What does BJAK handle after I buy insurance?
BJAK handles everything administrative around your policy. Your insurer handles the policy itself. That is the line, and it holds for the whole life of the cover. Documents, road tax, renewal reminders and chasing a slow claim sit with BJAK. Underwriting, assessing a claim and paying it sit with the licensed insurer or takaful operator whose name is on your certificate. Knowing which side a question falls on saves you calling the wrong number on a bad day.
Key facts at a glance
| Who issues your policy | Who decides and pays claims | What BJAK's role is | Where your documents live |
|---|---|---|---|
| The licensed insurer or takaful operator you selected | The same insurer or operator | Approved Financial Adviser regulated by Bank Negara Malaysia, and a JPJ authorised road tax agent | Your BJAK account, per vehicle |
What happens immediately after payment
Your cover note or e-policy is issued once payment clears. It lands in your BJAK account rather than in an email you will lose track of by next renewal. If you bought road tax in the same transaction, the renewal is submitted to JPJ off the back of the active cover, and the digital record appears in MyJPJ. There is no sticker to wait for as JPJ stopped printing road tax slips for Malaysian-owned private vehicles on 1 February 2026.
Both halves of that only work because of two licences. BJAK is an Approved Financial Adviser and Approved Islamic Financial Adviser regulated by Bank Negara Malaysia, which is what permits the insurance side, and a JPJ authorised road tax agent, which is what permits the road tax side. You can verify any insurer or takaful operator on the panel against Bank Negara's list of licensed insurers and takaful operators.
What BJAK keeps doing after the sale
- Holds your documents. Policy, cover note and road tax records stay in your account for every vehicle you own, so you are not digging through last year's email at renewal time.
- Sends renewal reminders per vehicle. Each car and motorcycle gets its own reminder before expiry. This matters more than it sounds if you run two or three vehicles on different dates, since insurance in Malaysia is written per vehicle and there is no combined household policy.
- Coordinates claims. The insurer assesses and pays, but if a file stalls, BJAK can chase it with them on your behalf. What that covers is set out on the trust page.
- Provides member roadside benefits. Towing and assistance benefits available to members are listed under member benefits.
- Processes refunds and cancellations under the published refund policy.
- Keeps your NCD visible. Your discount is pulled automatically at quote time, and you can check it any time with the NCD checker.
What only your insurer can do
This is the half people most often misattribute, so it is worth being blunt about it.
| Decision | Who makes it |
|---|---|
| Whether to accept the risk and on what terms | The insurer or takaful operator |
| The base premium and every add-on rate | The insurer. Since 2017 liberalisation, each one prices independently |
| The excess | The insurer, as set out in its Product Disclosure Sheet |
| Appointing the adjuster and approving repairs | The insurer |
| Whether a claim is paid, reduced or declined | The insurer |
| The panel workshop network available to you | The insurer |
Betterment is the one thing on this list that is not the insurer's choice. The scale is standard across the market and set out in Bank Negara's Policy Document on Claims Settlement Practices: 15% of the cost of new parts at five years, rising to 40% at ten years and above. Your insurer applies it; it does not set it.
BJAK does not underwrite, does not issue any policy, and does not decide claims. It compares and distributes, and it does the administration around the product. Being clear about that is more useful to you than a vaguer promise would be.
If a claim goes wrong
Ask for the reason in writing and ask which clause of the policy it rests on. That single request often resolves the matter, because it forces the decision to be justified against the wording rather than a phone call.
If you still disagree, the escalation path is the insurer's own complaints unit first. If that does not resolve it, take the case to the Financial Markets Ombudsman Service (FMOS), which handles motor insurance disputes at no cost to the consumer, covers disputes up to RM250,000, and must be filed within six months of the insurer's final decision. An FMOS decision binds the insurer once you accept it, and you keep your right to go to court if you do not. Your insurer is required to tell you about this route when it conveys a final decision or declines a claim, so check the letter. Where you bought the policy through BJAK, the claims team can chase the file alongside you.
Renewing next year
You can renew up to two months before expiry and keep the same NCD, which is worth doing if your renewal date falls during the monsoon or while you are away. Everything is on the renewal page, and road tax can go through the same checkout via the road tax renewal page. Renewal is the natural moment to add special perils or windscreen cover if you did not take them before. What you cannot do is add cover for something that has already happened, so decide before the monsoon rather than during it.
Frequently asked questions
Who do I call first after an accident?
Your insurer, using the claims line on your e-policy. Standard Malaysian motor policies require notification within seven days of the incident, or thirty days if you were hospitalised or physically disabled as a result. Lodge a police report within 24 hours as well, which is required under section 52(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987 where anyone was injured or another person's property was damaged. BJAK can help chase the file afterwards, but the insurer opens and assesses it.
Where is my policy document?
In your BJAK account, under the vehicle it belongs to. It is issued as soon as payment clears.
Does buying through BJAK change my cover or my claim rights?
No. The certificate comes from the insurer and the terms are the insurer's terms. The distribution channel does not alter what you are covered for.
Can BJAK overturn a declined claim?
No. Nobody in distribution can. The insurer decides, and the independent escalation route is the Financial Markets Ombudsman Service, free to consumers and open for six months from the insurer's final decision.
Will I be reminded before my road tax expires?
Yes, per vehicle, before the expiry date.
Is there a fee for the help after purchase?
Administration around your policy is part of the service. Pricing and any fees are set out at checkout, and refunds follow the published refund policy.
