Salam Khan posted thisEighteen years ago today, on 25 September 2008, the 25th of Ramadan (the fasting month) and the night of Jumuah (Friday), my dear father, Professor Muhammad Bukhsh Khan (Haji Baloch), left this temporary world and returned to his Creator. He was only 56. He was a professor, a homeopathic doctor, a poet, an imam, a Quran teacher, a loving father, and a very kind-hearted human being. Whatever I am today, after Allah's will and mercy, I am because of my father: his guidance, his teaching, his love, and the "maar" that kept me on the straight path, in this world and in my deen. May Allah grant him, my dear mother, and all the departed believers the highest place in al-Firdaus (the highest heaven), and keep us on the right path. Aameen. Love your parents and hold them close while you still can.

Salam Khan posted thisOver the weekend, I got to "unofficially" coach my 10-year-old's soccer team of 5 players who competed in a Champions League style football tournament against 5 other teams, and they ended up winning it and being the best team! No team had a coach, and it wasn't against the rules to go and coach one. In their first match, I saw two players who were the best at dribbling, two with great kicking power, and one at defending. All of them swarmed the ball and stayed next to each other, which made it hard for them to attack from all sides. They were in the wrong positions, playing for themselves. Hesitantly, I went out to them after the first game and asked if they had a minute and were willing to listen to my feedback. I started with: "You guys are all awesome and that was a great game, but are you willing to listen to some feedback? It'll help you perform even better." My son was over the moon, of course, and started saying, yes baba please. We want to win. The other kids got excited as well. I didn't tell them a million things, just a few. 1. You are not playing a one-man sport, you are playing a team sport, so support each other and pass the ball. 2. Don't swarm around the ball. Spread out and attack from the left, the right, and the centre. 3. You win or lose as a team, not as individuals, so trust each other and win or lose together. Your goals are two: have fun, and try to win by defending (not letting the other team score) and attacking (score goals) as much as you can. 4. Whoever kicks the ball the strongest, let them be the forward, and whoever is good at stopping the ball, let them be the goalie. Then rotate. 5. I unofficially made the bigger kid with leadership skills the captain and told him, these boys will listen to you, so guide them, lead them, and place them wherever you feel is suitable. Surprisingly, they were unstoppable after that! At work, teams and humans are similar. All we, as leaders, have to do is: 1. Take them from a one-person show to a team show 2. Show them what the goal is and what winning looks like 3. Help them understand their strengths and weaknesses (and continuously improve) 4. Give them clear roles and help them become great leaders 5. And lastly, tell them to have fun and communicate openly with each other When there is a will, there is always a way!

Salam Khan shared thisAs it's EOFY, spare a thought for the accountants. Right now they are the busiest and in-demand folks. Good on them., this season belongs to the tax folks. :) There is another EOFY obligation hiding in plain sight and almost nobody talks about it! If you run critical infrastructure in Australia, the financial year closing is your cue too. Under the SOCI Act, a responsible entity (RE) with a CIRMP owes an annual report once the FY ends (they get 90 days). They have until late September to lodge it, board sign-off and all. So while the accountants are buried, a quieter group is meant to be doing their own once-a-year scramble. The 'unglamorous stuff' that keeps the REs compliant. Just like the accountants, this seasons, SOCI people should be in demand too. And, if you're looking for one to help you comply with your CIRMP obligation - drop me a line :). #SOCI #CriticalInfrastructure #CIRMP #CyberSecurity #EOFY

Salam Khan shared thisThe PSPF, the ISM and the Essential Eight (E8) are three different Australian government cyber frameworks. I used to treat them as one. Then I learnt they are actually not three competing standards but they are the same goal at three different heights. -The PSPF is the policy umbrella. It sets the direction for protecting government people, information and assets. It says what must be done and why. -The ISM is the full control catalogue. Hundreds of specific controls. The technical detail of how. When the PSPF needs the cyber detail, it points to the ISM. -The Essential Eight is the short list you start with. Eight priority actions that block the most common attacks, carved straight out of the ISM. You do these first because they buy the most protection for the least effort. They stack. Policy on top, full rulebook underneath, short list pulled out of the rulebook. See the 'altitude idea' and the meetings get a lot less confusing. Salam Khan shared thisI have spent most of my career managing risk on delivering projects and products. RAID logs, risk registers, "the risks" in/on a pack, in a confluence, in Jira... different names, same job. So when I built a security risk assessment and register for Cirmp AI, the SOCI Act compliance tool I am building, I expected it to feel unfamiliar. It was not. Same shape I had used for years. List what could go wrong, rate likelihood against impact, treat it, give it an owner, review it. What is different is who you are up against and what is at stake. In delivery, the risk is scope, schedule, a vendor who slips. In security, there is usually a person deliberately trying to make it happen. The frameworks are more formal (ISO 27005, NIST, the ISM), likelihood leans on real threat information instead of a hunch, and the impact can be a data breach, a clinical system offline, a board signature on the line. As I've been reading about ISO 27005, NIST, and ISM, I reckon the discipline of actually reviewing it matters more than the frameworks. I have written it up properly, with a blank template in a public repo you can use. Link in the comments. #RiskManagement #SystemSecurityPlan #GRC #CyberSecurity

Salam Khan shared thisThere is something my many years in Delivery and Coaching taught me and it has stuck with me more than any framework or certification. Even mature-looking organisations and teams, the ones that look like they have everything sorted, do not just forget the basics, they practice anti-patterns on a daily basis. And because everyone around them does the same, it slowly becomes the new normal. Nobody flags it, because it all looks normal. Then the problems grow too big to ignore, someone finally runs a root cause analysis, and almost every time it traces back to the same place: corrupted foundational practices. The basics that were skipped, bent, or never properly understood in the first place. That is why, whenever I pick up something new, I go to the 'theoretical roots and basics' first and learn the basics before I touch the clever stuff. It is slower at the start, and that's okay, it'll help in the long run. Cyber security is no different. Before the tools, the frameworks and the audits, there are a few basics that everything else rests on. I've read many articles/books and watched many videos but still specially like these basic 6 Cyber security principles written by the Australian Cyber government department. If you are learning cyber security today, or making your organisation Cyber-safe, start here. I've put the six into a simple, plain-English slider below. Govern, Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, Recover. The foundations the rest of it sits on. #CyberSecurity #ACSC #ASD

Salam Khan shared thisBased on my last few weeks' discussion with Cyber and GRC folks, a lot of Responsible Entities (REs), and a lot of the consulting firms advising them, still haven't built AI-enhanced specialist tool/engine for SOCI's Cirmp compliance. (I'm happy to be proven wrong. And, if you know about it, please reach out.) And because it's compliance, nobody really likes it. It's not attractive. It's a forced thing, the kind of work that sits at the bottom of everyone's list until 'big brother' asks for it. So it gets outsourced. The risk goes to the Big 4 or a tier 2 firm, who turn up around June, gather all the information, and build the annual report manually or semi-automatically inside the 90-day window. The board approves it, the Responsible Entity submits it to the Cyber and Infrastructure Security Centre at the Department of Home Affairs, by 28 September. Done for another year. You can outsource the work. You can't outsource the accountability. The board still approves the report, and the obligation stays with the Responsible Entity either way. And it's messy, because most aren't compiling this on an ongoing basis (Again, I'm happy to be proven wrong). It's a scramble once a year, not a living program. (It gets messier when one entity carries more than one CIRMP, since a program attaches to the responsible entity by asset class, not the building, so assets in different classes each carry their own obligation. More on that in my earlier post.) I've been thinking - what if compliance wasn't boring? What if it didn't cost the same six-figure consultancy bill year after year? That's part of what I'm building toward at cirmpai.au. If you've been through a CIRMP submission, inside a Responsible Entity or advising one, I'd love to hear how you handle it. Is it a once-a-year scramble for you too, or have you found a way to make it continuous? #Cybersecurity #SOCI #GRC #CIRMP

Salam Khan shared thisSince the last SOCI post, I've been reading the four hazard categories every Responsible Entity (RE) has to address under CIRMP. Cyber, personnel, physical, and supply chain. They're listed plainly in the CIRMP Rules 2023 (LIN 23/006 if you want the proper instrument name), under s.30AH of the Act. I thought supply chain meant our IT vendors. The usual suspects. Snowflake, Okta, AWS, the SaaS list. Or the consulting companies, the big 4 and so on. But, it's way more than that. Here's an actual example: I fed my AI engine the same hospital from last time and asked it to map the supply chain hazard. It came back with the catering contractor. The pathology service. The medical device firmware vendor. The generator service company. The cleaners with after-hours badge access. AND the IT vendors. Same hospital, much wider attack surface. Wow! Supply chain under CIRMP isn't your cyber/IT procurement list. It's anyone whose failure could break the availability or integrity of the critical asset. The cleaner with badge access == Okta. The generator service company == AWS!!! So I changed the question I was asking the engine. I'd been asking "show me the vendor list". Now I ask "who has access to the asset, who provides essential goods or services, and who would break us if they broke?" Different question, completely different answer. Every layer of CIRMP I touch, I find I'd been asking the wrong question :). Has anyone in my network done a supply chain scoping pass under CIRMP? As a Responsible Entity or advising one. Let's chat. #Cybersecurity #SOCI #CIRMP #GRC

Salam Khan shared thisIn the last two months, I've been studying the Security of Critical Infrastructure (SOCI) Act. I thought one Responsible Entity (a company) sits in one sector (in my mind, I had this 1:1 mapping). WRONG. The SOCI Act doesn't put a company in 'a sector'. It puts each asset a company operates in a sector, and only if that asset crosses a threshold under the Definitions Rules 2021 (LIN 21/039 if you want the proper instrument name). There are 22 named asset classes across the 11 sectors. Each one has its own definition. A critical electricity asset, a critical data storage or processing asset, a critical hospital, and so on. An actual example: a hospital is a hospital, but it may also have a sizeable data centre (some of the big Australian hospitals do). So this hospital sits in the healthcare sector for its clinical activities, but the data centre, if it meets the threshold under the Definitions Rules, also falls within the data storage or processing sector! Same legal entity, two sectors, two Critical Infrastructure Risk Management Program (CIRMP) obligations under s.30AC, both carried by the Group CISO. Wow! The same goes for universities, yes! A research data store at the right scale, and you're in higher education AND data storage or processing at the same time. I worked this one out the hard and slow way, trying to code the scoping logic into a little rule engine (mostly to test whether I actually understood the Rules or just thought I did :)). I'd hardcoded the first question as "What sector are we in?" Then I fed it the asset list of a real Australian hospital. It came back with two sectors. The engine was right. My question was wrong :). So the question to ask isn't "what sector are we in" at all. It's "what assets do we operate, and which of those cross a threshold under the Definitions Rules?" Change that opening question, and the whole scoping conversation after it will look completely different. Has anyone in my Aussie network been through CIRMP scoping (either within a regulated entity or advising one)? I'd love to chat. Thanks! #Cybersecurity #SOCI #CIRMP #GRC

Salam Khan reacted on thisSalam Khan reacted on thisMy father once told me: “If people are making things difficult for you, do not give them the satisfaction of seeing you diminished. Dress with care, speak with eloquence and carry yourself so they know their actions cannot bring you down. Stay brave.” At the time, I took it as advice for a difficult situation. Today, I see it as a reflection of how he lived. My father, Syed Misbah ul Islam Rizwe, affectionately known in the family as Tayyab Pasha, passed away on 21 September 2026. He was 78. I lost my father and the person whose outlook quietly shaped much of my own. He was a man of dignity, modesty and perseverance. He neither diminished himself before authority nor became discourteous in asserting himself. Much of what I know of professional courage, measured communication and respect without submission came from watching him. Born to Najib-ut-Tarafain parents, with Sayyed lineage on both sides, he saw heritage as a duty to live with character and remain worthy of those who came before. He often spoke of his grandfather, Mir Syed Shakir Ali Sahib, and Shakir Sahib’s elder brother, Mir Syed Zakir Ali Sahib, after whom I was named. Although Zakir Ali Sahib was a frontline Pakistan Movement leader and an MLA, the story my father returned to was personal: even in old age, Shakir Ali Sahib would rise when his elder brother entered the room. For him, heritage was respect made visible through conduct. He carried the same dignity into his professional life. He served the Allied Bank Limited, across Banking operations, Maintenance and revolutionized Training as the Management and Establishment division. Even when he chose to leave a few years before retirement, he did not retire from contributing. He served as a management consultant at Aligarh Institute of Technology and Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology (SSUET), and taught Banking, Finance, Ethics, Leadership, and Human Resource subjects till June this year at Karachi University Business School (KUBS). His colleagues and students knew the same man we knew at home: composed, thoughtful, generous with his knowledge and mindful of others’ dignity. He defined naiki, or goodness, simply: 'Kisi ka bura na chahna', to wish no ill upon anyone. Believing in family & togetherness, he taught us that relationships do not sustain themselves; YOU must value them, protect them and bring people back to one another. In his absence, I realise how much of our togetherness rested upon his presence. I will miss his counsel and prayers, but I remain surrounded by what he placed within me: the resolve to stand with dignity, speak with courage, wish no ill upon others and protect the relationships that give life meaning. May Allah accept the goodness he spread, forgive his shortcomings and grant him the highest place in Jannat-ul-Firdous. Ameen. Jawwad Ali Amjad Rizvi

It's the book I wrote together with Christiaan Verwijs and Johannes Schartau. Because we closed our webshop and I stopped providing Scrum.org training and other Scrum workshops, these books will likely never find a new home. So... what to do... 🤷♀️ I stopped at Scrum.org cold turkey. Soon, other activities swarmed my calendar, and I moved forward with ColuminityScrum.org training and other Scrum workshops, these books will likely never find a new home. So... what to do... 🤷♀️ I stopped at Scrum.org cold turkey. Soon, other activities swarmed my calendar, and I moved forward with Columinity, Liberating Structures, and other facilitation engagements. Weirdly enough, we only hosted Zombie Scrum workshops *before* we launched the book in 2020. Afterward, COVID-19 happened, and we *never* hosted another workshop focused on Zombie Scrum. So, consider it a personal opportunity for closure, but on October 23, we'll run a first (since the book launch) and also final Zombie Scrum meetup. During this meetup, we'll explore Scrum's current state together. Is Scrum still relevant? Where is it thriving? Where is it struggling, and has it turned into Zombie Scrum? And if you're still using Scrum today, what do you believe its future should look like? This won't be a Scrum-bashing session or a place to complain about frameworks. Instead, we'll use Liberating Structures to exchange experiences, challenge assumptions, and share ideas for moving forward. As a small token of appreciation, all participants will get a free copy of our book. Already got a copy? You still get it! Don't want it? I'll make sure it's in your backpack anyway. 21 people have already signed up, so it's also a great networking opportunity! See you there? 😃 Sign up via Eventbrite (search The Liberators + Eventbrite).

Last night we launched The Goldilocks Zone in the city that shaped it, surrounded by people who shaped my career. Colleagues from every chapter of the journey, some going back sixteen years, all in one room. I loved every minute of it! ❤️ Standing beside Craig Kimball and hearing him talk about our five years of writing, arguing and rewriting reminded me why this book has two names on the cover. It could not have been written any other way. A special thank you to Craig Brown and the team at EverestEngineering for hosting us so generously. And to everyone who came, grabbed a copy, had it signed, and pulled us into conversations that ran well past our slot. I also want to thank the many, many people who sent private messages, before, during and after the night, and those who had planned to come but were pulled away at the last minute. You were missed, and you were felt in the room all the same. Sincerely grateful to every one of you.
