The Cliff Spring Fire burning below the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park has not grown in size over the past week, according to an update from park officials on Thursday, July 9.
Containment on the Pocket Fire has increased to 73%, as of the latest daily update from the incident management team on Friday.
In a statement released Thursday morning, Mayor Don Dent said the city “does not take the decision to hold fireworks lightly” but also “will not allow this celebration to be defined by misunderstanding or negativity.”
Stage 2 fire restrictions begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, June 30.
On Saturday, multiple spot fires jumped the road and consolidated, creating a tongue-like extension that stretched several miles to the north, adding 3,200 acres to the blaze on Saturday alone.
Red Flag Warning conditions are still in the forecast through Sunday, per the National Weather Service, with high temperatures in the upper 70s and wins between 18 and 31 mph, and gusts up to 49 mph.
