Scranton Half check presentation

Members of the Scranton Half Marathon gathered recently with representatives from each of Scranton’s Little Leagues and Tripp Park Little League Softball for a check presentation. A total of $35,882 was distributed among the seven organizations, with each receiving $5,126. The chicken barbecue committee of St. Carlo Acutis Parish at St. Patrick’s Church, Olyphant, gathered recently to finalize plans. The chicken BBQ will take place Sunday, Sept. 13, from 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. in the church parking lot on Delaware Street, Olyphant. The dinner, at $12, includes half a chicken, scalloped potatoes, green beans and dessert. There will also be a basket raffle, a bake sale, a cash raffle, children’s games and music by John Quinn. St. Carlo Acutis Parish chicken barbecue

Students from Western Wayne High School teamed up with the Wayne/Pike Farm Bureau to collect and donate nonperishable foods for the Farmers Care program. Students, Farmers Care aid food pantry

United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania received a $10,000 grant from the Hawk Family Foundation in support of its SCOLA program, helping expand educational opportunities for adult learners in the community. UNC’s SCOLA programming serves adult learners at varying literacy and English proficiency levels, providing foundational language skills paired with long-term goal setting through career exploration, education and training, and pathways into high-demand careers. Services are offered free with both in-person and virtual options, including group classes, one-on-one tutoring and access to technology for independent self-study. The Friends of the Scranton Public Library will hold a five-day book sale Sept. 15-19 at the Marketplace at Steamtown, on the second floor in front of Crunch Fitness. There will be thousands of children’s and adult fiction and nonfiction books, plus audio books, DVDs, CDs and jigsaw puzzles, with prices ranging from $1-2 (children’s books 25 cents-$1). The sale will be open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. On Saturday only, visitors can fill a Friends tote bag for $5. Also on Saturday only, as a community service, any teachers or people who work for nonprofits or those who have a free little library may take whatever they can use for free. All proceeds benefit the Scranton Public Library, including the free Sundays with Friends monthly events at the Children’s Library. These include the Turtle Show on Sept. 13 and P.T.
