With KLIA cementing its role as a regional air cargo and transshipment hub, this is exactly the kind of strategic location our industry needs to build stronger logistics connectivity across the region. We're now positioned to plug directly into the wider air cargo network, supporting the movement of goods between Malaysia, Indonesia, and beyond. Air Cargo Should Not Be Burdened by Unclear Costs Indonesia’s air cargo industry needs more than competitive rates. It needs a clear, transparent and predictable cost structure. On August 26, 2026, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa called for faster standardization of air cargo cost components and synchronization of business processes following concerns raised by Asperindo. The issue matters because air cargo is not simply about the cost of flying goods. Cargo may pass through security screening, terminal handling, regulated agents, ground handling and other airport-related services before reaching the aircraft. Each service may be necessary, but every charge should have a clear function and calculation. One concern raised by Asperindo is the difference in volumetric weight calculations between airlines. For logistics companies, this is not merely a technical matter. A different calculation can directly change the chargeable weight and therefore the final logistics bill. For SMEs, especially those shipping products between islands, these additional costs can significantly affect competitiveness. This is why the government’s planned standardization is important. The goal should not be to control every commercial price. Airlines and service providers need room to compete. What needs to be standardized is the process, cost components and calculation principles, so businesses know exactly what they are paying for. Indonesia already has a regulatory foundation through PM No. 33 of 2021 on Airport Business Activities and Director General of Civil Aviation Decision PR-DJPU No. 20 of 2025 concerning cargo and mail security screening. The next challenge is implementation. We need airlines, airport operators, ground handlers, regulated agents, freight forwarders, logistics companies and cargo owners to look at the issue together. Because air cargo is part of an end-to-end supply chain. A shipment does not begin at the airport and does not end when the aircraft lands. It moves from warehouse to truck, terminal, aircraft and eventually to the customer. So the real question should be: How much does it cost from warehouse to warehouse, and how much time does the entire process take? For Indonesia, this is particularly important for remote and outermost regions where air transport can be essential for connectivity. High logistics costs are already a challenge. Unclear logistics costs make planning even harder. Indonesia needs an air cargo system that is safe, efficient and commercially sustainable—but also transparent and predictable.
