About Nine

We are nine.com.au the digital home of Channel Nine.

Our history

Our history in broadcast television is rich. John Godson introduced the station on 16 September 1956 out of its headquarters in Willoughby, a suburb located on the North Shore of Sydney, Australia, where the station still operates today.

Bruce Gyngell presented the first programme, This Is Television, becoming the first person to appear on Australian TV. Later that year in Melbourne, Nine commenced transmissions to broadcast the 1956 Summer Olympics.

In 1967, the New South Wales Rugby Football League grand final became the first football grand final of any code to be televised live in Australia.

By the 1970s, the Nine Network became the first television station to regularly screen programmes in colour.

In 1997, in partnership with Microsoft, Channel 9 launched ninemsn, one of the original and most widely used online platforms in Australia. In 2016 ninemsn became nine.com.au and today nine.com.au is one of Australia's leading websites for news, sport, lifestyle and entertainment.

Ninemsn history

In 1997, in partnership with Microsoft, Channel 9 launched ninemsn, one of the original and most widely used online platforms in Australia.

Microsoft sold its stake in the Ninemsn venture to Nine Entertainment in 2013, with the Ninemsn website rebranding to nine.com.au. Ninemsn's sub-brand sites were also rebranded to incorporate the Nine brand as 9Coach, 9Honey, 9Kitchen and more.

Today, nine.com.au is one of Australia's leading websites for news, sport, lifestyle and entertainment.
