EV Road Tax in Malaysia: What Changed in 2026?

Malaysia's EV road tax exemption ended on 31 December 2025. From 1 January 2026, EV road tax is calculated using electric motor power in kilowatts (kW), rather than engine capacity in cubic centimetres (cc).

Why the new rates are lower

~85%

lower on average
Compared with the previous EV LKM rates, not petrol or diesel road tax.Source: JPJ's EV LKM rate guide
The 2026 EV rates are substantially lower than the earlier EV LKM schedule, especially for higher-powered vehicles. This comparison is against the previous EV road-tax schedule, not against petrol or diesel road tax.
The Ministry of Transport (MOT) says the rates will be reviewed at least once every five years.

EVs covered by this calculator

This calculator is for vehicles powered entirely by an electric motor. For these vehicles, road tax is based on the motor's power output in kilowatts (kW), rather than engine capacity in cubic centimetres (cc).

Frequently asked questions

EV road tax starts from RM 20 per year and increases according to the vehicle's electric motor output. The exact amount depends on the registered motor power in kW.

A vehicle with exactly 150 kW of motor output has an annual road tax of RM 160 under the 2026 schedule.

kW. Road tax uses electric motor power. Battery capacity in kWh is not used.

Check your Vehicle Ownership Certificate (VOC / geran), particularly the registered motor-power information under "Keupayaan Enjin".

Some EV models have multiple variants with different motor outputs. The model selector provides an estimate using a representative motor output. For the exact calculation, use the kW registered on your VOC.

No. The EV road-tax exemption ended on 31 December 2025. The new rates took effect on 1 January 2026.

The 2026 EV road tax schedule for vehicles other than motorcycles is based on electric motor power, rather than a separate sedan/SUV rate table.

The amended 2026 schedules use the same motor-power fees for the relevant EV category in West Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.

No. The new EV road tax structure specifically covers battery-electric and fuel-cell electric vehicles. Use the regular road tax calculator for a hybrid or PHEV.

Yes. JPJ requires the vehicle to have insurance covering the LKM period being renewed.
