Robot-In-The-Loop (RITL)

This badge signifies that this project was implemented in collaboration with one or more coding agents.

It's not meant as a badge of honor, or of shame - its purpose is more related to transparency, security, provenance, and trust. There may be some who consider agentic coding to be an expressionn of laziness, or inexperience. We don't really care about them.

Agentic coding (a more professional and less cringe-y term than "vibe coding") is, for many people, an indispensable part of their workflow. By displaying this badge:

(i) we promote the normalization of AI-assisted coding as something that is practiced by both experienced engineers and those writing their very first "Goodybe, World" program;

(ii) we improve transparency and trust in the software that we produce, first by being open about the methods used to build it, and second by providing a partial record of co-authorship that may be relevant in resolving a variety of different incidents;

The issues that are most salient when we think about such "incidents" include:

(iii) security - adoption of this badge is a recognition of the fact that coding agents are already, for many people, writing and committing most of the code that they ship and, in some cases, even signing it with the user's signing key. This raises difficult questions relating to trust.

(iv) attribution - attributing soure code is hard enough - it's unsettling to think of the complications that arise when code is authored, published, ingested as training data, and mixed with the work of 1,000 other authors so that an agent can perform the tasks that it's trained to do.

This badge helps bring attention to these matters.

You are invited to adopt this badge for whatever purpose you see fit.
