What does Columbo have to do with Ace Attorney?
Columbo, the 1970s detective show starring Peter Falk, is having a bit of a resurgence right now. But did you know that was previously a huge hit in Japan? Columbo references show up in all kinds of anime like Detective Conan and Lupin the 3rd... and in games like Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. Detective Gumshoe is a pretty spot-on Columbo-alike, but how did this schlubby American detective get so popular in Japan, anyway? #Columbo #AceAttorney

Elden Ring does this better than anyone else
How much storytelling can you do with a few yards of cloth? If you're FromSoftware, a whole freaking lot! In Elden Ring and FromSoftware's ever-growing catalog of solemn sword adventures, there's an astounding amount of attention paid to cloth. The shape, the texture, the movement. But why? Polygon's resident man of the cloth Patrick is here to break it all down. #eldenring
Why horses are so hard for video games to get right
If a horse is in a video game, that means someone busted their butt to get it there. Horses are WEIRD — they're massive animals with weird bendy joints and many, many gaits. It's no wonder why so many games choose to simply treat them as transportation. Even so, some games go the extra mile to make horses unique and meaningful to the gameplay — and they benefit from it massively. Here's why horses are so difficult to get into games, and what we're missing out on when horses aren't given their due. #breathofthewild #eldenring
I hate dogs (in Elden Ring)
Elden Ring's dogs are some of the most annoying enemies for me to wrap my head around in a fight. Even hundreds of hours into the game, one tiny mistake in a fight against a dog threatens to send me spiraling into despair and lost runes. I wanted to figure out what it was about FromSoft's dog-type enemies that made them so obnoxious to fight. So I put away my weapons and put up my fists to every dog in the Lands Between — including the Monstrous Dogs and the Red Wolf of Radagon — until I figured out why dogs are a pain in my butt. #eldenring #gameplay
The mythic origins of Elden Ring’s spooky scary skeletons
Skeletons are a classic video game grunt, but what makes them so special? FromSoftware has mastered the bones of skeleton-making, and their expertise is on full display in Elden Ring. Adventurers have been ragging on skeletons since Gary Gygax co-created Dungeons and Dragons, but our relationship with skellies goes back much further, and Elden Ring draws on myths from all over the world to inspire its funniest (and most annoying) enemies. #eldenring #fromsoftware
FromSoftware fans should get excited for Armored Core
Have you heard the rumor that FromSoftware, makers of Elden Ring, are hard at work resurrecting ... ARMORED CORE? Wait, back up. Have you heard of Armored Core? Because it's a great, weird, classic, tough FromSoft series that spanned 17 entries! So, let Clayton Ashley catch you up on what the series is all about before Armored Core 6 maybe-possibly comes out. Someday. #armoredcore #darksouls
Elden Ring's weird little guys, explained
The new Elden Ring trailer is chock full of little weirdoes, hecked up guys, and nasty creatures. We use our expert knowledge of From Software's oeuvre to accurately predict who they are, and what their deal is. #eldenring
Elden Ring wants you to stop hitting yourself
Elden Ring is, yes, incredibly hard. But it's also very funny? Polygon's Jenna Stoeber explains how with Elden Ring, FromSoftware has mastered jokes and environmental humor, a style of storytelling where the punchline is almost always... You Died. #eldenring #funnymoments
Shelf Quest - Matthew Lillard
Matthew Lillard is a very busy man, but if he has some downtime you can find him kicking butt at FIFA. We met up with Lillard at videogamesnewyork ahead of the Scream 7 premiere, to take a walk through his gaming memories — from getting destroyed by Dragon's Lair at the arcades when he was a kid, to getting carried by his son in Apex Legends. He may not be good — and he'll be the first to tell you that! — but he's in it for the fun.
Max Burkholder - Shelf Quest Episode 2
Max Burkholder grew up with "unlimited screentime," as a busy child actor going to work and school. He fell in love with video games through Kingdom Hearts, which helped him come down from the stress of being on the set of films like The Purge, Daddy Day Care and Parenthood. Now he somehow finds time for games while starring as the teen version of Mark Wahlberg's character on Peacock's Ted series, ploughing through long RPGs like Final Fantasy 16 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, as well as playthroughs of critically acclaimed puzzlers like Blue Prince. He was excited to walk out of videogamesnewyork with a new copy of Bravely Default for the Nintendo Switch 2. This is Shelf Quest, our monthly series exploring gaming nostalgia, and how games have impacted our lives. We'll be back next month with a brand new guest, and more stories to tell.
Gaten Matarazzo | Shelf Quest Episode 3
Child actors either get unlimited screentime, or none at all. Gaten Matarazzo grew up in a household where everything from Call of Duty to Cartoon Network was forbidden, so he snuck video games where he could. That all started to change when he landed the role of Dustin Henderson on Netflix's megahit, Stranger Things. Gaten broadend his horizons with The Legend of Zelda, Spider-Man, and Uncharted. He reveals his underrated first Zelda game, as well as what he considers "the best video game experience that I've ever had." Now that Stranger Things wrapped, Gaten has been teeing up the next big thing. Pizza Movie (from directors Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney, also known the YouTube sketch comedy duo BriTANick), is his first film to be released since the finale of Stranger Things aired in December 2025. It's streaming now on Hulu and Disney Plus.
Shelf Quest episode 4: Matthew Kim
K-pop idol and actor Matthew Kim (or Big Matthew, as fans of the group KARD know him) moved to Korea to pursue a career in entertainment — but games keep him in touch with his family. His love of video games started with his father, who was "nasty" on Super Mario, and continues today when he plays Call of Duty: Warzone with his little brother.
Kenan and Kel and childhood | Shelf Quest
Back together and funnier than ever! Kenan and Kel are like kids in... well... a video game store in this episode of Shelf Quest! The iconic duo takes us on a nostalgia trip through the 80s and 90s, reminisce about gaming with Coolio in their sitcom era, learning to dance from Dance Dance Revolution, and sharing Castlevania and Sonic games with their kids. Plus, Kenan's gaming regrets and Kel's shopping spree through videogamesnewyork. Kenan and Kel are bringing the laughs, the memories, and the unmistakable chemistry that made them one of the most iconic comedy duos of a generation to an all-new episode of Shelf Quest and their new free-to-play match three game Orange Pop is available now on the App Store and Google Play.
Who put all these banjos in my sci-fi game?
Why have the recent crop of science fiction video games all sounded so... rustic? Do they have more in common than just a country-fried soundtrack?
