Hey @eliw00d, I appreciate the contribution, but the current maintained stable release is 16.1.

In line with our support policy (https://nextjs.org/support-policy), we won't produce new releases for 16.0 unless there's a critical security release. We only support the latest minor version of any major version.

This is a very straightforward backport of #86653 and #89175, and it seems very safe, so I'll make an exception here and go ahead and merge this into the backport branch, but please know that there are no planned future releases of 16.0.x, and this change will not go out unless it ships alongside a critical security update.

If there are issues discovered with this change during the release of a future security update, this PR may be reverted without notice.
