The following article contains spoilers for The Odyssey.
After the seven-time Oscar-winning success of Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan is back with his latest awards behemoth: The Odyssey, an almost-three-hour-long blockbuster adaptation of Homer’s epic starring everyone from Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway to Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong’o. Naturally, we were first in line to see the future Oscar contender – and left with countless questions. Here are the 34 currently keeping me awake at night.
- This sound design is amazing, but will it permanently damage my ears?
- Did everyone else know that Travis Scott was in this?
- Did Sinon really not know people were inside the Trojan horse?
- Am I a monster for not really caring about these dogs / not wanting so much doggy screen time?
- From the first Dune movie to this, why is Zendaya always playing characters seen in visions?
- Why are the residents of ancient Ithaca speaking in strong American accents?
- Why does Tom Holland keep saying “mom” like he’s in a ’90s sitcom?
- Why is the dialogue so expositional?
- Why is Odysseus so obsessed with lotus flowers?
- Why don’t we see more of the Trojan war?
- Can Christopher Nolan ever make a movie without back and forth time jumps?
- I feel like Christopher Nolan still hasn’t learned how to write women?
- Is that man speaking Greek?
- How could the Trojans not have realised there were people inside that horse?
- Lupita Nyong’o plays two characters but still doesn’t have enough screen time?
- I don’t really care about Menelaus and Telemachus’s little bird-shooting outing?
- Why does Polyphemus love his sheep so much?
- So, do all these islands have giants, then?
- Wow, Odysseus is a terrible leader?
- Why isn’t there an actual mutiny against him?
- Is Circe actually really relatable?
- Why is a chat with Odysseus enough for Circe to undo her magic?
- I want to know why she turned her sister into a bird?
- Could Odysseus be doing more rowing himself?
- Could this film have been, like, an hour shorter?
- Could the sirens scene have been a bit more interesting?
- Wasn’t there anything else to hunt on that island except for the cows?
- Why does Calypso love Odysseus?
- And why does she then let him go?
- Doesn’t Charlize Theron deserve more than this part?
- Why doesn’t Eumaeus immediately recognise Odysseus’s voice?
- Why doesn’t Telemachus have a bigger reaction to being reunited with his father?
- Why does the final fight scene go on for so long?
- Should I just be grateful that The Odyssey is at least more entertaining than Oppenheimer?
