Ethereal Breakdown is a 32-level megawad for Doom 64, first released on October 28, 2022. It was originally announced in late 2021 as a Doom 64 25th anniversary community map jam project, as a tribute to the original game's release in 1997, and drew a wide variety of mappers, including some who had worked on a previous community project for the game, Community Chest 64.
Ethereal Breakdown includes a number of differences from traditional Doom 64 mappacks, such as a hub map (inspired by various Quake map jams) where most of the levels may be chosen and played, a partial new soundtrack composed exclusively for the project, and a system whereby the new artifacts are required to unlock and complete the final map of the game.
Ethereal Breakdown received an honorable mention at the 2022 Cacowards.

Custom actors[edit]
The Demon Keys have been replaced by three new artifacts: the Artifact of Spirit, the Artifact of Body and the Artifact of Mind. Besides powering up the Unmaker as the originals do, these powerups are necessary in order to be able to access the final map. Additionally, they are the only items the player will keep throughout the game, as completing each map resets the player's inventory.
