Subdomain title on header now uses font from PHP logo (Handel Gothic - Included as webfont).

Isn't there a licensing issue using that font?
Do you know how that works? Whom can we request permission to use it?

I really like the idea btw.

It would be a problem if the font has licensing restrictions because as far as I can see we're using this font in our logo already. I also fully supports this change, it looks better than now.

Font is licensed but as Sobak said, it is already used in PHP logo, so I assume that php group owns rights to use it.

Having a license to use a font in the creation of a logo is an entirely different thing to distributing the font files on the web.

Could you include the LICENSE file that you got with this font to ensure that we are indeed allowed to use these files?

In that case it would be just better (and easier :D) to use some similar but open font. Ubuntu looks quite good in my opinion:

Licensing one of the Handel Gothic's as a web font is likely going to be prohibitively expensive. Most providers provide a license based on a number of page views, which for php.net is going to be… a lot.

For example; fonts.com would be £35/mo limited to 1,000,000 page views (with a wide font range). myfonts.com is £92.51 for 1,000,000 page views. The latter is just for one style within the family (ITC Handel Gothic Std Medium)! Lots of places won't even offer a license for hosting the files ourselves.

Unless we can come to an agreement with one of the providers, it will be much more cost-effective to skip the web font approach and create images (I like SVG) as needed. "Desktop" licensing is far, far less expensive.

I admit, it would be nice to have the sub-site names matching, or at least fitting very neatly with, the PHP logo. I'm totally open to suggestion!

Surely someone created the font and we could license it directly rather then a middleman?
I don't quite understand how the whole font licensing works, which is why I'm asking :)

Are there two players that own it and can license it at will at any price they so choose?
