Dana DiTomaso shared thisHow long do you spend planning a dashboard before you build anything? For me it used to be the slowest part of the whole job. Not the calculated fields, not the data connections, but sitting there with a blank page working out what this particular client actually needs to see. And then doing it again from scratch for the next client, even though my thinking hadn't changed. So I built a Claude project that knows how I approach reporting, and it now writes the planning doc for me. Not the dashboard, to be clear! It builds the spec, including what questions it answers, how it's structured, which chart types, and which calculated fields. In this week's newsletter I walk through what actually goes into that prompt, including some quick questions you can ask to get very useful information for your own dashboard build. I also cover what to check before you put any client material into an AI tool, because "my agreement probably allows this" is not the same as asking. The output still needs a human review. But starting from a draft instead of nothing saves hours. (Seriously.) #Analytics #DataStudio #DigitalMarketing

Thanks Frederick!Dana DiTomaso shared thisIf nothing changes, our model estimates that the median affected campaign could lose about 9% of its conversions or comparable conversion value at the same budget after Google’s August 17 bidding update. The exposure varies widely. At the 90th percentile in our sample, the modeled loss is 56%. Meanwhile, 38% of qualifying campaigns are already performing at or worse than their stated target, so our model estimates no loss from this specific target-alignment effect. These are scenario estimates, not observed post-change results. They assume performance moves fully to the stated target while budget remains unchanged. The analysis covers 1,943 budget-limited tCPA and tROAS campaigns with at least 30 conversions from July 1–August 10, 2026; it does not represent every Google Ads campaign. Review your budget-limited tCPA and tROAS campaigns before August 17 and decide whether the current target still reflects your business goal. Then after Aug 17, watch CPC and conversion rate together, and check your search terms. Those are where the two most likely mechanisms would show up: paying more for the same traffic, or buying different traffic.

Dana DiTomaso shared thisWhen someone knows what they're doing with AI, their workflows can look like magic! Which means that people can start thinking "oh, the AI did that, I can do that with AI too!" What actually happened was that the person built the workflow with their brain and the AI did the implementation of the instructions. The output was good because the person who built it is an expert. And even with great instruction sets, the best AI systems can go awry. Brittany Zerr wrote this one for anyone currently weighing whether to fire their ads agency and hand the login to an AI agent. I really like the example she included from Jyll Saskin Gales, where Claude recommended a bidding strategy change on logic that was technically sound, except conversion volume was too low to support it and values weren't syncing from the CRM so the budget ended up spiralling. Whoops! That's why that 10 minute audit probably isn't going to get the job done, you'll just get wrong answers faster than ever before! #GoogleAds #AI #DigitalMarketing

Dana DiTomaso shared thisWhat a fun announcement from Anthropic today! 🙃 I see some GAME OVER type posts, is that true? Will this reduce the massive volume of AI slop that we see from this platform and many others on a daily basis? Of course not. Will we have a way to say "this was definitely AI-written!"? Probably not. (I want to sidebar and say that actual detection is not available yet. Anthropic needs to release documentation to explain what the watermark is doing, or else you can't "see" it. So anyone selling a Claude watermark detection product today is making it up.) What if you, like me, use Claude to proofread your work? Or use Claude to take a stream of consciousness wall of text and turn it into something that other people can understand? The text that you get from that will have this mark saying that the text was processed by Claude. If you then rewrite it heavily, maybe the mark will be gone, or maybe not, it all depends on what you edit. Should Claude do that when it's performing minor grammar edits? My instinct is no because the idea is still me. The fact that I used Claude to help me with my terrible sentence structure shouldn't "taint" my text with the watermark. Because even though the announcement itself said "A detected mark provides a signal that content was processed by Claude, but is not fully conclusive", that won't matter, if someone sees that Claude touched that text at any point, it'll be suspect. I can't wait to argue with people about my content in the future!

Dana DiTomaso liked thisWhen I started collaborating with Stape on a content series about the business and commercial side of server-side, we talked about how we define new vs. existing customers, how non-lucrative is to look at data across platforms and expect it to be 1:1, offline sales data, the customer journey, the funnel, what data can we use in the end to make decisions, and it's only right that for the final (for now) article of our series is to talk about where is web analytics heading, and why, IMO, is brand measurement. In the latest edition of Beyond the Mean Newsletter I'm talking about how all of us in web analytics are perfectly fit to solve an open problem like brand measurement. The bottom of the funnel is measured to death, the top is a blur of search, AI answers, social, communities and recommendations. But, if you look at what is actually sitting in that blur, it’s how people discover you, compare you, and decide you’re worth bothering with. And that my friends… is brand. And were I think we should all look at next.
