Projects are not stored locally; resources are

[edit]

I can't find any in-depth discussion on the Web, but Windows 11 ClipChamp works differently as compared with most other video editors.

The internal data structures representing a ClipChamp project appear to be stored in the cloud (they state that updating happens automatically via a ClipChamp account every five seconds), with some redundancy locally in a set of undocumented Microsoft Edge databases. The program itself is a Widget (what used to be called something like a "Modern" or "Metro" application in Windows 10).

Resources (videos and other files that are data inputs to a project) are stored locally, and must always remain in the same locations in the file system for a project to continue working.

Video output files (exports) are always created in the standard Windows 11 user\Downloads folder, not in any current browser download folder. They can be cut or copied from the Download folder.

It appears near impossible to store or retrieve backups for projects, or copy them to a folder or copy them as files to another person or company. ClipChamp projects can be accessed by anyone having the original account credentials.

ClipchampMicrosoft Clipchamp – As of November, Microsoft started renaming "Clipchamp" to "Microsoft Clipchamp" across all platforms: they changed its listing on the Start Menu, renamed the link in App Store from "clipchamp" to "microsoft-clipchamp", and every mention to it in the app is now "Microsoft Clipchamp". ―Eduardogobi (talk) 03:48, 19 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
