Fixing systemic problems with Send funding and inclusion | Letters

Jan Shapiro calls for a searching examination of the assumptions and culture that shape practice across the Send system. Plus Mary Smith sets readers and journalists a challenge based on her granddaughter’s revision sheet

Your report highlights the impact of the inadequate funding of special educational needs and disabilities provision (Schools forced to cut back on support for Send pupils in England, poll finds, 23 April). However, this moment should prompt not just concern about diminishing support, but a more fundamental examination of the system that produces these pressures in the first place.

I lead a school with a significantly higher-than-average proportion of disadvantaged pupils with Send. For us, inclusion is not an add-on but a commitment embedded in relationships and practice. The issue is not solely financial. It is also about approach, language, culture and what schools are incentivised to value. Without that foundation, increased funding alone will not deliver what our Send children need.

My former colleague Paul Black, who has died aged 95, was an educationist known for playing a big part in developing the national curriculum for England, which was introduced in 1989 for primary and secondary schools.

As chair of the Task Group on Assessment and Testing, set up by the Conservative government, Paul convinced the then education secretary Kenneth Baker to adopt a set of compulsory subjects that would be assessed mainly by teachers, with external moderation, with expected attainment levels at the end of key stages. Once the system had been agreed, he became deputy chair of the National Curriculum Council from 1989 to 1991.

Serving up salad success at school dinners | Letters

Robin Jenkins reminisces about an experiment when he was a school dinner manager in London. Plus a letter from Paul Flowers

The government’s plan to ban unhealthy items from the school menu is what I call the killjoy option (‘No cheeseburgers … they would go bankrupt’: pupils reject plan to cut fatty foods from lunch menus, 17 April). It will only alienate headteachers and pupils alike, and it certainly does not encourage healthy eating.

When I was manager of school dinners in Hackney in 1985 we introduced self-service salad bars at the entrance to the canteens. The main opposition to this initiative came from headteachers who thought that it would be practically unfeasible and probably unpopular. In the primary and secondary schools where we managed to convince headteachers to have a go, the salad bars proved to be a great success. Pupils filled their plates with salad and had less room for the less healthy items. Examination of food waste at the end of the service indicated that the salad had mostly been eaten.

Exam-obsessed school system doesn’t make the grade | Letters

Readers respond to Alan Milburn’s finding that exam-focused schools are failing to prepare pupils for the real world

Alan Milburn is right to warn that an “exam-obsessed” school system is failing to prepare young people for adult life (‘Exam-obsessed’ schools leave pupils unready for work, Alan Milburn says, 20 April). The pendulum has swung too far from personal development towards a narrow fixation on measurable attainment. A broad educational purpose has been reduced to the accumulation of grades. This is not a failure of schools, but the product of an accountability system that overvalues what is easily measured. Attainment data is prioritised, while resilience, communication, collaboration and character are sidelined.

The result is a generation leaving education well qualified on paper but less able to apply those qualifications beyond school. This reflects decades of policymaking that has undervalued personal development, including the steady erosion of arts subjects that foster creativity and confidence. Young people have far more to offer than their exam certificates; policymakers’ fixation with the easily measurable is constraining schools from developing the interpersonal skills that matter most in an increasingly complex world.
Pete Crockett
Royal Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire
Continue reading...

I was wrong about the danger of smartphones in schools. It’s far, far worse than I thought | Lola Okolosie

The new ban in England should be welcomed. But teachers like me know that enforcement is time-consuming – and even, sometimes, dangerous

It seems unbelievable now, but a decade ago we were debating the potential merits of mobile phones in schools. Back then, some private school headteachers insisted these mini-computers were a “powerful resource” teachers should “harness” rather than fear. To counter what I can now only call a fantasy, in these pages I argued the opposite case. To introduce them into classrooms would widen the attainment gap between rich and poor students. It would also heap more pressure, I wrote, on children whose parents could not afford the eye-watering costs of the latest smartphone. Looking back, both the defence of phones in schools and my rebuttal of it appear painfully naive.

Phones have proved far worse than either side of the debate could have conceived. Schools know all too well the threat phones pose to pupils’ attention. But it’s more serious than just classroom disruption. Smartphones, and their symbiotic relationship with social media apps, have proved themselves the tobacco of our age. The government’s announcement on Monday that it would turn its existing guidance in England on phones in schools into a statutory ban sounds less like a bold intervention and more like a simple recognition of reality.

Former minister leading review into young people and work cites survey showing most teachers decry lack of ‘soft skills’

An “exam-obsessed” school system is leaving young people unprepared for work, Alan Milburn has said, as new polling suggests teachers believe pupils are leaving education without the skills they need for adult life.

Milburn, a former cabinet minister under Tony Blair and now leading a government-commissioned review into young people and work, said the system had become overly focused on academic sorting rather than real-world readiness.
