Jordi Torras ha compartido estoJordi Torras ha compartido esto🚀 Beyond the Hype: 5 Reality Checks on AI from Cannes Last week at WAICF - World AI Cannes Festival, I joined Mariavittoria Zaglio, Harry Haeck, Jordi Torras, and Stefano Quintarelli to talk about a shift we’re all feeling: the move from "investing in AI" to "actually making AI pay off." The "infrastructure era" is maturing. By now, using AI to clean up your back office or draft marketing emails isn't a competitive edge - it’s just the baseline. To find real ROI in 2026, you have to look deeper. Here are five takeaways from our discussion: 1. Don't just automate. Amplify. ⚡ The real winners aren't just using AI for generic tasks. Real ROI happens when AI amplifies your core competence. If you’re a logistics firm, AI should make your routing unbeatable. If you’re in R&D, it should 10x your discovery speed. Automating the "boring stuff" keeps you in the game, but doubling down on your "secret sauce" is how you win it. 2. From SaaS to "Outcome-as-a-Service" 🔄 The old "Software-as-a-Service" model is being flipped on its head. We’re moving toward "Service-as-a-Software." Why pay for 100 software seats for humans to do a task when an AI agent can just deliver the result? ROI is shifting from paying for the tool to paying for the outcome. 3. AI Sovereignty is a Margin Play 🌍 The logic here is straightforward: Countries want sovereign AI for independence. Companies want sovereign AI to protect their margins. If your entire business relies on a third-party API, you’re at the mercy of their price hikes and policy changes. Owning your models isn’t just a tech flex - it’s a financial survival strategy. 4. Space Tech: Making the Complex Simple 🛰️ Our portfolio company SkyFi is a great example of this. They use AI to take massive, high-resolution satellite datasets which used to be impossible for most businesses to touch and turn them into simple, profitable decisions. It’s about taking "expert-only" data and making it useful for everyone. 5. Physical AI: Specificity > "Shiny" Robots 🤖 Don't get distracted by the "cool factor" of general-purpose humanoids just yet. The immediate cash flow is in Niche Physical AI. We’re seeing massive ROI in specialized automation, like the deployment and maintenance of energy projects. Solving one expensive, physical problem perfectly yields much better margins than a robot that tries to do everything. The bottom line: The market is no longer rewarding companies just for being "AI-enabled." It’s rewarding companies that use AI to become the absolute best in their specific field. What’s your take? At the World AI Cannes Festival, representing FINEDA, that question was front and center. FINEDA organised and led the panel “From Capital to Adoption: How to Unlock ROI in AI,” bringing together Harry Haeck of Smartfin, Stefano Quintarelli of Rialto Capital, Dr. Oleg Demidov of Beyond Earth Ventures, and Jordi Torras, an AI strategist and expert. The discussion focused on what separates AI hype from AI performance: disciplined capital allocation, operational execution, and measurable return. One of the most interesting exchanges for me was with Dr. Oleg Demidov on the current state of AI development in Russia. We discussed how geopolitical pressure, infrastructure access, and capital constraints shape innovation differently across regions. Understanding these structural differences is essential when thinking about AI globally rather than locally. Beyond the panel, I spent time with teams building the infrastructure behind real adoption. At the Ontario stand, I spoke with Diego Ribas Moraes about the province’s AI ecosystem. With over 400 AI firms and institutions such as the Vector Institute, University of Toronto, and University of Waterloo, Ontario has built a serious research to industry pipeline. The depth of integration between academia, infrastructure, and commercialisation was clear. I also spoke with Clement Rochais from Datadog. Needless to say that observability and security are not secondary to AI deployment, they are foundational. Datadog’s unified platform across metrics, traces, logs, and security signals, enhanced by AI driven insights and automated remediation, reflects where enterprise AI is heading: scalable, secure, and operationally embedded. The strongest takeaway from WAICF - World AI Cannes Festival: AI is no longer about experimentation. Competitive advantage now depends on integration, infrastructure, and execution. Hace un año, Tíscar Lara Pepe Cerezo y yo acabábamos de entregar el libro "IA y Educación. Una relación con costuras" a Manuel Ortuño de Trama editorial. Empezaba el camino de edición (preciosa y muy cuidada, por cierto) y de todo lo que nos ha pasado durante este año. Hoy os estoy escribiendo desde la 42.a Feria Internacional del Libro de Buenos Aires. Me parece increíble¡ Ya lo he contado varias veces. El libro surge del encargo que nos hace Pepe para escribir el 2º volumen de su proyecto de reflexión sobre la transformación digital, Biblioteca DigitalJourney.es. Si no hubiera habido esa invitación y si esa invitación no hubiera venido de un amigo, nunca habríamos escrito el libro. De hecho, tardamos bastante en ponernos después de haberle dado el sí a Pepe. Por un lado, teníamos la duda de qué decir. No estábamos seguros de poder añadir algo diferente. Otra perspectiva, otra mirada. Teníamos dudas. Muchas. Por otro, nos daba pereza escribir un libro más sobre un tema (inteligencia artificial) en el que cada día salen literalmente cientos de publicaciones. Nos parecía que embarcarnos en esa escritura iba a ser una tarea sin sentido, condenada antes de empezar al olvido y a la irrelevancia. En realidad, teníamos la misma sensación que creo tenemos todos con mucho de lo que nos pasa. Esa sensación de estar desbordados, de no poder más, de ir de un lado a otro corriendo, sin pensar, dominados por una inmovilidad frenética que recorre nuestras vidas. Luchamos a diario con una interminable lista de pendientes que nos atormenta a cada momento. Nunca estamos en lo que estamos porque siempre estamos en otro sitio. Nunca estamos en nada porque queremos estar en todo. No podemos parar. Todo es urgente. No hay espacio, ni tiempo. Estamos saturados. No podemos pensar. Esa era la sensación que teníamos Tíscar y yo antes de empezar, pero paradójicamente (y sé que esto no es un descubrimiento) parar para escribir nos dio tiempo. Detenernos a conversar entre nosotros y poner por escrito un pensamiento dudoso, incierto e inseguro, nos permitió saber qué pensábamos sobre el tema. Paradójicamente "parar nos permitió fabricar tiempo", recuperar tiempo. Escribir el libro nos permitió saber qué pensábamos sobre la compleja relación entre IA y educación. Lo interesante es que, como siempre, ese "saber" nunca es cerrado, siempre es abierto. Pero ese punto de partida es el que no permite recorrer el camino. La relación entre la IA y la educación está llena de costuras. Nos está exigiendo a todos que no demos nada por sentado, que no aceptemos los relatos que nos tratan de vender otros, que nos hagamos cargo del asunto y que nos tomemos el asunto en serio.
