Reacher Season 4 drops a pretty big bombshell in Episode 4, "Karambits and Pieces." Not only does the audience learn that Lila (Agnez Mo) and Amisha Hoth (Anggun) are not who they claimed to be, but that they're also wrapped up in the greater conspiracy behind Anna Merrick’s (Karen Kwong-Chip) suicide — and responsible for kidnapping and brutally murdering her son. After learning that the Hoths are the ones behind everything in Episode 5's cold open, Reacher (Alan Ritchson) utters one of the most important lines in the show’s history. In just four words, the Prime Video series completely dismantles its main hero and brings him to a huge low point, making him a far more fascinating character in the process.
Reacher Makes One of His Biggest Mistakes in Season 4
Reacher's decision to believe Lila Hoth's initial version of events marks a pretty huge mistake for the show's eponymous hero, and his admission in Episode 5 — "I got it wrong" — is a rare one for the character. It's a moment that feels reminiscent of the show's first season, in which Reacher believes most law enforcement officials in Margrave were corrupt and collaborating with the Kliners in their counterfeiting scheme, including Dwight Stevenson (Jonathan Koensgen).
What's interesting about Reacher's relationship with Lila is how he lets her off the hook after catching her first lie, when she claims to be Congressman John Sampson's (Marc Blucas) illegitimate child seeking his assistance for a bone marrow transplant. He also buys into Lila's second cover story about being an investigative journalist far too quickly. Considering Reacher's caution around others, especially strangers, he seemed oddly accommodating and vulnerable in Lila's presence. Perhaps it was due to his romantic attraction to her, or maybe he was heeding his own mother's words that he needed to use his strength to help others and always do the right thing. For whatever reason, the revelation that the Hoths are assassins leaves Reacher reeling and on the defensive throughout most of "Bridge," but his mistake actually makes him a far more grounded character.
Reacher's Mistake in Season 4 Proves He's a Flawed, More Human Hero

Reacher often depicts its titular hero as an idealized power fantasy. He rarely screws up, and he's as mentally competent as he is physically skilled in a fight. He also hardly ever misreads people as poorly as he does Lila and Amisha. It's an unusual instance, but it also shows that the larger-than-life Reacher is still human and capable of mistakes and poor judgment, just like anyone else. If Reacher never slipped up, then the series would get boring quickly.
Reacher recognizing the gravity of his error also makes him a more compelling character. Reacher normally stays five steps ahead of his enemies, but now he's been implicated in Lila and Amisha's crimes and is a fugitive from the law. By the end of "Bridge," both Reacher and his would-be partner, Tamara Green (Sydelle Noel), are on the run, with Philadelphia's entire police force — not to mention the CIA, mercenaries, and the Hoths — in pursuit. The odds have been greatly stacked against Reacher, and his misjudgment of the Hoths has significantly raised the tension and stakes in Season 4.
As it turns out, Reacher also forgot one of his most important rules in Season 4. As he's said many times, "In an investigation, assumptions kill." Reacher assumed that Lila was innocent, and his assumptions led to both a higher death toll and him becoming a wanted fugitive. Now Lila and Amisha have more leverage, as they seem to know the significance of Anna Merrick's mysterious thumb drive, and they're also holding her brother Jacob (Christopher Rodriguez-Marquette) hostage when they confront Reacher by the end of the show's latest episode. It will be interesting to see what happens as Reacher Season 4 continues, especially now that Reacher is forced to deal with the fallout of one of his biggest mistakes.
