2025-06-10tools/resolve_btfids: Fix build when cross compiling kernel with clang.Suleiman Souhlal1-1/+1
When cross compiling the kernel with clang, we need to override CLANG_CROSS_FLAGS when preparing the step libraries. Prior to commit d1d096312176 ("tools: fix annoying "mkdir -p ..." logs when building tools in parallel"), MAKEFLAGS would have been set to a value that wouldn't set a value for CLANG_CROSS_FLAGS, hiding the fact that we weren't properly overriding it. 2025-05-27bpftool: Add support for custom BTF path in prog load/loadallJiayuan Chen3-5/+21
This patch exposes the btf_custom_path feature to bpftool, allowing users to specify a custom BTF file when loading BPF programs using prog load or prog loadall commands. The argument 'btf_custom_path' in libbpf is used for those kernels that don't have CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO_BTF enabled but still want to perform CO-RE relocations. 2025-05-08bpftool: Fix cgroup command to only show cgroup bpf programsMartin KaFai Lau1-6/+6
The netkit program is not a cgroup bpf program and should not be shown in the output of the "bpftool cgroup show" command. However, if the netkit device happens to have ifindex 3, the "bpftool cgroup show" command will output the netkit bpf program as well: > ip -d link show dev nk1 3: nk1@if2: ... link/ether ... netkit mode ... > bpftool net show tc: nk1(3) netkit/peer tw_ns_nk2phy prog_id 469447 > bpftool cgroup show /sys/fs/cgroup/... ID AttachType AttachFlags Name ... ... ... 469447 netkit_peer tw_ns_nk2phy The reason is that the target_fd (which is the cgroup_fd here) and the target_ifindex are in a union in the uapi/linux/bpf.h. The bpftool iterates all values in "enum bpf_attach_type" which includes non cgroup attach types like netkit. The cgroup_fd is usually 3 here, so the bug is triggered when the netkit ifindex just happens to be 3 as well. The bpftool's cgroup.c already has a list of cgroup-only attach type defined in "cgroup_attach_types[]". This patch fixes it by iterating over "cgroup_attach_types[]" instead of "__MAX_BPF_ATTACH_TYPE". 2025-05-06bpftool: Fix regression of "bpftool cgroup tree" EINVAL on older kernelsYiFei Zhu1-1/+1
If cgroup_has_attached_progs queries an attach type not supported by the running kernel, due to the kernel being older than the bpftool build, it would encounter an -EINVAL from BPF_PROG_QUERY syscall. Prior to commit 98b303c9bf05 ("bpftool: Query only cgroup-related attach types"), this EINVAL would be ignored by the function, allowing the function to only consider supported attach types. The commit changed so that, instead of querying all attach types, only attach types from the array `cgroup_attach_types` is queried. The assumption is that because these are only cgroup attach types, they should all be supported. Unfortunately this assumption may be false when the kernel is older than the bpftool build, where the attach types queried by bpftool is not yet implemented in the kernel. This would result in errors such as: $ bpftool cgroup tree CgroupPath ID AttachType AttachFlags Name Error: can't query bpf programs attached to /sys/fs/cgroup: Invalid argument This patch restores the logic of ignoring EINVAL from prior to that patch. The `readlink(path, buf, sizeof(buf))` call reads at most sizeof(buf) bytes and *does not* append null-terminator to buf. With respect to that, fix two pieces in get_fd_type: 1. 2025-01-10bpftool: Fix control flow graph segfault during edge creationChristoph Werle1-0/+1
If the last instruction of a control flow graph building block is a BPF_CALL, an incorrect edge with e->dst set to NULL is created and results in a segfault during graph output. Ensure that BPF_CALL as last instruction of a building block is handled correctly and only generates a single edge unlike actual BPF_JUMP* instructions. Some projects, for example xdp-tools [0], prefer to check in a minimized vmlinux.h rather than the complete file which can get rather large. However, when you try to add a minimized version of a complex struct (eg struct xfrm_state), things can get quite complex if you're trying to manually untangle and deduplicate the dependencies. This commit teaches bpftool to do a minimized dump of a specific types by providing a optional root_id argument(s). Handle invalid root_type_ids early, as an invalid ID will cause dumpers to half-emit valid boilerplate and then bail with an unclean exit. This patch introduces a new probe to check whether the kernel supports instruction set extensions v4. The v4 extension comprises several new instructions: BPF_{SDIV,SMOD} (signed div and mod), BPF_{LD,LDX,ST,STX,MOV} (sign-extended load/store/move), 32-bit BPF_JA (unconditional jump), target-independent BPF_ALU64 BSWAP (byte-swapping 16/32/64). These have been introduced in the following commits respectively: * ec0e2da95f72 ("bpf: Support new signed div/mod instructions.") * 1f9a1ea821ff ("bpf: Support new sign-extension load insns") * 8100928c8814 ("bpf: Support new sign-extension mov insns") * 4cd58e9af8b9 ("bpf: Support new 32bit offset jmp instruction") * 0845c3db7bf5 ("bpf: Support new unconditional bswap instruction") Support in bpftool for previous ISA extensions was added in commit 0fd800b2456c ("bpftool: Probe for instruction set extensions"). These probes are useful for userspace BPF projects that want to use newer instruction set extensions on newer kernels, to reduce the programs' sizes or their complexity. When netfilter has no entry to display, qsort is called with qsort(NULL, 0, ...). This results in undefined behavior, as UBSan reports: net.c:827:2: runtime error: null pointer passed as argument 1, which is declared to never be null Although the C standard does not explicitly state whether calling qsort with a NULL pointer when the size is 0 constitutes undefined behavior, Section 7.1.4 of the C standard (Use of library functions) mentions: "Each of the following statements applies unless explicitly stated otherwise in the detailed descriptions that follow: If an argument to a function has an invalid value (such as a value outside the domain of the function, or a pointer outside the address space of the program, or a null pointer, or a pointer to non-modifiable storage when the corresponding parameter is not const-qualified) or a type (after promotion) not expected by a function with variable number of arguments, the behavior is undefined." To avoid this, add an early return when nf_link_info is NULL to prevent calling qsort with a NULL pointer. 2024-07-09bpftool: improve skeleton backwards compat with old buggy libbpfsAndrii Nakryiko1-14/+32
Old versions of libbpf don't handle varying sizes of bpf_map_skeleton struct correctly. As such, BPF skeleton generated by newest bpftool might not be compatible with older libbpf (though only when libbpf is used as a shared library), even though it, by design, should. Going forward libbpf will be fixed, plus we'll release bug fixed versions of relevant old libbpfs, but meanwhile try to mitigate from bpftool side by conservatively assuming older and smaller definition of bpf_map_skeleton, if possible. Meaning, if there are no struct_ops maps. If there are struct_ops, then presumably user would like to have auto-attaching logic and struct_ops map link placeholders, so use the full bpf_map_skeleton definition in that case. 2024-06-21bpftool: Allow compile-time checks of BPF map auto-attach support in skeletonAndrii Nakryiko1-0/+2
New versions of bpftool now emit additional link placeholders for BPF maps (struct_ops maps are the only maps right now that support attachment), and set up BPF skeleton in such a way that libbpf will auto-attach BPF maps automatically, assumming libbpf is recent enough (v1.5+). Old libbpf will do nothing with those links and won't attempt to auto-attach maps. This allows user code to handle both pre-v1.5 and v1.5+ versions of libbpf at runtime, if necessary. But if users don't have (or don't want to) control bpftool version that generates skeleton, then they can't just assume that skeleton will have link placeholders. To make this detection possible and easy, let's add the following to generated skeleton header file: #define BPF_SKEL_SUPPORTS_MAP_AUTO_ATTACH 1 This can be used during compilation time to guard code that accesses skel->links.<map> slots. Note, if auto-attachment is undesirable, libbpf allows to disable this through bpf_map__set_autoattach(map, false). This is necessary only on libbpf v1.5+, older libbpf doesn't support map auto-attach anyways. Libbpf version can be detected at compilation time using LIBBPF_MAJOR_VERSION and LIBBPF_MINOR_VERSION macros, or at runtime with libbpf_major_version() and libbpf_minor_version() APIs. err is a 32-bit integer, but elf_update returns an off_t, which is 64-bit at least on 64-bit platforms. If symbols_patch is called on a binary between 2-4GB in size, the result will be negative when cast to a 32-bit integer, which the code assumes means an error occurred. This can wrongly trigger build failures when building very large kernel images. Sort bpftool c dump output; aiming to simplify vmlinux.h diffing and forcing more natural type definitions ordering. Definitions are sorted first by their BTF kind ranks, then by their base type name and by their own name. Type ranks Assign ranks to btf kinds (defined in function btf_type_rank) to set next order: 1. Anonymous enums/enums64 2. Named enums/enums64 3. Trivial types typedefs (ints, then floats) 4. Structs/Unions 5. Function prototypes 6. Forward declarations Type rank is set to maximum for unnamed reference types, structs and unions to avoid emitting those types early. They will be emitted as part of the type chain starting with named type. Lexicographical ordering Each type is assigned a sort_name and own_name. sort_name is the resolved name of the final base type for reference types (typedef, pointer, array etc). Sorting by sort_name allows to group typedefs of the same base type. sort_name for non-reference type is the same as own_name. own_name is a direct name of particular type, is used as final sorting step. When pinning programs/objects under PATH (eg: during "bpftool prog loadall") the bpffs is mounted on the parent dir of PATH in the following situations: - the given dir exists but it is not bpffs. - the given dir doesn't exist and the parent dir is not bpffs. Mounting on the parent dir can also have the unintentional side- effect of hiding other files located under the parent dir. If the given dir exists but is not bpffs, then the bpffs should be mounted on the given dir and not its parent dir. When generated BPF skeleton header is included in C++ code base, some compiler setups will emit warning about using language extensions due to typeof() usage, resulting in something like: error: extension used [-Werror,-Wlanguage-extension-token] obj->struct_ops.empty_tcp_ca = (typeof(obj->struct_ops.empty_tcp_ca)) ^ It looks like __typeof__() is a preferred way to do typeof() with better C++ compatibility behavior, so switch to that. The rST manual pages for bpftool would use a mix of tabs and spaces for indentation. While this is the norm in C code, this is rather unusual for rST documents, and over time we've seen many contributors use a wrong level of indentation for documentation update. Let's fix bpftool's indentation in docs once and for all: - Let's use spaces, that are more common in rST files. - Remove one level of indentation for the synopsis, the command description, and the "see also" section. As a result, all sections start with the same indentation level in the generated man page. - Rewrap the paragraphs after the changes. There is no content change in this patch, only indentation and rewrapping changes. The wrapping in the generated source files for the manual pages is changed, but the pages displayed with "man" remain the same, apart from the adjusted indentation level on relevant sections. 2024-03-20bpftool: Clean up HOST_CFLAGS, HOST_LDFLAGS for bootstrap bpftoolQuentin Monnet1-4/+5
Bpftool's Makefile uses $(HOST_CFLAGS) to build the bootstrap version of bpftool, in order to pick the flags for the host (where we run the bootstrap version) and not for the target system (where we plan to run the full bpftool binary). But we pass too much information through this variable. In particular, we set HOST_CFLAGS by copying most of the $(CFLAGS); but we do this after the feature detection for bpftool, which means that $(CFLAGS), hence $(HOST_CFLAGS), contain all macro definitions for using the different optional features. For example, -DHAVE_LLVM_SUPPORT may be passed to the $(HOST_CFLAGS), even though the LLVM disassembler is not used in the bootstrap version, and the related library may even be missing for the host architecture. A similar thing happens with the $(LDFLAGS), that we use unchanged for linking the bootstrap version even though they may contains flags to link against additional libraries. To address the $(HOST_CFLAGS) issue, we move the definition of $(HOST_CFLAGS) earlier in the Makefile, before the $(CFLAGS) update resulting from the feature probing - none of which being relevant to the bootstrap version. To clean up the $(LDFLAGS) for the bootstrap version, we introduce a dedicated $(HOST_LDFLAGS) variable that we base on $(LDFLAGS), before the feature probing as well. On my setup, the following macro and libraries are removed from the compiler invocation to build bpftool after this patch: -DUSE_LIBCAP -DHAVE_LLVM_SUPPORT -I/usr/lib/llvm-17/include -D_GNU_SOURCE -D__STDC_CONSTANT_MACROS -D__STDC_FORMAT_MACROS -D__STDC_LIMIT_MACROS -lLLVM-17 -L/usr/lib/llvm-17/lib Another advantage of cleaning up these flags is that displaying available features with "bpftool version" becomes more accurate for the bootstrap bpftool, and no longer reflects the features detected (and available only) for the final binary. As far as I can tell, these objects are unnecessary and were added by mistake; maybe a draft version intended to add support for loading loader programs from the bootstrap version. Anyway, we can remove these object files from the list to make the bootstrap bpftool binary a tad smaller and faster to build. 2024-03-19bpftool: Enable libbpf logs when loading pid_iter in debug modeQuentin Monnet1-7/+12
When trying to load the pid_iter BPF program used to iterate over the PIDs of the processes holding file descriptors to BPF links, we would unconditionally silence libbpf in order to keep the output clean if the kernel does not support iterators and loading fails. Although this is the desirable behaviour in most cases, this may hide bugs in the pid_iter program that prevent it from loading, and it makes it hard to debug such load failures, even in "debug" mode. Instead, it makes more sense to print libbpf's logs when we pass the -d|--debug flag to bpftool, so that users get the logs to investigate failures without having to edit bpftool's source code. LLVM automatically places __arena variables into ".arena.1" ELF section. ".arena.1" ELF section data is used as initial data image, which is exposed through skeleton and bpf_map__initial_value() to the user, if they need to tune it before the load phase. During load phase, this initial image is copied over into mmap()'ed region corresponding to arena, and discarded. Few small checks here and there had to be added to make sure this approach works with bpf_map__initial_value(), mostly due to hard-coded assumption that map->mmaped is set up with mmap() syscall and should be munmap()'ed. For arena, .arena.1 can be (much) smaller than maximum arena size, so this smaller data size has to be tracked separately. Given it is enforced that there is only one arena for entire bpf_object instance, we just keep it in a separate field. This can be generalized if necessary later. All global variables from ".arena.1" section are accessible from user space via skel->arena->name_of_var. For bss/data/rodata the skeleton/libbpf perform the following sequence: 1. addr = mmap(MAP_ANONYMOUS) 2. user space optionally modifies global vars 3. map_fd = bpf_create_map() 4. bpf_update_map_elem(map_fd, addr) // to store values into the kernel 5. mmap(addr, MAP_FIXED, map_fd) after step 5 user spaces see the values it wrote at step 2 at the same addresses arena doesn't support update_map_elem. The shadow type is translated from the original struct type of the map. The user of the skeleton use pointers of them to access the values of struct_ops maps. However, shadow types only supports certain types of fields, including scalar types and function pointers. Any fields of unsupported types are translated into an array of characters to occupy the space of the original field. Function pointers are translated into pointers of the struct bpf_program. Additionally, padding fields are generated to occupy the space between two consecutive fields. The pointers of shadow types of struct_osp maps are initialized when *__open_opts() in skeletons are called. For a map called FOO, the user can access it through the pointer at skel->struct_ops.FOO. 2024-02-07tools/resolve_btfids: Fix cross-compilation to non-host endiannessViktor Malik1-0/+35
The .BTF_ids section is pre-filled with zeroed BTF ID entries during the build and afterwards patched by resolve_btfids with correct values. Since resolve_btfids always writes in host-native endianness, it relies on libelf to do the translation when the target ELF is cross-compiled to a different endianness (this was introduced in commit 61e8aeda9398 ("bpf: Fix libelf endian handling in resolv_btfids")). Unfortunately, the translation will corrupt the flags fields of SET8 entries because these were written during vmlinux compilation and are in the correct endianness already. 2024-02-07tools/resolve_btfids: Refactor set sorting with types from btf_ids.hViktor Malik1-14/+21
Instead of using magic offsets to access BTF ID set data, leverage types from btf_ids.h (btf_id_set and btf_id_set8) which define the actual layout of the data. Thanks to this change, set sorting should also continue working if the layout changes. This requires to sync the definition of 'struct btf_id_set8' from include/linux/btf_ids.h to tools/include/linux/btf_ids.h. We don't sync the rest of the file at the moment, b/c that would require to also sync multiple dependent headers and we don't need any other defs from btf_ids.h. 2024-01-04bpfilter: remove bpfilterQuentin Deslandes1-4/+0
bpfilter was supposed to convert iptables filtering rules into BPF programs on the fly, from the kernel, through a usermode helper. The base code for the UMH was introduced in 2018, and couple of attempts (2, 3) tried to introduce the BPF program generate features but were abandoned. bpfilter now sits in a kernel tree unused and unusable, occasionally causing confusion amongst Linux users (4, 5). As bpfilter is now developed in a dedicated repository on GitHub (6), it was suggested a couple of times this year (LSFMM/BPF 2023, LPC 2023) to remove the deprecated kernel part of the project. Add support to dump XDP link information to bpftool. This reuses the recently added show_link_ifindex_{plain,json}(). The XDP link info only exposes the ifindex. Add ability to specify a network interface used to resolve XDP hints kfuncs when loading program through bpftool. Usage: bpftool prog load [...] xdpmeta_dev <ifname> Writing just 'dev <ifname>' instead of 'xdpmeta_dev' is a very probable mistake that results in not very descriptive errors, so 'bpftool prog load [...] dev <ifname>' syntax becomes deprecated, followed by 'bpftool map create [...] dev <ifname>' for consistency. Now, to offload program, execute: bpftool prog load [...] offload_dev <ifname> To offload map: bpftool map create [...] offload_dev <ifname> 'dev <ifname>' still performs offloading in the commands above, but now triggers a warning and is excluded from bash completion. 'xdpmeta_dev' and 'offload_dev' are mutually exclusive options, because 'xdpmeta_dev' basically makes a program device-bound without loading it onto the said device. For now, offloaded programs cannot use XDP hints [0], but if this changes, using 'offload_dev <ifname>' should cover this case. A new link type, BPF_LINK_TYPE_STRUCT_OPS, was added to attach struct_ops to links. (226bc6ae6405) It would be helpful for users to know which map is associated with the link. The assumption was that every link is associated with a BPF program, but this does not hold true for struct_ops. It would be better to display map_id instead of prog_id for struct_ops links. However, some tools may rely on the old assumption and need a prog_id. The discussion on the mailing list suggests that tools should parse JSON format. We will maintain the existing JSON format by adding a map_id without removing prog_id. As for plain text format, we will remove prog_id from the header line and add a map_id for struct_ops links. 2023-04-21bpftool: Register struct_ops with a link.Kui-Feng Lee4-25/+75
You can include an optional path after specifying the object name for the 'struct_ops register' subcommand. Since the commit 226bc6ae6405 ("Merge branch 'Transit between BPF TCP congestion controls.'") has been accepted, it is now possible to create a link for a struct_ops. This can be done by defining a struct_ops in SEC(".struct_ops.link") to make libbpf returns a real link. If we don't pin the links before leaving bpftool, they will disappear. To instruct bpftool to pin the links in a directory with the names of the maps, we need to provide the path of that directory. To address the conflict, we temporarily switch to a simple comment instead of a macro. 2023-04-05bpftool: Support inline annotations when dumping the CFG of a programQuentin Monnet6-26/+88
We support dumping the control flow graph of loaded programs to the DOT format with bpftool, but so far this feature wouldn't display the source code lines available through BTF along with the eBPF bytecode. Let's add support for these annotations, to make it easier to read the graph. In prog.c, we move the call to dump_xlated_cfg() in order to pass and use the full struct dump_data, instead of creating a minimal one in draw_bb_node(). We pass the pointer to this struct down to dump_xlated_for_graph() in xlated_dumper.c, where most of the logics is added. We deal with BTF mostly like we do for plain or JSON output, except that we cannot use a "nr_skip" value to skip a given number of linfo records (we don't process the BPF instructions linearly, and apart from the root of the graph we don't know how many records we should skip, so we just store the last linfo and make sure the new one we find is different before printing it). When printing the source instructions to the label of a DOT graph node, there are a few subtleties to address. We want some special newline markers, and there are some characters that we must escape. To deal with them, we introduce a new dedicated function btf_dump_linfo_dotlabel() in btf_dumper.c. We'll reuse this function in a later commit to format the filepath, line, and column references as well. 2023-02-27tools: bpftool: Remove invalid \' json escapeLuis Gerhorst1-3/+0
RFC8259 ("The JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) Data Interchange Format") only specifies \", \\, \/, \b, \f, \n, \r, and \r as valid two-character escape sequences. This does not include \', which is not required in JSON because it exclusively uses double quotes as string separators. Solidus (/) may be escaped, but does not have to. Only reverse solidus (\), double quotes ("), and the control characters have to be escaped. Therefore, with this fix, bpftool correctly supports all valid two-character escape sequences (but still does not support characters that require multi-character escape sequences). Witout this fix, attempting to load a JSON file generated by bpftool using Python 3.10.6's default json.load() may fail with the error "Invalid \escape" if the file contains the invalid escaped single quote (\'). 2023-01-25tools/resolve_btfids: Alter how HOSTCC is forcedIan Rogers1-10/+7
HOSTCC is always wanted when building. Setting CC to HOSTCC happens after tools/scripts/Makefile.include is included, meaning flags are set assuming say CC is gcc, but then it can be later set to HOSTCC which may be clang. tools/scripts/Makefile.include is needed for host set up and common macros in objtool's Makefile. Rather than override CC to HOSTCC, just pass CC as HOSTCC to Makefile.build, the libsubcmd builds and the linkage step. This means the Makefiles don't see things like CC changing and tool flag determination, and similar, work properly. Also, clear the passed subdir as otherwise an outer build may break by inadvertently passing an inappropriate value. When passing compiler variables like CC=$(HOSTCC) to a submake we must ensure the variable is quoted in order to handle cases where $(HOSTCC) may be multiple binaries. For example when using ccache $HOSTCC may be: "/usr/bin/ccache /usr/bin/gcc" If we pass CC without quotes like CC=$(HOSTCC) only the first "/usr/bin/ccache" part will be assigned to the CC variable which will cause an error due to dropping the "/usr/bin/gcc" part of the variable in the submake invocation. An update for libbpf's hashmap interface from void* -> void* to a polymorphic one, allowing both long and void* keys and values. This simplifies many use cases in libbpf as hashmaps there are mostly integer to integer. Perf copies hashmap implementation from libbpf and has to be updated as well. Changes to libbpf, selftests/bpf and perf are packed as a single commit to avoid compilation issues with any future bisect. For offloaded BPF programs, instead of failing to create the LLVM disassembler without even looking for a triple at all, do run the function that attempts to retrieve a valid architecture name for the device. It will still fail for the LLVM disassembler, because currently we have no valid triple to return (NFP disassembly is not supported by LLVM). But failing in that function is more logical than to assume in jit_disasm.c that passing an "arch" name is simply not supported. 2022-10-25bpftool: Add LLVM as default library for disassembling JIT-ed programsQuentin Monnet3-23/+141
To disassemble instructions for JIT-ed programs, bpftool has relied on the libbfd library. This has been problematic in the past: libbfd's interface is not meant to be stable and has changed several times. For building bpftool, we have to detect how the libbfd version on the system behaves, which is why we have to handle features disassembler-four-args and disassembler-init-styled in the Makefile. When it comes to shipping bpftool, this has also caused issues with several distribution maintainers unwilling to support the feature (see for example Debian's page for binutils-dev, which ships libbfd: "Note that building Debian packages which depend on the shared libbfd is Not Allowed." [0]). For these reasons, we add support for LLVM as an alternative to libbfd for disassembling instructions of JIT-ed programs. Thanks to the preparation work in the previous commits, it's easy to add the library by passing the relevant compilation options in the Makefile, and by adding the functions for setting up the LLVM disassembler in file jit_disasm.c. The LLVM disassembler requires the LLVM development package (usually llvm-dev or llvm-devel). The expectation is that the interface for this disassembler will be more stable. There is a note in LLVM's Developer Policy [1] stating that the stability for the C API is "best effort" and not guaranteed, but at least there is some effort to keep compatibility when possible (which hasn't really been the case for libbfd so far). Furthermore, the Debian page for the related LLVM package does not caution against linking to the lib, as binutils-dev page does. Naturally, the display of disassembled instructions comes with a few minor differences. Of course, we could replace libbfd entirely and avoid supporting two different libraries. One reason for keeping libbfd is that, right now, it works well, we have all we need in terms of features detection in the Makefile, so it provides a fallback for disassembling JIT-ed programs if libbfd is installed but LLVM is not. The other motivation is that libbfd supports nfp instruction for Netronome's SmartNICs and can be used to disassemble offloaded programs, something that LLVM cannot do. If libbfd's interface breaks again in the future, we might reconsider keeping support for it. It also sets variables related to libbfd's interface, given that it has changed over time. Group all those libbfd-related definitions so that it's easier to understand what we are testing for, and only use variables related to libbfd's interface if we need libbfd in the first place. In addition to make the Makefile clearer, grouping the definitions related to disassembling JIT-ed programs will help support alternatives to libbfd. The JIT disassembler in bpftool is the only components (with the JSON writer) using asserts to check the return values of functions. But it does not do so in a consistent way, and diasm_print_insn() returns no value, although sometimes the operation failed. Remove the asserts, and instead check the return values, print messages on errors, and propagate the error to the caller from prog.c. Remove the inclusion of assert.h from jit_disasm.c, and also from map.c where it is unused. 2022-10-21bpftool: Add "bootstrap" feature to version outputQuentin Monnet1-32/+49
Along with the version number, "bpftool version" displays a list of features that were selected at compilation time for bpftool. It would be useful to indicate in that list whether a binary is a bootstrap version of bpftool. Given that an increasing number of components rely on bootstrap versions for generating skeletons, this could help understand what a binary is capable of if it has been copied outside of the usual "bootstrap" directory. To detect a bootstrap version, we simply rely on the absence of implementation for the do_prog() function. To do this, we must move the (unchanged) list of commands before do_version(), which in turn requires renaming this "cmds" array to avoid shadowing it with the "cmds" argument in cmd_select(). Commands "bpftool help" or "bpftool version" use argv[0] to display the name of the binary. While it is a convenient way to retrieve the string, it does not always produce the most readable output. For example, because of the way bpftool is currently packaged on Ubuntu (using a wrapper script), the command displays the absolute path for the binary: $ bpftool version | head -n 1 /usr/lib/linux-tools/5.15.0-50-generic/bpftool v5.15.60 More generally, there is no apparent reason for keeping the whole path and exact binary name in this output. If the user wants to understand what binary is being called, there are other ways to do so. This commit replaces argv[0] with "bpftool", to simply reflect what the tool is called. This is aligned on what "ip" or "tc" do, for example. As an additional benefit, this seems to help with integration with Meson for packaging [0]. 2022-09-30bpftool: Fix error message of strerrorTianyi Liu3-12/+10
strerror() expects a positive errno, however variable err will never be positive when an error occurs. This causes bpftool to output too many "unknown error", even a simple "file not exist" error can not get an accurate message. This patch fixed all "strerror(err)" patterns in bpftool. Specially in btf.c#L823, hashmap__append() is an internal function of libbpf and will not change errno, so there's a little difference. Some libbpf_get_error() calls are kept for return values. 2022-09-21bpf: Define new BPF_MAP_TYPE_USER_RINGBUF map typeDavid Vernet2-2/+2
We want to support a ringbuf map type where samples are published from user-space, to be consumed by BPF programs. BPF currently supports a kernel -> user-space circular ring buffer via the BPF_MAP_TYPE_RINGBUF map type. We'll need to define a new map type for user-space -> kernel, as none of the helpers exported for BPF_MAP_TYPE_RINGBUF will apply to a user-space producer ring buffer, and we'll want to add one or more helper functions that would not apply for a kernel-producer ring buffer. This patch therefore adds a new BPF_MAP_TYPE_USER_RINGBUF map type definition. The map type is useless in its current form, as there is no way to access or use it for anything until we one or more BPF helpers. A follow-on patch will therefore add a new helper function that allows BPF programs to run callbacks on samples that are published to the ring buffer.
