Lore[edit]
Thira’s command station drifts over the frozen tundra of Argent D'Nur's northern frontier. It was built decades ago during the Crimson Uprising, bristling with defensive batteries and energy disruptors and encased in reinforced Wraithsteel. Originally built to counter the Ironclad Tribes, it has become the nerve center of Thira’s operations in the war against Hell.

Inspiration and development[edit]
According to id Software concept artist Ethan Evans, the station or as some concept art refers to it, the "Sentinel Command Center", during concept exploration stages, was originally intended to be in planetary orbit, and some of Evans' concept art depicts the station orbiting Mars. This was changed to a mountain setting in the final game.[1]
Following a request to add an extra area to the start of the level, id Software's environment lead artist Kevin Dunlop built the Atlan lab that the player passes through in a couple of days. Dunlop himself requested a couple of narrative elements for the lab, such as a moving Atlan hand that was inspired by Patlabor 2.[2]
Also according to Dunlop, the airlock that the player enters immediately after passing through the lab was created a couple of weeks before production of the map started. The level was initially going to be much more sci-fi in style, but the airlock was designed as a mix of Sentinel and military bunker styles. This shift in style allowed the design team to complete this map well within budget and finish on a very short production time.[3]
Trivia[edit]
- The “Wait For It” challenge is identical to a challenge from the Necropolis level in Doom (2016).
