700s-server

Embassy University's online server inspired by 700 Software's server setup and customized Node.js webserver

To take an on-instance snapshot. (backup against file deletions and mistakes etc., but not as good as backing up to a separate instance)

sudo zfs snap -r rpool/700s@`date +%Y-%m-%d-%H%M%S`

To take a backup of the packages area (e.g. doing a risky pkgin upgrade)

sudo zfs snap rpool/opt-local@`date +%Y-%m-%d-%H%M%S`

Expanding disk capacity

(I don't think you can shrink it without rebuilding the instance. You can always attach it as a new pool if you want to make it more removable)

To increase the size of the rpool

  1. In AWS, identify the volume that is the current volume of your instance and take a snapshot of it just in case something wierd happens and you can't bring the box back up.

  2. Create a new volume (probably general purpose SSD) with the desired capacity.

  3. Attach your new volume to this running EC2 instance. (Device defaults to /dev/sdf.)

  4. On the box, attach the new volume to the rpool.

    Example (as root)

  5. Detaching the original smaller volume

    (after waiting for resilver to complete... monitor that with zpool status)

    zpool detach rpool c1t0d0 
  6. Shut down the instance (can be done with AWS right click and Stop)

    (Not terminate! In fact you should have termination protection enabled)

  7. After shutdown finishes you can detach the original root volume

  8. Then detach the larger volume and reattach it as root (Device /dev/xvda)

  9. Bring up the Instance. Boom! We have more disk space.

  10. Before making a major version upgrade or any upgrade that requires a new boot environment you'll have to follow the instructions [fixing root labeled] (currently in server-setup.sh document)
