Valentin Vacherot (French: [valɑ̃tɛ̃ vaʃʁo]; born 16 November 1998) is a Monégasque professional tennis player. He has a career-high ATP singles ranking of world No. 40, achieved on 13 October 2025 and a doubles ranking of No. 476, achieved on 20 February 2023.[2] In 2025, Vacherot became the first player from his nation to win an ATP Tour singles title and the lowest ranked champion in Masters 1000 history (since 1990), at the Shanghai Masters.[3][4] He also became the first Monégasque player to reach the top-50 in singles and to record a Top 5 win.[5][6][7] He is the current No. 1 Monaco singles player.[8]

Vacherot played college tennis at Texas A&M University.

He represents Monaco at the Davis Cup, where he has a win–loss record of 10–3.

Personal life

[edit]

Vacherot is coached professionally by his half-brother Benjamin Balleret, a retired tennis player.[9] He is cousin to Arthur Rinderknech[10] and a nephew of Virginie Paquet (Rinderknech’s mother).[11]

In October 2025, he and his cousin Rinderknech both reached the final of a Masters 1000 for the first time in their respective careers at the Shanghai Masters.[12][13][3]

Career

[edit]

2022: Maiden Challenger title

[edit]

In 2022, Vacherot won his maiden Challenger title at the Nonthaburi Challenger, Thailand, beating Lý Hoàng Nam in the final.[14][15][16] Vacherot became Monaco’s second Challenger champion and the first since Jean-René Lisnard in 2004.[17]

2023: Masters debut

[edit]

He received a wildcard for the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters main draw, making his Masters debut.[11][18] He lost in the first round to Luca Nardi.[19]

2024: Grand Slam debut, top 110

[edit]

Vacherot also received a wildcard for the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters,[16][20] losing to ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov.[21] Ranked No. 136, he qualified for the main draw at the 2024 Țiriac Open but lost his opening match to eventual champion Márton Fucsovics.[22] Vacherot reached the top 120 on 6 May 2024, following a semifinal appearance as a qualifier, at the 2024 Open Aix Provence.[2] He defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic, qualifier Felipe Meligeni Alves and alternate Richard Gasquet before losing to eventual champion and third seed Alejandro Tabilo.[23]

He made his Grand Slam debut at the 2024 French Open after qualifying, becoming the first player from the Monégasque Tennis Federation to qualify for the main draw.[24][25] He lost in the first round to 32nd seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.[26]

2025: Historic Masters title and top 40 debut

[edit]

Vacherot also received a wildcard for the 2025 Monte-Carlo Masters[27][28] and recorded his first Masters win over Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets.[29][30] He became the first Monégasque player to win a main draw match at the tournament since Jean-René Lisnard in 2009.[31].

In October, ranked No. 204, Vacherot won his maiden Masters 1000 title at the 2025 Rolex Shanghai Masters as a qualifier, becoming the lowest ranked player to ever win such a tournament. After qualifying, he recorded his second and third Masters wins[32] by defeating Laslo Djere in the first round and 14th-seed Alexander Bublik in the second round after dropping the first set.[33][34] Vacherot reached his first career Masters 1000 fourth round following the retirement of 20th-seed Tomáš Macháč. He then upset 27th-seed Tallon Griekspoor, despite dropping the first set for a second time, to reach his first Masters quarterfinal and thus became the lowest-ranked quarterfinalist in the event history in Shanghai, and the first player from Monaco to reach an ATP Tour and Masters 1000-level quarterfinal.[35][36][37] He defeated 10th-seed Holger Rune in the quarterfinal after dropping the first set for the third time in the tournament. Vacherot would next face a top-5 opponent for the first time in his career and defeated 4th-seed Novak Djokovic in the semifinals in straight sets, being the lowest ranked player to ever reach a Masters 1000 final.[38] In just Vacherot’s 27th Tour-level match, he defeated his first cousin Arthur Rinderknech in 3 sets, after dropping the first set for the fourth time in Shanghai to win his first ATP Tour and Masters 1000 title.[3] Going into the Shanghai final, Vacherot and Rinderknech had each won 3 matches after dropping the first set. The cousins also collectively defeated 10, 5 each, of the 32 seeds in the 2025 Shanghai Masters.
