Daniel Tisch, ICD.D shared thisAs Ontario and Canada provide relief to businesses affected by illegal U.S. tariffs, we are in a strong fiscal position relative to other major economies. However, as this chart from the C.D. Howe Institute shows, we must be careful not to return to the unsustainable debt levels of the past. That's why the Ontario Chamber of Commerce argues that Canada's economic policy focus must be firmly on catalyzing private-sector investment, and on building the long-term infrastructure we need to diversify our economy and trade. Daniel Tisch, ICD.D reposted thisHere is an illuminating post from Oxford University engineering professor Dr. Jan Rosenow on the sales of EVs (electric vehicles). He points out that EV sales have accelerated to a remarkable degree in the last few years. Numerous countries have either banned IC engine vehicle sales or plan to do so soon. The key point is: don’t predict EV sales on the basis of what you see on the roads today. The average car on North American roads is about 11 years old - today. However, global new car sales are swinging strongly toward electric vehicles. So, while it will take many years to see a really big change on the roads, the shift to EVs has begun and will inexorably continue. The other point is that the US is waaay out of step with the rest of the world with the anti-EV stance of the current administration. This will limit the competitiveness of North America-only car brands- regardless of tariffs. Finally, the big battery plant investments made by Canada and Ontario in Windsor, London and elsewhere, and the plans for critical mineral mining in our country will pay off - count on it.Daniel Tisch, ICD.D reposted thisNEW BRIGHT SPOTS: The people who ran the car industry did not see this coming. In 2015, the former CEO of Daimler dismissed Tesla as a joke. Not a serious company. An enterprise that would never take off. This wasn't an outlier view. It was the prevailing wisdom in an industry that had spent more than a century perfecting the internal combustion engine. Reality proved them wrong. Within a few years Tesla was the world's most valuable carmaker. In 2023 the Model Y became Europe's best-selling car, the first battery electric vehicle ever to do so. Look at the numbers. In 2015, 330,000 fully electric cars were sold globally, around 1% of the market. In 2025 it was 14 million, close to a fifth of all cars sold. Battery prices have fallen by roughly 90% since 2010. The IEA has revised its projections upwards again and again because deployment kept beating the forecasts. If you want to see where this ends, look at Norway. In the first quarter of 2026, fully electric cars were 98% of new sales. But the real story now isn't Norway or China. It's the emerging markets. Ethiopia banned petrol and diesel car imports in 2024, and by year end more than 60% of new cars sold were electric. Nepal went from under 1% of new four-wheeler imports in 2019-20 to more than 75% in 2024. Four years. Norway needed almost two decades to do something similar. Here's the mistake people keep making. They judge the future of transport from the cars on the road today. But the fleet tells you about the past. The sales figures tell you about the future. And they are only going in one direction. Daniel Tisch, ICD.D shared thisThis year's news cycles have brought plenty of dispiriting and dystopic stories: of conflict, cruelty, cowardice, selfishness and ecological disaster - so much of it fuelled by disinformation. I admit that I can't shut it down - even on holiday. That's why I look for narratives that give me hope. And that's what I found by spending part of my recent South American vacation reading 'Finding Grace', a novel by my friend Rocco Rossi. Inspired by his experiences on the Camino de Santiago in Spain, it's a wonderful story of redemption and compassion, and a reminder of our common humanity. Daniel Tisch, ICD.D reposted thisDaniel Tisch, ICD.D reposted thisAlmost two-thirds of Americans (64%) believe that President Trump's tariffs are damaging the U.S. economy in the near term, according to the August POLITICO Poll, conducted with Public First, an independent polling company headquartered in London. With cost-of-living issues the top issue for voters by a wide margin, Americans blaming tariffs for hurting the economy means the issue will factor heavily into midterm elections in November. Other interesting findings: - A plurality of Americans (43%) say tariffs are hurting the country now, and will continue to hurt over the long term. - Only 8% of Americans agree with the Trump administration's contention that tariffs are already benefiting the U.S. economy and will do so in the long term. This political environment makes it risky for the White House to launch a high-profile trade war with Canada two months before the elections. Decisions are being made right now about investment, hiring, supply chains, pricing and growth. We need to be clear about the challenges we face and focused on the actions required to address them. Any agreement with the United States must protect Canada’s sovereignty, strategic interests and long-term economic strength. Any Canadian response should be targeted, measured and informed by those most affected. At the same time, we must move decisively on what we can control. That means strengthening Canada’s economy by removing barriers to growth, opening new markets, attracting investment, supporting Canadian companies to scale and investing in infrastructure, talent, innovation and high-potential sectors. This is shared work. Governments, business leaders, consumers, post-secondary institutions and community partners all have a role to play. The Ottawa Board of Trade is working closely with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Ontario Chamber of Commerce and Canadian Global Cities Council to ensure the voice of our businesses is heard in national discussions. In the National Capital Region, we must turn national resolve into regional progress by strengthening partnerships, supporting local businesses and investing in the assets that will drive our future. We acknowledge that the road ahead will be more difficult for some businesses and sectors, while staying united around our shared commitment to Canada’s long-term economic strength. Together, we will protect what we have built, invest in what comes next and grow a stronger capital region and a stronger Canada.

Google says it is merely applying its policy of following official government databases. Technically, that may be true. But Google was under no legal obligation to make this change. MapQuest refused. The question is why. For corporate leaders, the risk calculation in today’s America has fundamentally changed. A company (or other entities) that resists the wishes of the President may suddenly find itself targeted by a highly politicized DOJ, facing an investigation or even a manufactured charge. Whether the allegation ultimately survives judicial scrutiny may be irrelevant. The reputational damage, legal costs, market reaction and disruption to the business begin immediately. That possibility creates a powerful incentive to fall in line even when no direct instruction has been issued. Corporations learn to anticipate what political power expects of them and quietly adjust their behaviour accordingly. Compliance is then explained as established policy, administrative consistency or good business judgment. This does not necessarily excuse Google’s decision (it would be nice to see a bit of courage from some of these companies), but it helps explain it. The implications extend well beyond American corporations. Any Canadian company with substantial operations, investments, customers or regulatory exposure in the US must consider political retaliation as a genuine business risk. Traditional assessments of market conditions, taxation and regulatory compliance are no longer sufficient. Companies must also evaluate whether a perfectly lawful corporate decision could attract the attention of a President who increasingly treats the machinery of government as an instrument of personal power. That is where the real danger lies. Political pressure does not need to be stated openly when institutions already understand the potential consequences of resistance. Google’s decision may appear to be about the name of a lake. It is really about how corporations behave when the rule of law becomes uncertain, political power becomes personal, and the cost of saying no becomes impossible to calculate.

Note that the French cartographer (Bellin) considered the lands below the Great Lakes to be part of Canada or New France. But in the 1783 peace treaty ending the American Revolution, Britain and the United States agreed that the border ran through the middle of most of the Great Lakes. Vergennes, the French foreign minister was appalled that the British had conceded so much territory to the Americans but there was nothing he could do about it. #hedidnotconquer #canada #history #book #ontario

I used the time to build a portfolio, get my pilot's license, and finally follow a curiosity about AI I'd never had time for before. That curiosity turned into eight conversations with Chief Communication Officers, a weekly habit with two friends who shared the fascination, a whitepaper, and eventually Scriptorium Initiative. I wrote down what those two years actually taught me. About persevering with something radical before anyone else gets it. About needing to build, keep learning and being challenged, at any age.
