South Florida doesn’t do winter. At least, not the frosty, scarf-necessary, hot-cocoa-as-survival-fuel kind. Which is why the return of real-ice skating to downtown West Palm Beach feels like a minor miracle powered by equal parts holiday spirit and serious refrigeration tech. Winter Wonderland is back at The Ben Hotel starting November 1, transforming the waterfront lawn into a glittering holiday playground with twinkling trees, Aspen-style chalets and, of course, a 50-by-66-foot rink made of the real stuff. Yes, ice. In Palm Beach. Again. Last year’s debut drew more than 30,000 skaters, proving locals are more than ready to trade sand for snowflakes, at least in theory. Around the rink, expect plenty of festive distractions: chalet vendors slinging gifts and sweets; a holiday bar for hot chocolate, s’mores, grown-up toddies and the debut of a Holiday Tree Forest created in partnership with local nonprofits, including Habitat for Humanity and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County. Broadway tickets can cost a small fortune, but at least they can now score you a free cocktail before curtain call. Langan’s, the recently revived Irish restaurant and bar in the Theater District, is pouring complimentary espresso martinis for theatergoers. To claim one, diners simply need to show a ticket for that evening’s Broadway performance. The offer is available at the new Langan’s at 114 West 47th Street, conveniently located near Times Square and a short walk from many Broadway theaters. The restaurant has promoted the drink as both an espresso martini and an Irish coffee martini, so expect a slightly Irish spin on the modern classic—but either way, it should provide enough caffeine to prevent any mid-show nodding off. New York City has lost plenty of beloved bookstores over the decades, but the Strand is still blessedly standing—and it is about to celebrate a very big birthday. The iconic independent bookstore will mark its 99th anniversary with Strand Day on Saturday, September 19. The day-long celebration will include bookish activities, storytimes and other special events planned throughout the day. New York City may be brutally expensive, but one local university apparently still offers enough academic bang for your very considerable buck. Columbia University has been named the eighth-best college in the country in TIME’s inaugural America’s Best Colleges of 2026-2027 ranking. The Morningside Heights institution finished just behind the University of Pennsylvania and one spot ahead of Claremont McKenna College. Harvard University rounded out the top 10. RECOMMENDED: This Brooklyn school was just ranked the best high school in all of New York City Stanford University claimed first place, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvey Mudd College, Princeton University, the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and the California Institute of Technology. To create the ranking, TIME partnered with the data research firm Statista to identify colleges that offer strong value for students. But rather than relying solely on academic reputation or exclusivity, the list evaluates schools across three broad categories: student outcomes, learning environment and attractiveness to prospective students. Columbia earned an overall score of 91.62 out of 100. Its strongest marks were in attractiveness, with a score of 99.33, and learning environment, with 95.17. New York's thrifting scene just got its flowers—and its receipts. Yelp dropped its list of the country's most saved spots for secondhand shopping and the five-borough sweep (okay, technically two boroughs) proves what closet-diggers here have known for years: we do secondhand better than almost anywhere. Five New York City shops made the national ranking, with two boutiques cracking the top three. Leading the local charge is L Train Vintage in the East Village, landing at #2. Loxfest, the bagels-and-smoked-salmon celebration that debuted last year, is returning to Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport on Saturday, September 19. Presented by FultonFishMarket.com, the online arm of the historic Fulton Fish Market, the one-day event will bring together a lineup of local restaurants and bagel makers for a spread of lox-centric bites. Confirmed participants include Casa Cugine, Peck Slip Social, 19 Cleveland, Paris Cafe and Greenberg’s Bagels, with more vendors still to be announced. Dunkin’ and American Express Gold will bring a free, tennis-themed pop-up called "Game, Set, Sip" to Vanderbilt Hall on Saturday, August 29, and Sunday, August 30, from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm each day. If you spent a July afternoon refreshing StreetEasy along with seemingly everyone else in the five boroughs, here’s some potentially rent-saving news: the best time to sign a New York lease is actually...December. That’s according to a new report from rental-alert platform RentReboot, which analyzed the listing histories of more than 820,000 New York City apartments. Looking at 68,531 units rented at least twice, the study found that leases signed in December were, on average, 4.2-percent cheaper than those signed in July for the very same apartment. On June’s citywide median asking rent of $3,800 for a one bedroom, that works out to roughly $160 less per month—or about $1,900 over a year. In a city where an “affordable” apartment can still demand a blood oath, that is not nothing. RentReboot pegs the broader bargain-hunting window as mid-October through mid-January. Fall is particularly good for negotiating: 31-percent of leases signed in November closed below the original asking price, versus just 15-percent in May. By December, landlords appear to have gotten the message themselves, and lower prices are more likely to be baked into the listing from the start. The reason is pretty straightforward. Bad news for anyone who had penciled in one last cannonball before summer’s unofficial finale: the Gottesman Pool at the Davis Center in Central Park is temporarily closed due to flooding. The popular public pool, which sits near the Harlem Meer at 106th Street, was initially listed as closed because of a “mechanical issue.” But the problem is more water than machinery. A spokesperson for NYC Parks told West Side Rag that flooding has taken one of the pool’s two main pumps and the adjacent splash pad offline. Central Park Conservancy and NYC Parks maintenance staff are working to dry the affected areas and get the pumps running again. The pool’s website now simply says that Gottesman Pool is closed and apologizes for the inconvenience. An earlier NYC Parks notice had suggested a reopening next Monday, but that date was later removed, so there is currently no official word on whether swimmers will be back in the water for Labor Day Weekend. After a four-year absence, Disney Cruise Line is bringing the Disney Wish back to New York City in fall 2027—meaning New Yorkers will once again be able to swap a cab to LaGuardia for a more magical route out of town. The Disney Wish, one of the cruise line’s newer ships, will sail from the city on seven special voyages beginning in late September 2027. The lineup includes four- to seven-night itineraries to Bermuda, as well as a fall foliage cruise through New England and Canada. Five of the sailings will head to Bermuda, home to pink-sand beaches, bright blue water and plenty of sunshine. Three of those trips will include an extra day on the island, giving passengers more time to explore beyond the vessel.
