What’s the most New York thing about you?
I will scream “Taxi!” day or night. I am the person who gets everyone’s taxi. I’ve been teaching my daughters how to get one and they’re like, “We can’t scream like that.” You have to!
Do you have a signature dish that you cook for friends or family?
People don’t seem to buy lamb chops for themselves, but a lot of people love them. I cook them a lot, probably once a week.
What’s been your biggest achievement?
I would share that with my husband [Matthew Broderick]: the family we’ve created together. My three children are good kids. We are happiest when we know we can be together, but sometimes I’m like, “I wish you’d given me that laundry sooner!”
Your most prized piece of vintage jewellery?
I have a pair of antique diamond earrings, set in black rhodium, from the turn of the century, which I borrowed from Fred Leighton many years ago. They’re big-deal earrings; I don’t wear them all the time. Initially, I used to borrow them from the brand, but one day when I was wearing them, I was told I didn’t have to give them back. I was stunned. Years passed and I learnt by accident that my husband had bought them for me and he had never wanted me to find out.

Your favourite theatre in London is…
The Savoy Theatre. That’s where Matthew and I worked for so many months, when we starred in Plaza Suite [in 2024]. We were made to feel so at home at the theatre, the hotel and the beautiful American Bar.
What’s a sure-fire way to get your day off to a good start?
A strong Nescafé coffee.
Name one interior trick to lift a room.
Tibetan red crystal incense.
What’s your party trick?
I’m not someone who does that. I’m happy to serve people, feed people, but I’m not a parlour trick person.
One shoe to live in?
One shoe! No! If you’re making me choose one, I’d say the Vivienne Westwood DIY Roman sandals that go high up your ankle, from the spring/summer 2009 Gold Label collection.
The restaurant you return to time and time again?
D’Chez Eux came to my attention by accident… It is a traditional French restaurant in the 7th arrondissement of Paris with beautiful chequered tablecloths and runners. They bring a roast chicken on a proper wooden cutting board. It’s perfect.
The most common misconception about you?
That I’m Carrie.
What would Carrie’s Substack be called?

Books, books, books. I buy, ask for and hold on to too many books.
