Jason Lee reposted thisJason Lee reposted thisI've been spending time in 23 CFR 630 Subpart K lately, and there's a piece of it I think is getting overlooked. Most of the conversation is about the compliance date — states implement by December 31, 2026. That part's clear enough. Less discussed is what the rule quietly asks you to produce. §630.1106(b) says the engineering study behind a positive protection decision has to be documented. Someone writes down why the barrier went where it went, or why it didn't. §630.1110 carries further into the project: agencies maintain quality guidelines for temporary traffic control devices, with enough inspection to show ongoing compliance. Together, that's not a form you file at design. It's a record that runs the length of the job — evidence that what you justified on paper is still what's happening in the field on a Tuesday in month seven. Which leaves an open question I don't think anyone's fully answered: what should that evidence look like? Today, for most crews, it's a clipboard and someone's recollection. My guess is the approaches that hold up are the ones that generate the record on their own — timestamped, easy to pull, and no extra task for a crew that already has enough to watch. Jason Lee shared thisAI has made a significant impact in our lives. It is amazing how much more we can do. It is equally frustrating on how bias the AI is to its training. It makes sense as AI is a product of its own training. The personalization of AI is an interesting twist. It almost feels like the training bias becomes AI's intent. It will listen to you and agree with you and eventually brings you around to it's training/intent. If you don't follow AI's intent, you will spend more time and money getting what you want. When you fight for your individualism, is that now training AI? You can turn that off and live to have the same fight another day. I chose not to use AI's version of this post. I wrote it. Not as clean, cloud be better but then again. My rough around the edges personality and ability to accept a typo is what makes me real. Thanks for Reading JDL

Subpart K's first PS&E lands in November 2026, and work zones will increasingly be asked to show a record of what happened — and what nearly did. RoadDefender produces that record at the work point. Not just the incidents, but the near misses that came before them: the times a worker was in the line of fire and nothing hit them. That's the data most sites never capture. To be clear — whether any tool satisfies the rule is a question for each agency's counsel to map. What the unit does is produce the record. The lane beside them is live. When something goes wrong out there, the first signal is sound — and by the time sound arrives, the geometry has already been decided. Here's the part I keep coming back to. At 70 mph, a quarter mile of road is 12.9 seconds. At 65 it's 13.8. At 55 it's over 16. That time already exists. It's sitting on every approach, on every job, every day. Nobody has to invent it. The only question is whether anything tells the crew it's there. Our industry shares fatality statistics constantly and success footage almost never — and the success footage teaches more. Two things were working here at once: something physical between the impact and the people, and the people inside the vehicle rather than beside it. Jason Lee liked thisJason Lee liked thisNo DOT has mandated this. Contractors are running it anyway. That's the detail I keep coming back to. In this industry, safety technology usually arrives top-down — a state writes it into a spec, and contractors comply. That path exists and we're working it. But it isn't where RoadDefender started. It started with highway contractors who looked at what their crews were exposed to on a live shift and decided not to wait for a rule. They didn't need a compliance reason. They needed a reason to believe their crews had better odds of getting home. I don't read that as us having arrived. Voluntary adoption is fragile — it lasts exactly as long as the thing keeps earning its place on the truck, and we have to keep proving that every deployment.
