In news that feels approximately two decades late, but highly welcome nonetheless: How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days is finally getting a sequel. According to Variety, a follow-up to the widely beloved rom-com is currently in the works at Paramount, with original star Kate Hudson attached to produce the project. Producer Stacey Sher (who has an extensive list of credits, including Pulp Fiction, Reality Bites and Django Unchained) is also on board to produce alongside Hudson.
While there’s no official word yet on whether Hudson and Matthew McConaughey will return as the leads, it’s looking likely. Again, according to Variety, “The intention of the filmmakers and the studio is to have Hudson and her co-star from the original, Matthew McConaughey, reprise their roles.” And, look, if Hudson’s on board then surely McConaughey will follow – though much of the creative team and cast are yet to be ironed out.
If you need a refresher on the 2003 original, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days follows Andie Anderson (Hudson), a journalist for Composure magazine, who gets sent on an assignment (these Noughties rom-com characters were forever being sent on “assignments” – bring them back!) to see if she could date a man and then deliberately drive him away with classic dating mistakes. Benjamin Barry (McConaughey), the advertising executive she dates, has simultaneously made a bet with his boss that he can make any woman fall in love with him within 10 days – and, if he succeeds, he’ll get to lead a prestigious ad campaign. Shenanigans follow, and – if, for some insane reason, you’ve not seen the film – you can probably guess what happens next.
Though the film relies on a few archaic tropes, it is, for all intents and purposes, a near-perfect rom-com – partially because Hudson and McConaughey seemed to have genuine chemistry. What the plot of the sequel could possibly be remains to be seen (How To Divorce A Guy In 10 Days?!), but we’ll be lining up for the premiere regardless.
