In the words of Emily Ratajkowski: “Being a redhead is… a mood.” Of course, she’s not the only A-lister to dabble in the look, which has been experimented with by everyone from Ice Spice to Janet Jackson to Kendall Jenner and both Hadid sisters over the years.

Then there are the natural redheads – like British Vogue’s September cover star, Nicole Kidman, who shot to fame in the 1990s with a mane of tumbling strawberry blonde curls. She’s tried different shades over the course of her decades in the spotlight, but always eventually returns to a version of her signature red. (She told me last year that she likes to run any extra face oil through her hair, too. Waste not, want not!)

Red “communicates strength” master colourist Josh Wood notes, and when it comes to the hair, “the great thing with reds is that you can change the tone, so you can go from a cherry red to copper or a copper-gold red”.
