Nicholas Carlini reports that the keyring code calls assoc_array_find() in find_key_to_update() without holding the RCU read lock, while the assoc_array_gc() code really is designed around removing the node from the tree and then freeing it after an RCU grace-period. The regular key handling doesn't see this because holding the keyring semaphore hides any lifetime issues, but the persistent key handling uses a different model. Instead of extending the keyring locking, just do the simple RCU locking that the assoc_array was designed for. Several functions in selinuxfs.c allocate temporary buffers using __get_free_page() or get_zeroed_page(). These buffers are used either to store a string generated by snprintf() (in sel_make_bools()) or to copy data from user (sel_read_avc_hash_stats() and sel_read_sidtab_hash_stats()). Such usage does not require struct page access and it is better to allocate these buffers with kzalloc()/kmalloc() that provide better scalability and more debugging possibilities. Replace use of get_zeroed_page() with kzalloc() and usage of __get_free_page() with kmalloc(). Add support for a second fine-grained UDP access right. This first half of LANDLOCK_ACCESS_NET_CONNECT_SEND_UDP controls the ability to set the remote port of a socket (via connect()). It will be useful for applications that send datagrams, and for some servers too (those creating per-client sockets, which want to receive traffic only from a specific address). Similarly as for bind(), this access control is performed when configuring sockets, not in hot code paths. Include detection of when autobind is about to be required, and check if the process would be allowed to call bind(0) explicitly. Autobind can only be performed when sending a first datagram, when connect()ing, and in some splice() EOF edge case which, afaiu, can only happen after a remote peer has been set (which is already covered). Add support for a first fine-grained UDP access right. LANDLOCK_ACCESS_NET_BIND_UDP controls the ability to set the local port of a UDP socket (via bind()). It will be useful for servers (to start receiving datagrams), and for some clients that need to use a specific source port (e.g. mDNS requires to use port 5353) For obvious performance concerns, access control is only enforced when configuring sockets, not when using them for common send/recv operations. Bump ABI to allow userspace to detect and use this new right. Mark the kzalloc_flex() of struct landlock_details with GFP_KERNEL_ACCOUNT so the allocation is charged to the calling task, like the other Landlock per-domain allocations which have used GFP_KERNEL_ACCOUNT forever. Every property of landlock_details is caller-attributable: allocated by landlock_restrict_self(2), owned by the caller's landlock_hierarchy, contents are the caller's pid, uid, comm, and exe_path, lifetime bounded by the caller's domain. While the caller may not know nor control the size of this allocation (i.e. exe_path), this data should still be accounted for it. The deciding factor is whether userspace can trigger the allocation, not whether the size of the data is known nor controlled by the caller. This aligns with the kmemcg accounting policy established by commit 5d097056c9a0 ("kmemcg: account certain kmem allocations to memcg"). No new failure modes: the hierarchy and ruleset are allocated before details and are already accounted, so landlock_restrict_self(2) already returns -ENOMEM under memcg pressure. This change widens that existing failure window slightly; it does not introduce a new error code. Set audit_net.sk in current_check_access_socket() to provide the socket object to audit_log_lsm_data(). This makes Landlock consistent with AppArmor, which always sets .sk for socket operations, and with SELinux's generic socket permission checks. The socket's local and foreign address information (laddr, lport, faddr, fport) is logged by the shared lsm_audit.c infrastructure when the socket has bound or connected state. Fields with zero values are suppressed by print_ipv4_addr()/print_ipv6_addr(), so the audit output is unchanged for the common case of bind denials on unbound sockets. For connect denials after a prior bind, the bound local address (laddr, lport) appears before the existing sockaddr fields (daddr, dest). No existing fields are removed or reordered, and the new field names (laddr, lport, faddr, fport) are standard audit fields already emitted by other LSMs through the same lsm_audit.c code path. Add net_bind and net_connect audit tests. The net_bind test verifies basic net denial auditing. The net_connect test binds to an allowed port, then connects to a denied port, and verifies that the audit record includes laddr/lport from the socket state. This adds the Hornet Linux Security Module which provides enhanced signature verification and data validation for eBPF programs. This allows users to continue to maintain an invariant that all code running inside of the kernel has actually been signed and verified, by the kernel. This effort builds upon the currently excepted upstream solution. It further hardens it by providing deterministic, in-kernel checking of map hashes to solidify auditing along with preventing TOCTOU attacks against lskel map hashes. Target map hashes are passed in via PKCS#7 signed attributes. Hornet determines the extent which the eBFP program is signed and defers to other LSMs for policy decisions. Add a new LSM hook and two new LSM hook callbacks to support LSMs that perform integrity verification, e.g. digital signature verification, of BPF programs. While the BPF subsystem does implement a signature verification scheme, it does not satisfy a number of existing requirements, adding support for BPF program integrity verification to the LSM framework allows administrators to select additional integrity verification mechanisms to meet these needs while also providing a mechanism for future expansion. It adds an additional dedicated integrity callback and a new LSM hook/callback to be called from within LSMs implementing integrity verification. The first new callback, bpf_prog_load_integrity(), located within the security_bpf_prog_load() hook, is necessary to ensure that the integrity verification callbacks are executed before any of the existing LSMs are executed via the bpf_prog_load() callback. Reusing the existing bpf_prog_load() callback for integrity verification could result in LSMs not having access to the integrity verification results when asked to authorize the BPF program load in the bpf_prog_load() callback. The new LSM hook, security_bpf_prog_load_post_integrity(), is intended to be called from within LSMs performing BPF program integrity verification. It is used to report the verdict of the integrity verification to other LSMs enforcing access control policy on BPF program loads. LSMs enforcing such access controls should register a bpf_prog_load_post_integrity() callback to receive integrity verdicts. evm_read_xattrs() allocates size + 1 bytes, fills them from the list of enabled xattrs, and then passes strlen(temp) to simple_read_from_buffer(). When no configured xattrs are enabled, the fill loop stores nothing and temp[0] remains uninitialized, so strlen() reads beyond initialized memory. Explicitly terminate the buffer after allocation, use snprintf() for each formatted line, and pass the accumulated length, without risk of truncation, to simple_read_from_buffer(). Currently there can only be a single open of /sys/fs/selinux/policy at any time. This allows any process to block any other process from reading the kernel policy. The original motivation seems to have been a mix of preventing an inconsistent view of the policy size and preventing userspace from allocating kernel memory without bound, but this is arguably equally bad. Eliminate the policy_opened flag and shrink the critical section that the policy mutex is held. While we are making changes here, drop a couple of extraneous BUG_ONs. Remove the previously deprecated /sys/fs/selinux/user interface aside from a residual stub for userspace compatibility. Commit d7b6918e22c7 ("selinux: Deprecate /sys/fs/selinux/user") started the deprecation process for /sys/fs/selinux/user: The selinuxfs "user" node allows userspace to request a list of security contexts that can be reached for a given SELinux user from a given starting context. This was used by libselinux when various login-style programs requested contexts for users, but libselinux stopped using it in 2020. Kernel support will be removed no sooner than Dec 2025. A pr_warn() message has been in place since Linux v6.13, and a 5 second sleep was introduced since Linux v6.17 to help make it more noticeable. We are now past the stated deadline of Dec 2025, so remove the underlying functionality and replace it with a stub that returns a '0\0' buffer to avoid breaking userspace. This also avoids a local DoS from logspam and an uninterruptible sleep delay. TPM_DEBUG, and other similar flags, are a non-standard way to specify a feature in Linux kernel. Introduce CONFIG_TRUSTED_KEYS_DEBUG for trusted keys, and use it to replace these ad-hoc feature flags. Given that trusted keys debug dumps can contain sensitive data, harden the feature as follows: 1. In the Kconfig description postulate that pr_debug() statements must be used. 2. Use pr_debug() statements in TPM 1.x driver to print the protocol dump. 3. Require trusted.debug=1 on the kernel command line (default: 0) to activate dumps at runtime, even when CONFIG_TRUSTED_KEYS_DEBUG=y. Traces, when actually needed, can be easily enabled by providing trusted.dyndbg='+p' and trusted.debug=1 in the kernel command-line. SELinux socket state lives in the composite LSM socket blob. sock_has_perm() and nlmsg_sock_has_extended_perms() currently dereference sk->sk_security directly, which assumes the SELinux socket blob is at offset zero. In stacked configurations that assumption does not hold. If another LSM allocates socket blob storage before SELinux, these helpers may read the wrong blob and feed invalid SID and class values into AVC checks. Use selinux_sock() instead of accessing sk->sk_security directly. 2026-04-27ima: Fix sigv3 signature handling for EVM_IMA_XATTR_DIGSIGKamlesh Kumar2-3/+5
ima_get_hash_algo() only recognizes version 2 signatures when the xattr type is EVM_IMA_XATTR_DIGSIG. Since sigv3 signatures also use EVM_IMA_XATTR_DIGSIG as the xattr type, version 3 must be accepted as well to correctly determine the hash algorithm. Additionally, ima_validate_rule() does not include IMA_SIGV3_REQUIRED in the allowed flags bitmask for MODULE_CHECK, KEXEC_KERNEL_CHECK, and KEXEC_INITRAMFS_CHECK hook functions. As a result, policy rules with "appraise_type=sigv3" are rejected for these functions. Add version 3 to the accepted versions in ima_get_hash_algo() for EVM_IMA_XATTR_DIGSIG, and add IMA_SIGV3_REQUIRED to the allowed flags for MODULE_CHECK, KEXEC_KERNEL_CHECK, and KEXEC_INITRAMFS_CHECK in ima_validate_rule(). In apparmor_path_rename(), when handling RENAME_EXCHANGE, the cond_exchange structure is supposed to carry the attributes of the *new* dentry (since it is used to authorize moving new_dentry to the old location). However, line 412 reads: vfsuid = i_uid_into_vfsuid(idmap, d_backing_inode(old_dentry)); This fetches the uid of old_dentry instead of new_dentry. As a result, the RENAME_EXCHANGE permission check uses the wrong file owner, which can allow a rename that should be denied (if old_dentry's owner has more privileges) or deny one that should be allowed. Note that cond_exchange.mode on the line above correctly uses new_dentry. Only the uid lookup is wrong. Fix by changing old_dentry to new_dentry in the i_uid_into_vfsuid call. 2026-04-15tomoyo: use u64 for holding inode->i_ino valueTetsuo Handa3-10/+8
TOMOYO is treating numeric fields (including inode->i_ino) as "unsigned long". Now that commit 0b2600f81cef ("treewide: change inode->i_ino from unsigned long to u64") went upstream, update affected portions in TOMOYO. While an administrator might write a rule that compares inode->i_ino with an immediate value, this patch changes type of variable for inode->i_ino to "u64" but does not change type of variable for the corresponding immediate value to "u64" due to the following reasons. It is likely that rules that compare inode->i_ino are for testing whether the directories involved in e.g. rename() operation are the same (i.e. comparison between two inode->i_ino values rather than one inode->i_ino value and one immediate value). The simplest portion of the fix is the creation of a new LSM hook, security_mmap_backing_file(), that is used to enforce LSM mmap() access controls on backing files in the stacked/overlayfs case. The existing security_mmap_file() does not have visibility past the user file. You can see from the associated SELinux hook callback the code is fairly straightforward. The mprotect() fix is a bit more complicated as there is no way in the mprotect() code path to inspect both the user and backing files, and bolting on a second file reference to vm_area_struct wasn't really an option. The solution taken here adds a LSM security blob and associated hooks to the backing_file struct that LSMs can use to capture and store relevant information from the user file. While the necessary SELinux information is relatively small, a single u32, I expect other LSMs to require more than that, and a dedicated backing_file LSM blob provides a storage mechanism without negatively impacting other filesystems. The first patch changes some vfs function arguments, so check that one out carefully. With this change, we may be able to shrink some inode structures. 2026-04-13proc: make PROC_MEM_FORCE_PTRACE the Kconfig defaultLinus Torvalds1-4/+2
This kconfig option was introduced 18 months ago, with the historical default of always allowing forcing memory permission overrides in order to not change any existing behavior. But it was documented as "for now", and this is a gentle nudge to people that you probably _should_ be using PROC_MEM_FORCE_PTRACE. I've had that in my local kernel config since the option was introduced. Anybody who just does "make oldconfig" will pick up their old configuration with no change, so this is still meant to not change any existing system behavior, but at least gently prod people into trying it. I'd love to get rid of FOLL_FORCE entirely (see commit 8ee74a91ac30 "proc: try to remove use of FOLL_FORCE entirely" from roughly a decade ago), but sadly that is likely not a realistic option (see commit f511c0b17b08 "Yes, people use FOLL_FORCE ;)" three weeks later). But at least let's make it more obvious that you have the choice to limit it and force people to at least be a bit more conscious about their use of FOLL_FORCE, since judging from a recent discussion people weren't even aware of this one. * Add a new access right LANDLOCK_ACCESS_FS_RESOLVE_UNIX, which controls the lookup operations for named UNIX domain sockets. The resolution happens during connect() and sendmsg() (depending on socket type). * Change access_mask_t from u16 to u32 (see below) * Hook into the path lookup in unix_find_bsd() in af_unix.c, using a LSM hook. Make policy decisions based on the new access rights * Increment the Landlock ABI version. * Minor test adaptations to keep the tests working. * Document the design rationale for scoped access rights, and cross-reference it from the header documentation. With this access right, access is granted if either of the following conditions is met: * The target socket's filesystem path was allow-listed using a LANDLOCK_RULE_PATH_BENEATH rule, *or*: * The target socket was created in the same Landlock domain in which LANDLOCK_ACCESS_FS_RESOLVE_UNIX was restricted. In case of a denial, connect() and sendmsg() return EACCES, which is the same error as it is returned if the user does not have the write bit in the traditional UNIX file system permissions of that file. The access_mask_t type grows from u16 to u32 to make space for the new access right. This also doubles the size of struct layer_access_masks from 32 byte to 64 byte. To avoid memory layout inconsistencies between architectures (especially m68k), pack and align struct access_masks [2]. Document the (possible future) interaction between scoped flags and other access rights in struct landlock_ruleset_attr, and summarize the rationale, as discussed in code review leading up to [3]. 2026-04-07lsm: Add LSM hook security_unix_findJustin Suess1-0/+20
Add an LSM hook security_unix_find. This hook is called to check the path of a named UNIX socket before a connection is initiated. The peer socket may be inspected as well. Why existing hooks are unsuitable: Existing socket hooks, security_unix_stream_connect(), security_unix_may_send(), and security_socket_connect() don't provide TOCTOU-free / namespace independent access to the paths of sockets. (1) We cannot resolve the path from the struct sockaddr in existing hooks. This requires another path lookup. A change in the path between the two lookups will cause a TOCTOU bug. (2) We cannot use the struct path from the listening socket, because it may be bound to a path in a different namespace than the caller, resulting in a path that cannot be referenced at policy creation time. Consumers of the hook wishing to reference @other are responsible for acquiring the unix_state_lock and checking for the SOCK_DEAD flag therein, ensuring the socket hasn't died since lookup. LANDLOCK_RESTRICT_SELF_TSYNC does not allow LANDLOCK_RESTRICT_SELF_LOG_SUBDOMAINS_OFF with ruleset_fd=-1, preventing a multithreaded process from atomically propagating subdomain log muting to all threads without creating a domain layer. Relax the fd=-1 condition to accept TSYNC alongside LOG_SUBDOMAINS_OFF, and update the documentation accordingly. Add flag validation tests for all TSYNC combinations with ruleset_fd=-1, and audit tests verifying both transition directions: muting via TSYNC (logged to not logged) and override via TSYNC (not logged to logged). hook_cred_transfer() only copies the Landlock security blob when the source credential has a domain. This is inconsistent with landlock_restrict_self() which can set LOG_SUBDOMAINS_OFF on a credential without creating a domain (via the ruleset_fd=-1 path): the field is committed but not preserved across fork() because the child's prepare_creds() calls hook_cred_transfer() which skips the copy when domain is NULL. This breaks the documented use case where a process mutes subdomain logs before forking sandboxed children: the children lose the muting and their domains produce unexpected audit records. Fix this by unconditionally copying the Landlock credential blob. 2026-04-05mm: convert do_brk_flags() to use vma_flags_tLorenzo Stoakes (Oracle)1-1/+3
In order to be able to do this, we need to change VM_DATA_DEFAULT_FLAGS and friends and update the architecture-specific definitions also. We then have to update some KSM logic to handle VMA flags, and introduce VMA_STACK_FLAGS to define the vma_flags_t equivalent of VM_STACK_FLAGS. We also introduce two helper functions for use during the time we are converting legacy flags to vma_flags_t values - vma_flags_to_legacy() and legacy_to_vma_flags(). This enables us to iteratively make changes to break these changes up into separate parts. We use these explicitly here to keep VM_STACK_FLAGS around for certain users which need to maintain the legacy vm_flags_t values for the time being. We are no longer able to rely on the simple VM_xxx being set to zero if the feature is not enabled, so in the case of VM_DROPPABLE we introduce VMA_DROPPABLE as the vma_flags_t equivalent, which is set to EMPTY_VMA_FLAGS if the droppable flag is not available. While we're here, we make the description of do_brk_flags() into a kdoc comment, as it almost was already. We use vma_flags_to_legacy() to not need to update the vm_get_page_prot() logic as this time. Note that in create_init_stack_vma() we have to replace the BUILD_BUG_ON() with a VM_WARN_ON_ONCE() as the tested values are no longer build time available. We also update mprotect_fixup() to use VMA flags where possible, though we have to live with a little duplication between vm_flags_t and vma_flags_t values for the time being until further conversions are made. While we're here, update VM_SPECIAL to be defined in terms of VMA_SPECIAL_FLAGS now we have vma_flags_to_legacy(). Finally, we update the VMA tests to reflect these changes. The existing SELinux security model for overlayfs is to allow access if the current task is able to access the top level file (the "user" file) and the mounter's credentials are sufficient to access the lower level file (the "backing" file). Unfortunately, the current code does not properly enforce these access controls for both mmap() and mprotect() operations on overlayfs filesystems. This patch makes use of the newly created security_mmap_backing_file() LSM hook to provide the missing backing file enforcement for mmap() operations, and leverages the backing file API and new LSM blob to provide the necessary information to properly enforce the mprotect() access controls. Stacked filesystems such as overlayfs do not currently provide the necessary mechanisms for LSMs to properly enforce access controls on the mmap() and mprotect() operations. In order to resolve this gap, a LSM security blob is being added to the backing_file struct and the following new LSM hooks are being created: security_backing_file_alloc() security_backing_file_free() security_mmap_backing_file() The first two hooks are to manage the lifecycle of the LSM security blob in the backing_file struct, while the third provides a new mmap() access control point for the underlying backing file. It is also expected that LSMs will likely want to update their security_file_mprotect() callback to address issues with their mprotect() controls, but that does not require a change to the security_file_mprotect() LSM hook. There are a three other small changes to support these new LSM hooks: * Pass the user file associated with a backing file down to alloc_empty_backing_file() so it can be included in the security_backing_file_alloc() hook. * Add getter and setter functions for the backing_file struct LSM blob as the backing_file struct remains private to fs/file_table.c. * Constify the file struct field in the LSM common_audit_data struct to better support LSMs that need to pass a const file struct pointer into the common LSM audit code. When running in an unprivileged domU under Xen, the privcmd driver is restricted to allow only hypercalls against a target domain, for which the current domU is acting as a device model. Add a boot parameter "unrestricted" to allow all hypercalls (the hypervisor will still refuse destructive hypercalls affecting other guests). Make this new parameter effective only in case the domU wasn't started using secure boot, as otherwise hypercalls targeting the domU itself might result in violating the secure boot functionality. This is achieved by adding another lockdown reason, which can be tested to not being set when applying the "unrestricted" option. 2026-03-17ima: remove buggy support for asynchronous hashesEric Biggers1-373/+9
IMA computes hashes using the crypto_shash or crypto_ahash API. The latter is used only when ima.ahash_minsize is set on the command line, and its purpose is ostensibly to make the hash computation faster. However, going off the CPU to a crypto engine and back again is actually quite slow, especially compared with the acceleration that is built into modern CPUs and the kernel now enables by default for most algorithms. Typical performance results for SHA-256 on a modern platform can be found at https://lore.kernel.org/linux-crypto/20250615184638.GA1480@sol/ Partly for this reason, several other kernel subsystems have already dropped support for the crypto_ahash API. The other problem with crypto_ahash is that bugs are also common, not just in the underlying drivers, but also in the code using it, since it is very difficult to use correctly. Just from a quick review, here are some of the bugs I noticed in IMA's ahash code: - [Use after free] ima_alloc_atfm() isn't thread-safe and can trigger a use-after-free if multiple threads try to initialize the global ima_ahash_tfm at the same time. - [Deadlock] If only one buffer is allocated and there is an error reading from the file, then ahash_wait() is executed twice, causing a deadlock in wait_for_completion(). - [Crash or incorrect hash computed] calc_buffer_ahash_atfm() is sometimes passed stack buffers which can be vmalloc addresses, but it puts them in a scatterlist assuming they are linear addresses. This causes the hashing to be done on the wrong physical address. - [Truncation to 32-bit length] ima_alloc_pages() incorrectly assumes an loff_t value fits in an unsigned long. calc_buffer_ahash_atfm() incorrectly assumes that a loff_t value fits in an unsigned int. So, not exactly a great track record so far, even disregarding driver bugs which are an even larger problem. Fortunately, in practice it's unlikely that many users are actually setting the ima.ahash_minsize kernel command-line parameter which enables this code. However, given that this code is almost certainly no longer useful (if it ever was), let's just remove it instead of attempting to fix all these issues. This should have no effect on 64-bit hosts, and allow things to continue working on 32-bit hosts in the cases where the i_ino fits in 32-bits. 2026-03-10landlock: Clean up interrupted thread logic in TSYNCYihan Ding1-7/+13
In landlock_restrict_sibling_threads(), when the calling thread is interrupted while waiting for sibling threads to prepare, it executes a recovery path. Previously, this path included a wait_for_completion() call on all_prepared to prevent a Use-After-Free of the local shared_ctx. However, this wait is redundant. Exiting the main do-while loop already leads to a bottom cleanup section that unconditionally waits for all_finished. Therefore, replacing the wait with a simple break is safe, prevents UAF, and correctly unblocks the remaining task_works. Clean up the error path by breaking the loop and updating the surrounding comments to accurately reflect the state machine. 2026-03-10landlock: Serialize TSYNC thread restrictionYihan Ding1-1/+11
syzbot found a deadlock in landlock_restrict_sibling_threads(). When multiple threads concurrently call landlock_restrict_self() with sibling thread restriction enabled, they can deadlock by mutually queueing task_works on each other and then blocking in kernel space (waiting for the other to finish). Fix this by serializing the TSYNC operations within the same process using the exec_update_lock. This prevents concurrent invocations from deadlocking. We use down_write_trylock() and restart the syscall if the lock cannot be acquired immediately. This ensures that if a thread fails to get the lock, it will return to userspace, allowing it to process any pending TSYNC task_works from the lock holder, and then transparently restart the syscall. AppArmor was putting the reference to i_private data on its end after removing the original entry from the file system. However the inode can aand does live beyond that point and it is possible that some of the fs call back functions will be invoked after the reference has been put, which results in a race between freeing the data and accessing it through the fs. While the rawdata/loaddata is the most likely candidate to fail the race, as it has the fewest references. If properly crafted it might be possible to trigger a race for the other types stored in i_private. Fix this by moving the put of i_private referenced data to the correct place which is during inode eviction. There is a race condition that leads to a use-after-free situation: because the rawdata inodes are not refcounted, an attacker can start open()ing one of the rawdata files, and at the same time remove the last reference to this rawdata (by removing the corresponding profile, for example), which frees its struct aa_loaddata; as a result, when seq_rawdata_open() is reached, i_private is a dangling pointer and freed memory is accessed. The rawdata inodes weren't refcounted to avoid a circular refcount and were supposed to be held by the profile rawdata reference. However during profile removal there is a window where the vfs and profile destruction race, resulting in the use after free. Fix this by moving to a double refcount scheme. Where the profile refcount on rawdata is used to break the circular dependency. Allowing for freeing of the rawdata once all inode references to the rawdata are put. Differential encoding allows loops to be created if it is abused. To prevent this the unpack should verify that a diff-encode chain terminates. Unfortunately the differential encode verification had two bugs. 1. it conflated states that had gone through check and already been marked, with states that were currently being checked and marked. This means that loops in the current chain being verified are treated as a chain that has already been verified. 2. the order bailout on already checked states compared current chain check iterators j,k instead of using the outer loop iterator i. Meaning a step backwards in states in the current chain verification was being mistaken for moving to an already verified state. Move to a double mark scheme where already verified states get a different mark, than the current chain being kept. This enables us to also drop the backwards verification check that was the cause of the second error as any already verified state is already marked. An unprivileged local user can load, replace, and remove profiles by opening the apparmorfs interfaces, via a confused deputy attack, by passing the opened fd to a privileged process, and getting the privileged process to write to the interface. This does require a privileged target that can be manipulated to do the write for the unprivileged process, but once such access is achieved full policy management is possible and all the possible implications that implies: removing confinement, DoS of system or target applications by denying all execution, by-passing the unprivileged user namespace restriction, to exploiting kernel bugs for a local privilege escalation. The policy management interface can not have its permissions simply changed from 0666 to 0600 because non-root processes need to be able to load policy to different policy namespaces. Instead ensure the task writing the interface has privileges that are a subset of the task that opened the interface. This is already done via policy for confined processes, but unconfined can delegate access to the opened fd, by-passing the usual policy check. Add the digest_size field to the ima_algo_desc structure to determine the digest size from the correct source. If the hash algorithm is among allocated PCR banks, take the value from the TPM bank info (equal to the value from the crypto subsystem if the TPM algorithm is supported by it; otherwise, not exceding the size of the digest buffer in the tpm_digest structure, used by IMA). If the hash algorithm is SHA1, use the predefined value. Lastly, if the hash algorithm is the default one but not among the PCR banks, take the digest size from the crypto subsystem (the default hash algorithm is checked when parsing the ima_hash= command line option). 2026-03-06treewide: change inode->i_ino from unsigned long to u64Jeff Layton6-20/+20
On 32-bit architectures, unsigned long is only 32 bits wide, which causes 64-bit inode numbers to be silently truncated. Several filesystems (NFS, XFS, BTRFS, etc.) can generate inode numbers that exceed 32 bits, and this truncation can lead to inode number collisions and other subtle bugs on 32-bit systems. Change the type of inode->i_ino from unsigned long to u64 to ensure that inode numbers are always represented as 64-bit values regardless of architecture. Update all format specifiers treewide from %lu/%lx to %llu/%llx to match the new type, along with corresponding local variable types. This is the bulk treewide conversion. Earlier patches in this series handled trace events separately to allow trace field reordering for better struct packing on 32-bit. Thus when d_make_persistent() is called the dentry will already be hashed. d_make_persistent() handles this case. If task_work_add() failed, ctx->task is put but the tsync_works struct is not reset to its previous state. The first consequence is that the kernel allocates memory for dying threads, which could lead to user-accounted memory exhaustion (not very useful nor specific to this case). The second consequence is that task_work_cancel(), called by cancel_tsync_works(), can dereference a NULL task pointer. Fix this issues by keeping a consistent works->size wrt the added task work. This is done in a new tsync_works_trim() helper which also cleans up the shared_ctx and work fields. As a safeguard, add a pointer check to cancel_tsync_works() and update tsync_works_release() accordingly. apparmor_getprocattr() incorrectly calls task_ctx(current) instead of task_ctx(task) when retrieving prev and exec attributes, returning the caller's labels rather than the target's. Fix by passing task to task_ctx(). The issue can be reproduced when a process with an onexec transition (e.g., configured by a container runtime) is inspected via /proc/<pid>/attr/apparmor/exec. The reader's own value is returned instead of the target's. This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next line. Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial. So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed' scripts. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) Smatch static checker warning: security/apparmor/policy_unpack.c:966 unpack_pdb() warn: unsigned 'unpack_tags(e, &pdb->tags, info)' is never less than zero. unpack_tags() is declared with return type size_t (unsigned) but returns negative errno values on failure. The caller in unpack_pdb() tests the return with `< 0`, which is always false for an unsigned type, making error handling dead code. Malformed tag data would be silently accepted instead of causing a load failure. Change return type of unpack_tags() from size_t to int to match the functions's actual semantic. On an allmodconfig kernel the number of false positive context tracking Sparse warnings grows to over 5,200... On the plus side of the balance actual locking bugs found by Sparse context analysis is also rather ... sparse: I found only 3 such commits in the last 3 years. So the rate of false positives and the maintenance overhead is rather high and there appears to be no active policy in place to achieve a zero-warnings baseline to move the annotations & fixers to developers who introduce new code. Clang context analysis is more complete and more aggressive in trying to find bugs, at least in principle. Plus it has a different model to enabling it: it's enabled subsystem by subsystem, which results in zero warnings on all relevant kernel builds (as far as our testing managed to cover it). Which allowed us to enable it by default, similar to other compiler warnings, with the expectation that there are no warnings going forward. This enforces a zero-warnings baseline on clang-22+ builds (Which are still limited in distribution, admittedly) Hopefully the Clang approach can lead to a more maintainable zero-warnings status quo and policy, with more and more subsystems and drivers enabling the feature. Context tracking can be enabled for all kernel code via WARN_CONTEXT_ANALYSIS_ALL=y (default disabled), but this will generate a lot of false positives. 2026-02-10landlock: Transpose the layer masks data structureGünther Noack9-340/+271
The layer masks data structure tracks the requested but unfulfilled access rights during an operation's security check. It stores one bit for each combination of access right and layer index. If the bit is set, that access right is not granted (yet) in the given layer and we have to traverse the path further upwards to grant it. Previously, the layer masks were stored as arrays mapping from access right indices to layer_mask_t. The layer_mask_t value then indicates all layers in which the given access right is still (tentatively) denied. This patch introduces struct layer_access_masks instead: This struct contains an array with the access_mask_t of each (tentatively) denied access right in that layer. The hypothesis of this patch is that this simplifies the code enough so that the resulting code will run faster: * We can use bitwise operations in multiple places where we previously looped over bits individually with macros. (Should require less branch speculation and lends itself to better loop unrolling.) * Code is ~75 lines smaller. Other noteworthy changes: * In no_more_access(), call a new helper function may_refer(), which only solves the asymmetric case. Previously, the code interleaved the checks for the two symmetric cases in RENAME_EXCHANGE. It feels that the code is clearer when renames without RENAME_EXCHANGE are more obviously the normal case. Tradeoffs: This change improves performance, at a slight size increase to the layer masks data structure. This fixes the size of the data structure at 32 bytes for all types of access rights. (64, once we introduce a 17th filesystem access right). For filesystem access rights, at the moment, the data structure has the same size as before, but once we introduce the 17th filesystem access right, it will double in size (from 32 to 64 bytes), as access_mask_t grows from 16 to 32 bit [1]. Add errata section with code examples for querying errata and a warning that most applications should not check errata. Use kernel-doc directives to include errata descriptions from the header files instead of manual links. Also enhance existing DOC sections in security/landlock/errata/abi-*.h files with Impact sections, and update the code comment in syscalls.c to remind developers to update errata documentation when applicable. This addresses the gap where the kernel implements errata tracking but provides no user-facing documentation on how to use it, while improving the existing technical documentation in-place rather than duplicating it. Introduce the LANDLOCK_RESTRICT_SELF_TSYNC flag. With this flag, a given Landlock ruleset is applied to all threads of the calling process, instead of only the current one. Without this flag, multithreaded userspace programs currently resort to using the nptl(7)/libpsx hack for multithreaded policy enforcement, which is also used by libcap and for setuid(2). Using this userspace-based scheme, the threads of a process enforce the same Landlock policy, but the resulting Landlock domains are still separate. The domains being separate causes multiple problems: * When using Landlock's "scoped" access rights, the domain identity is used to determine whether an operation is permitted. As a result, when using LANLDOCK_SCOPE_SIGNAL, signaling between sibling threads stops working. This is a problem for programming languages and frameworks which are inherently multithreaded (e.g. Go). * In audit logging, the domains of separate threads in a process will get logged with different domain IDs, even when they are based on the same ruleset FD, which might confuse users. Add .kunitconfig file to the AppArmor directory to enable easy execution of KUnit tests. AppArmor tests (CONFIG_SECURITY_APPARMOR_KUNIT_TEST) depend on CONFIG_SECURITY_APPARMOR which also depends on CONFIG_SECURITY and CONFIG_NET. Without explicitly enabling these configs in the .kunitconfig, developers will need to specify config manually. The wrapping key does not exist by default and is generated by the hypervisor as a part of PKWM initialization. This key is then persisted by the hypervisor and is used to wrap trusted keys. These are variable length symmetric keys, which in the case of PowerVM Key Wrapping Module (PKWM) are generated using the kernel RNG. 2026-01-29lsm: preserve /proc/sys/vm/mmap_min_addr when !CONFIG_SECURITYPaul Moore3-18/+3
While reworking the LSM initialization code the /proc/sys/vm/mmap_min_addr handler was inadvertently caught up in the change and the procfs entry wasn't setup when CONFIG_SECURITY was not selected at kernel build time. This patch restores the previous behavior and ensures that the procfs entry is setup regardless of the CONFIG_SECURITY state. Future work will improve upon this, likely by moving the procfs handler into the mm subsystem, but this patch should resolve the immediate regression. The buffer hold is a measure of contention, but it is tracked per cpu where the lock is a globabl resource. On some systems (eg. real time) there is no guarantee that the code will be on the same cpu pre, and post spinlock acquisition, nor that the buffer will be put back to the same percpu cache when we are done with it. Because of this the hold value can move asynchronous to the buffers on the cache, meaning it is possible to underflow, and potentially in really pathelogical cases overflow. When aa_get_buffer() pulls from the per-cpu list it unconditionally decrements cache->hold. If hold reaches 0 while count is still non-zero, the unsigned decrement wraps to UINT_MAX. This keeps hold non-zero for a very long time, so aa_put_buffer() never returns buffers to the global list, which can starve other CPUs and force repeated kmalloc(aa_g_path_max) allocations. Guard the decrement so hold never underflows. This patch doesn't change current functionality, it switches the two uses of the in_ns fns and macros into the two semantically different cases they are used for. xxx_in_scope for checking mediation interaction between profiles xxx_in_view to determine which profiles are visible.The scope will always be a subset of the view as profiles that can not see each other can not interact. The split can not be completely done for label_match because it has to distinct uses matching permission against label in scope, and checking if a transition to a profile is allowed. The transition to a profile can include profiles that are in view but not in scope, so retain this distinction as a parameter. While at the moment the two uses are very similar, in the future there will be additional differences. So make sure the semantics differences are present in the code. Add support for the per permission tag index for a given permission set. This will be used by both meta-data tagging, to allow annotating accept states with context and debug information. As well as by rule tainting and triggers to specify the taint or trigger to be applied. Since these are low frequency ancillary data items they are stored in a tighter packed format to that allows for sharing and reuse of the strings between permissions and accept states. Reducing the amount of kernel memory use at the cost of having to go through a couple if index based indirections. The tags are just strings that has no meaning with out context. When used as meta-data for auditing and debugging its entirely information for userspace, but triggers, and tainting can be used to affect the domain. Commit 8e5d9f916a96 ("smack: deduplicate xattr setting in smack_inode_init_security()") introduced xattr_dupval() to simplify setting the xattrs to be provided by the SMACK LSM on inode creation, in the smack_inode_init_security(). Unfortunately, moving lsm_get_xattr_slot() caused the SMACK64TRANSMUTE xattr be added in the array of new xattrs before SMACK64. This causes the HMAC of xattrs calculated by evm_init_hmac() for new files to diverge from the one calculated by both evm_calc_hmac_or_hash() and evmctl. evm_init_hmac() calculates the HMAC of the xattrs of new files based on the order LSMs provide them, while evm_calc_hmac_or_hash() and evmctl calculate the HMAC based on an ordered xattrs list. Fix the issue by making evm_init_hmac() calculate the HMAC of new files based on the ordered xattrs list too.
