Princess Eugenie has become the latest member of the royal family to pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II by naming her first-born daughter in Her Majesty's honour, joining a proud royal tradition.
On 17th August, Princess Eugenie took to Instagram to reveal the name of her two-week-old daughter, confirming that she had chosen Elizabeth as a middle name.

It is a fitting legacy for a woman who had such a profound impact on Britain and the royal family.
In 1926, the future Queen Elizabeth II was born. Now remembered as an era-defining sovereign and the longest-reigning monarch in British history, at the time of her birth the eldest daughter of the Duke and Duchess of York was never destined for the throne.
Life changed in 1936 when her favourite uncle, King Edward VIII, abdicated in order to marry his divorced American lover, Wallis Simpson. With this unprecedented move, the Duke of York became King George VI and Princess Elizabeth the heir to the throne.

Elizabeth married Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark in 1947, marking the beginning of a union that would last more than 70 years until his death in 2021. The couple welcomed their two eldest children, Prince Charles (now King Charles III) and Princess Anne, before Elizabeth's life changed once again when her beloved father died in February 1952. The young Princess became Queen.

Born on 15 August 1950, Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise was the second child of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Her name pays tribute to both her mother and her paternal grandmother, Princess Alice of Battenberg. Officially styled the Princess Royal, Anne remains a devoted supporter of King and country and has regularly been hailed the ‘hardest working royal’.
Zara Tindall
Princess Anne gave her parents their two eldest grandchildren, Peter Mark Andrew Phillips (born 1977) and Zara Anne Elizabeth Phillips (1981). The children are the product of Anne's first marriage to Captain Mark Phillips (she is now married to Sir Timothy Laurence). Following convention, Zara's name pays tribute to both her mother Anne and grandmother Elizabeth. Zara married England rugby player Mike Tindall in 2011 just a few months after the wedding of her cousin Prince William to Kate Middleton. When Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson welcomed their first child together, a daughter born in August 1988, they made sure Queen Elizabeth II was acknowledged in her name. Beatrice Elizabeth Mary was a nod to both the baby's grandmother and great-grandmother, Mary of Teck. Princess Beatrice later paid tribute to her namesake in another meaningful way, wearing the Queen Mary Fringe Tiara for her wedding to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi on July 17, 2020.
Lady Louise Windsor

The daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, then Earl and Countess of Wessex, Lady Louise Windsor was born four weeks premature at Frimley Park Hospital, Surrey, following a dramatic series of events that made headlines. Prince Edward was on an official visit to Mauritius at the time. Lady Louise was given names after her great-grandmother, Princess Alice, as well as her paternal (Elizabeth) and maternal (Mary) grandmothers.

Born 29 March 2012, Isla Elizabeth Phillips is the younger daughter of Peter Phillips and his first wife, Autumn. She was the second of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's great-grandchildren, following her older sister, Savannah. Keeping it simple, Peter and Autumn decided to give their second-born child a single middle name: Elizabeth. The teenager has grown up largely out of the spotlight although she does join the royal family for some official engagements.
Princess Charlotte
The Prince and Princess of Wales (then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge) welcomed their daughter Princess Charlotte on 2 May 2015. Charlotte Elizabeth Diana was named after two of the most important women in Prince William's life: his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and his mother Diana, Princess of Wales. William and Catherine have spoken often of how they keep Diana's legacy alive for their three children. No doubt they do the same for their beloved ‘Gan-Gan’, as the Queen was affectionately known.
Lena Tindall
When it came to naming their daughter, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex decided that a middle name wasn't enough to honour Queen Elizabeth II. Instead their daughter, born on 4 June 2021, shortly after the death of Prince Philip, takes her name from Elizabeth's nickname, Lilibet. The moniker was used by the late Queen's parents. Prince Philip also reportedly used the nickname. Lilibet, who became a Princess on the ascension of her grandfather King Charles III, was given the middle name Diana after her paternal grandmother.
Sienna Mapelli Mozzi
Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi, daughter of Princess Elizabeth and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, was the final great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip born during Her Majesty's lifetime. Sienna arrived in September 2021, a year before the Queen's death in September 2022.
Adelaide Brooksbank
