Vineet Patawari reposted thisA friend recently asked me a very common question. “I got a Rs. 5 lakh bonus. I still have a Rs. 25 lakh home loan at 8.5%, with 20 years left. Should I prepay the loan or invest the money?” My first response was simple: let’s look at the numbers. If he prepays Rs. 5 lakh, the loan could finish in about 12.5 years instead of 20. He could save roughly Rs. 14.5 lakh in interest and get rid of around 90 EMIs. Sounds like an easy decision. But then comes the other side. What if he invests that Rs. 5 lakh at 12% instead? The numbers change quite a bit. Prepay the loan, then invest the Rs. 21,696 EMI after the loan ends → around Rs. 31 lakh. Invest Rs. 5 lakh today and keep the loan running → around Rs. 48 lakh after 20 years. That is a difference of roughly Rs. 17 lakh. So, should you always invest instead of prepaying? Not necessarily. The Rs. 48 lakh assumes you actually earn 12%. The 8.5% saving from prepayment is certain. And that is where the real decision starts. Before you choose, look at four things. Do you have a six-month emergency fund? Do you have a long enough investment horizon to handle market volatility? Will prepayment affect the home-loan tax benefits available to you? And perhaps most importantly, how comfortable are you carrying the debt? If you have stable income, an emergency fund, a long horizon and can handle volatility, investing may make sense. If you value certainty and being debt-free gives you peace of mind, prepaying may be the better choice. So don’t simply compare 8.5% with 12%. Compare return, risk, liquidity, taxes and peace of mind. Because the mathematically better option isn’t always the better option for you.

I find that interesting because we often think confidence and self-doubt are opposites. They aren't. You can doubt a decision and still trust your ability to make one. I think this matters a lot in investing. We tend to give experts more weight than they probably deserve. You can spend days researching a company, understand the business, study the numbers and build your thesis. Then an expert says, “I don't like this stock.” And suddenly, you start questioning your own research. I've done this too. But someone else's conviction isn't automatically better than yours because they have a bigger platform or a better title. They may have a different entry price, time horizon, thesis or incentives. This doesn't mean we shouldn't listen to experts. We should. But use their views to challenge your thinking, not replace it. Most professional fund managers don't consistently beat their benchmarks over long periods. Buffett has made this point repeatedly through his argument around random stock selection and professional investors. So do your own work. Read. Explore different sectors. Understand businesses. Build your thesis. Talk to people who disagree with you. And if the facts support your thesis, have the courage to stand by it. You can have self-doubt and still have conviction. In fact, I think the best investors need both. Because it's very difficult to make money on someone else's conviction. At some point, you have to build your own.

You can't understand a company only by looking at its financial statements. - You need to understand the industry, the economy, technology, regulation, competition and sometimes even what is happening in another country. - A sugar company, a cement company, an IT company and an AI business can all have completely different drivers of growth, costs and profitability. Then comes the part investors often underestimate: human psychology. "We buy when everyone is excited. We sell when everyone is scared." So understanding markets also means understanding people. This is why Charlie Munger's multidisciplinary approach to investing was so powerful. His idea was to build a “latticework” of mental models from different disciplines rather than rely on one way of thinking. Specialize in your profession but don't specialize your thinking. Read outside your field. Learn about businesses you don't understand. Follow subjects that have nothing to do with your day job. Because the goal isn't to know everything. It's to have enough different mental models to recognize when the obvious answer isn't the right one. What do you think?

Vineet Patawari reposted thisIndia’s EV market may be closer to an inflection point than we think. From FY20 to 2024, around 2 lakh electric four-wheelers were sold in India. Then 2025 alone saw another 2 lakh. And 2026 is estimated to reach around 4 lakh. What took years is now happening in a fraction of the time. That’s the part I find interesting. India is still at only around 6-8% EV penetration, while China is already close to 50%. And this isn’t just about passenger cars. EV adoption is expected to accelerate across commercial vehicles too, with e-LCVs and e-MHCVs among the fastest-growing segments. Why now? High oil import dependence, rising crude prices, stronger government support, better EV economics and increasing model availability are all pushing in the same direction. So the question is no longer whether India will adopt EVs. For me, the more interesting question is what happens when adoption moves from early stages to mass adoption. Because when the curve starts bending, the opportunity is rarely limited to the obvious players. It spreads across the ecosystem. India may be early in EV adoption. But it may not be early for much longer.

Because interviews are unusually perfect situations. The candidate is prepared. The questions are predictable. Everyone is on their best behaviour. But that's not what work looks like. So over the years, I've become less interested in perfect answers and more interested in finding clues to five things. What happens when there are no instructions? Do they wait, or can they figure out the next step themselves? What happens when they make a mistake? Do they explain it away, or own it and start fixing it? What happens when they don't know something? Do they bluff, or are they comfortable saying, "I don't know, but I'll find out"? What happens when things change? Can they unlearn yesterday's answer quickly enough to find a better one today? And perhaps the most important one. What happens when nobody is watching? Because that's where ownership actually shows up. A resume can tell me what someone has done. An interview can tell me how well they have prepared. But neither automatically tells me how they will behave when the work becomes uncertain, inconvenient or difficult. She has always brought a certain warmth and instinct to everything she does, which perhaps explains why hospitality comes so naturally to her. Even within the family, we play very different roles. Paroma is often the heart of it, the one who brings people together and remembers the things the rest of us forget. I probably operate rather differently. But maybe that is what makes being twins interesting. You can be completely different people, choose very different paths, and still have an understanding that does not need too much explaining.
