Mehdi Berry (Arabic: مهدي البري; born 17 February 1995) is a Tunisian professional handball player who plays as a centre back for the Bosnian club RK Sloboda Tuzla.[1][2][3][4] He previously played for Étoile Sportive du Sahel and Club Africain in the top tier Tunisian Handball League. His career has been covered by Tunisian and Bosnian sports media, which highlight his domestic, regional and international experience.[5][1][3]

Early life

[edit]

Berry was born on 17 February 1995 in Tunisia.[5] His player profile lists him as 1.83 m (6 ft 0 in) tall and weighing 80 kg (176 lb).[5] According to his player profile, Berry lists Arabic and French as native or bilingual proficiency languages, and English as a language in which he has full professional proficiency.[5][6] He developed in the youth and senior system of Étoile Sportive du Sahel, one of Tunisia’s leading handball clubs.[5][1]

Club career

[edit]

Étoile Sportive du Sahel (2011–2024)

[edit]

Berry began his professional career with Étoile Sportive du Sahel and spent many seasons at the club.[5] His player profile credits him with winning a Tunisian league championship and multiple victories in the Tunisian Handball Cup.[5] He also took part in regional Arab and African regional tournaments, including the African Men's Handball Cup Winners' Cup and both Arab Handball Championship of Champions and the Arab Handball Championship of Winners' Cup.[5]

According to his LinkedIn profile, Berry lists Étoile Sportive du Sahel and Club Africain among the clubs he has played for.[6]

Club Africain (2024–2025)

[edit]

Berry later joined Club Africain, where Tunisian media identified him as a reinforcement for the team’s backcourt following his time with Étoile Sportive du Sahel.[1][2]

RK Sloboda Tuzla (2025–present)

[edit]

In September 2025, Berry signed with RK Sloboda Tuzla of the Bosnian Premier Handball League.[1][2][3][7][4] His transfer was also reported in the English edition of Tunisie Numérique.[8] Bosnian outlet SportSport.ba described him as an experienced addition with a “rich career” and noted that he brings experience from Tunisian domestic competitions as well as regional Arab and African tournaments.[3] Local media in Tuzla also presented his arrival as part of the club’s broader competitive ambitions.[9]

In a pre-match interview, Berry emphasised the importance of preparation and teamwork, highlighting the club’s young and motivated squad.[9]

International career

[edit]

Berry represented Tunisia at the 2015 IHF Men’s Junior World Championship held in Brazil, where the official IHF roster lists him among the national team squad.[10]

Match commentary from the same tournament recorded Berry scoring five goals in Tunisia’s match against Belarus.[11] His later club transfers were covered by sports media, which also referred to him as a Tunisian international player.[1][2][7]

Playing style

[edit]

Berry primarily plays as a centre back (playmaker). His player profile describes him as strong, fast, and effective in both attack and defence.[5] Bosnian and Tunisian sports media have presented him as an experienced backcourt player expected to bring stability and leadership to RK Sloboda Tuzla.[3][9]
