Craig Mudge AO liked thisCraig Mudge AO liked thisOn Friday, 24 July, Kingston AI Group Chair and Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) Chief Scientist Professor Anton van den Hengel joined leaders from research, government, industry, and the union movement for a series of panel discussions at the AI and the Future Fringe Event during the 50th Australian Labor Party (ALP) National Conference, held at the Adelaide Convention Centre. The conversations explored what Australia needs to realise the full potential of AI, from building sovereign capability and improving productivity to supporting workers through technological change and translating research into real world impact. They also emphasised that achieving these outcomes will require thoughtful policy, investment in skills, and strong collaboration across research, industry, government, and the community. Professor van den Hengel joined an esteemed group of panellists including Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees' Association (SDA) National Secretary Gerard Dwyer, Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) Assistant Secretary Joseph Mitchell; Community & Public Sector Union (CPSU - PSU Group) National Secretary Melissa Donnelly; Electrical Trades Union of Australia (ETU) National Secretary Michael Wright; Senator Tony Sheldon; Tech Council of Australia CEO Dr Kate Cornick; Rozetta Institute CEO Dr Paul Dalby PhD GIA (Affiliated); Chifley Research Centre Executive Director Emma Dawson; and Assistant Minister for Science, Technology, and the Digital Economy, the Hon Dr Andrew Charlton MP. Craig Mudge AO liked thisCraig Mudge AO liked thisJust finished Eric Ries' new book, Incorruptible. It got me stuck on one question. Can you actually know in advance whether someone has the character to stay honest when it costs them something? Over my career, I've watched people fail that test more times than I'd like to admit. Three examples of many: Straight out of university, I joined a tech startup that went on to IPO. The founder-CEO was sharp, charismatic, everything you'd want backing a company. Years later, when a quarter was about to come in soft, his holding company sold roughly $20 million of stock days before the bad results went public. The securities regulator eventually charged him, and the holding company pleaded guilty to insider trading and paid a seven-figure fine. Later, I spent time at a hedge fund. The founder had the pedigree, the track record, the whole package. He also chased his 2-and-20 harder than he chased honest trading, and eventually fled the country. Last I checked, his Canadian back taxes equal the cost of a nice superyacht. A partner firm tied to him took financial hits in the fallout that they never recovered from. Honestly, what he did after the fund blew up could fill a 300-page book. Next to him, the Wolf of Wall Street looks like a cloistered choir boy. Most recently, a project I was part of brought in a new lead. They had attended great schools, had relevant experience, and independently wealthy. On paper, the least likely person to cut corners. The moment our token offering hit turbulence, their strategy was to use our angel investor's funds to buy our own token and manufacture the appearance of demand that wasn't there. The justification "this is how it's done in crypto." When the rest of the team pushed back, the response was "then I'm out." None of these people looked corruptible going in. Credentials, resume, references, even track records Yet none of it predicted what they'd do under pressure. If anything, their confidence and polish made it easier to miss. So I don't think character shows up on paper. It shows up at the moment someone can get away with something and others aren’t watching. This isn't academic for me. I invest in a fair number of early-stage startups now, and founder character is the whole bet. The business plan will change 10 times before it works, but who the founder is under pressure won't. None of these show up in a pitch deck, but they're what I watch for now. When someone's been wronged, do they own their part of it, or is it always someone else's fault? How do they treat people who have nothing to “offer them” – the social media intern, the support rep, a vendor they'll never need again? Do they tell you a number is soft before you catch it, or only after? None of these are reliable tests. But it's closer to the moment that matters than anything on a LinkedIn profile. Anyone figured out a better way to spot this in advance? I am genuinely curious. And read Incorruptible. It's excellent.

Delighted to have attended Wednesday's Hunter Nexus dinner, 'Manufacturing the Future: Investment, Industry & Energy in the Net Zero era', an evening of genuine connection & conversation shaping what's next for our region. Hearing directly from David Gall (CEO, National Reconstruction Fund Corporation) and Darren Miller (CEO, ARENA) was a genuine reminder of the scale of opportunity in front of our region right now. Government backed investment is flowing into manufacturing, energy, infrastructure and emerging industries, and the Hunter is positioned to be right at the centre of that shift to a lower carbon economy. A insightful panel conversation facilitated by the Universty's Laura Eadie optimised the conversation around commercialisation and industrial renewal. These are once in a generation opportunities, & they will not be realised on capital & innovation alone. They will be realised by people. A skilled, capable & future ready workforce is what turns investment into impact on the ground, and that will take a genuinely collaborative approach by the University, TAFE NSW and partners like HunterNet Co-operative & Regional Workforce Solutions working together, each bringing something different to the table to build the pipeline of talent &capability the Hunter needs. That is where I get to spend my days, & together with my passionate colleagues in Deborah Dawson & Sunnefa Hamar Penning we would love to be part of that conversation with your organisation. Delighted to be in the company of our Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, Professor Belinda Tynan, who hosted a table of valued industry guests on the night, including: Boris Novak, BE(ELEC) GAICD Todd Thornton Joshua Dawson Gail Cottrill Kim Liddell, GAICD & UON colleagues in Karen Blackmore Jessica Allen & Renee Smith. Craig Mudge AO liked thisCraig Mudge AO liked thisOne of the unexpected joys of my ANU listening tour has been reconnecting with people whose careers I've watched unfold over decades, like Professor Jodie Bradby, now Director of the Research School of Physics at The Australian National University. The first time we met, Jodie was a brilliant young postdoctoral researcher working with Jag (Professor Chennupati Jagadish, AC). She always seemed able to hear the hidden music of matter. Whether it was the standing-wave oscillations that make a semiconductor laser possible, or the quantum phase transformations in silicon under extreme conditions, Jodie had an extraordinary ability to uncover the fundamental physics that shapes our world. At the time, I was living in Silicon Valley when Jag & Jim (Emeritus Professor Jim Williams AO) reached out for advice on commercializing their semiconductor laser technology through a spin-out called Acton Lasers. Jodie was part of that remarkable ANU research environment and was already thinking beyond the laboratory. Her PhD research on silicon phase transformations ultimately led to an Intel-backed start-up, WRiota—an early example of Australian deep-tech research translating into global commercial impact. Today, Jodie holds the same leadership position that Jim held back then, continuing a tradition of world-class physics at ANU. Seeing that journey come full circle is a reminder that universities don't just produce papers—they produce people. The students, postdocs and early-career researchers we invest in today become tomorrow's scientific leaders, entrepreneurs and mentors. The returns on those investments are measured not just in citations, but in the people they become and the impact they have. It was wonderful to reconnect, reflect on how far we've travelled, and talk about where physics—and Australia—can go next. Great universities don't just discover the future—they grow the people who create it.

Australia has invested heavily in university research and innovation. However, persistent gaps remain between excellence and industrial adoption. While Australia has several strong Technology Transfer Offices, there is a case for embedded Technology Transfer Agents (TTAs) across the research system who can translate capability, shape demand, and guide new firms through to adoption. The absence of this capability can weaken intermediary models and limit the ambition of integrator-style approaches. Many valuable connections and re-connections at today’s CSIRO ON Translate event. Against a somber backdrop of continuing university challenges, especially in research translation and industry engagement, wise panelists Cathy Foley and Kate Cornick suggested paths forward: - The first significant steps in the research community to create our quantum industry, including the critical step of facilitating long-term learning relationships between researchers and potential users, were driven ‘bottom-up’ and happened without explicit government support and built the business case for further support - Our opportunity today is to redeploy the existing resources in our research innovation system to deliver more impact given today’s environment. This is the intent of Ambitious Australia at the national scale, and organisations like CSIRO are doing this already within their own ‘back yard,’ without waiting for government.
