📰 Under the Market Lens | Edition #87 The RBI quietly opened a window in June to attract dollars from Indians living abroad. By August 21, $73 billion had come in. The scheme wasn't supposed to close until September 30. The RBI shut it down a month early, because it got what it wanted faster than planned. Here's what made it work. The RBI told banks: hand us your foreign currency deposits, we'll absorb the currency risk. That single change let banks offer NRIs interest rates of 5.5% to 7.1%, the best in over a decade. Money followed. For context, a similar scheme in 2013, during a genuine rupee crisis, brought in $26 billion over three months. This one pulled in nearly three times that, in less time, without a crisis. And yet the rupee barely moved. Because none of this money hit the open market, it went straight into RBI's reserves. But there's a bill attached. The RBI has promised to return these dollars when deposits mature in three to five years.
