prosecutors said they have contacted witnesses in that case and talked about it on video.

“They promote incredible violence against women consistent with the allegations against them,” Waxman said.

Andrew Tate maintains his innocence on stand

Andrew Tate maintained his innocence on the stand. He said he can’t work with his Romanian lawyers while in jail in America and fears his absence will mean an unfair life sentence in Eastern Europe.

“If I lose a fair fight I can take it,” he said.

Lawyers for the Tates are asking a judge to allow them to be freed from custody at least until an extradition hearing can be held on their U.K. rape and trafficking charges. They have remained in a federal detention center in Miami since they were arrested July 18.

Their attorneys argued that their high profile and active social media presence make it nearly impossible for them to flee.

The U.K.’s request was out of line because their criminal case in Romania is going first. Romanian officials have let them remain free until the proceedings conclude and they have not tried to flee and are complying with all court restrictions.

The judge reminded defense attorneys she has to follow U.S. laws. Prosecutors said the serious U.K. charges increased the risk for the Tates.

No date for an extradition hearing has been set. The U.K. has until mid-September to provide evidence to the State Department.

Prosecutors say Tates bragged about wealth and multiple passports

Prosecutors said the brothers appear to have money and have bragged about multiple passports.

The Tates said their claims of wealth are largely exaggerated to boost their social media personas. They said luxury items like the $50 million yacht or $2.1 million Aston Martin car seen in their videos don’t belong to them.

But prosecutors showed a passport for “Vladimir Scorpius” from Mexico with Tristan Tate’s date of birth and photo. They said it has a real Mexican identification number. They also told the judge the brothers have shown no evidence the luxury boat or cars were rented or borrowed.

Tates have long been polarizing online

The Tates have become among the world’s most polarizing internet personalities by promoting wealth, male dominance and misogyny through their social media empire.

Andrew Tate, 39, has said women who are sexually assaulted should bear some responsibility for the attacks and shared graphic descriptions of how he might attack women. Tristan Tate, 38, has worked with his brother on multiple businesses, including the production of online webcam pornography.

On his way into court Thursday, defense attorney Joseph McBride told reporters he hasn’t heard of a case where U.S. Magistrate Lauren Louis has allowed someone out on bail while awaiting an extradition hearing.

But while the odds aren’t in their favor, McBride felt like the truth was. He called them innocent, good men who have never run from the law.

Brothers testify they are taken out of context

In court, Tristan Tate was called to the stand Thursday and said he can’t prove he is innocent if he is kept in jail.

“I need to clear my name. I need to take part in these proceedings, I can’t do that from the secure housing unit,” he said.

Both brothers also complained of conditions at the Miami jail. Tristan Tate said there are ants and the only toilet in his cell is where anyone walking by can see him. He said he has lost 14 pounds eating mostly junk food in the nearly six weeks he has been in custody.

Prosecutors said prisoners are fed three balanced meals a day. They do not have access to scales, and medical records show the brothers have gained a few pounds.

Andrew Tate testified that people are confusing him with a character he plays online. He said people who accuse him of attacking women or supporting human trafficking are taking his comments out of context.

“On the internet, you have to shake people out of apathy,” he said.

The former professional kickboxers, who have dual U.S. and U.K. citizenship, have millions of social media followers and are vocal supporters of President Donald Trump. The White House has said the brothers shouldn’t expect any help from the president.

The arrests are the result of a two-year investigation into the theft of funds from five separate condo associations, Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said at a news conference Thursday.

Cordero-Stutz said the “brazen criminal enterprise” was run by the alleged mastermind, 60-year-old Juan Awais, who used his property management companies to pull off the scheme.

Awais would win over the condo board members, most of whom were elderly and spoke only Spanish, gaining their trust, investigators said.

Awais and the other suspects then used a network of companies to take money from the associations in multiple ways, including sending invoices to vendors for services that were already paid for or sending invoices for work that was never done, Cordero-Stutz said.

In one incident, one of the suspects pocketed hundreds of thousands of dollars from an insurance payment meant to repair a building after Hurricane Irma, the sheriff said.

The suspects targeted the Mira Villa Condo Association, Los Suenos Condo, Samari Lake East Condo Association, Lago Grande, and Country Lake Manors, authorities said.

Awais and the other suspects – Michael Irizarry, Delma Alonso, Johana Barrios Perez-Tapia, Juliet Ramos, and Cynthea Louise Waltz – face charges including grand theft, organized fraud, money laundering and racketeering, records showed.

Cordero-Stutz said so far authorities have confirmed $5.8 million was stolen but said that number could go significantly higher.

“This affected hundreds of families across Miami-Dade County,” the sheriff said. “Our hope is that there will be more arrests, the investigation continues. Like I said, $5.8 million is the dollar amount we have today, but we suspect that it is higher.”

Cordero-Stutz said the investigation isn’t over.

“Let me speak directly to everyone who lives in a condominium or an HOA community in Miami-Dade County. Your monthly association fees and special assessments are your hard-earned money.  You have every right to know where that money is going,” she said.

The woman had been asleep in her home in the 2900 block of Northeast 7th Street back on Aug. 16 when she woke up to a man touching her, Broward Sheriff’s Office officials said.

The man fled, and authorities launched an investigation and were able to identify a suspect, 27-year-old Stinley Jean Jacques, officials said.

On Wednesday, BSO detectives found Jean Jacques but he fled before he eventually crashed in North Miami, official said.

Jean Jacques was booked into a Miami-Dade jail on traffic charges but was expected to be brought to Broward to face charges including burglary, battery, stalking and voyeurism.

Officials said the investigation was ongoing.
