Applicants residing in a municipality other than those served by the LASD need to contact their local police department and apply for a CCW license with them.

Applicants that were issued a license from another agency,must renew their CCW license with that agency. If an applicant has since moved to a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department jurisdiction, the applicant may apply as a “New Concealed Carry Weapon License” applicant.

General Information
Learning the laws regulating the use of firearms is a must for responsible ownership. Local regulations differ and laws vary from state to state. Citizens must check with the jurisdiction where the firearm is to be used.
In California, the Sheriffs and their staff are required to follow strict state and local guidelines when performing the necessary background checks for issuing Concealed Carry Weapon licenses. Due to the detailed nature involved with conducting these background checks, appointment times and processing times can take multiple weeks. During the application process, the applicant will be asked to schedule an interview appointment for a new Concealed Carry Weapon license.
NOTICE FOR RENEWAL: If the applicant is RENEWING a Concealed Carry Weapon license in Los Angeles County, they may not apply until 90 days before the expiration date listed on their current Concealed Carry Weapon license. These will be processed in the order they were submitted. You may track the progress/status of your order using the Order Tracker.

Concealed Carry Weapon License Requirements: must meet ALL requirements
Authority
California Penal Code sections 26150 and 26155 provide that a Sheriff of a county or the Chief or other head of municipal police department of any city, or city and county, shall issue or renew a license to carry a pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person (Concealed Carry Weapon license).
Who Shall be Issued a License
The licensing authority specified in Penal Code sections 26150 and 26155 shall issue a license to persons who are not a disqualified person to receive such a license, as determined in accordance with the standards set forth in Penal Code 26202, meet residential requirements, and have completed a course of training. All applicants for a Concealed Carry Weapon license will be fingerprinted and state and federal records will be checked to determine if they are eligible to possess firearms. Completing the Application
California Penal Code sections 26150 and 26155 provide that a sheriff of a county or the chief or other head of a municipal police department of any city or city and county shall issue a license to carry a pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person (CCW license). Penal Code section 26175 requires the Attorney General to prescribe a statewide standard application form for a CCW license. Answering all the questions on the Application does not guarantee the issuance of a Concealed Weapon Permit. The determination whether to issue the license is at the discretion of the licensing authority. Pursuant to California Penal Code section 26160, each licensing authority will have a written policy summarizing their requirements for issuance of a Concealed Weapon Permit. In addition, prior to issuing a Concealed Weapon Permit, the California State Statutes require proof that:
- The applicant is not a disqualified person to receive such a license, as determined in accordance with the standards set forth in Penal Code 26202;
- The applicant is at least 21 years of age, and presents clear evidence of the person’s identity and age, as defined in Penal Code 16400;
- The applicant is a resident of that city or city and county. The presumption of residency in the county or city within the county may be rebutted by satisfactory evidence that the applicant’s primary residence is in another county or city within the county;
- The course of training prescribed by the licensing authority has been completed.
- The applicant is the recorded owner, with the Department of Justice, of the pistol, revolver, or other firearm for which the license will be issued.
Prior to Filling Out This Application
- Be prepared to scan a copy of your Valid California Driver’s License or California ID Card (an ID card will only be accepted if you do not possess a driver’s license from another state).
- Original U.S. Birth Certificate or Certificate of Naturalization, Permanent Resident Card, or Valid U.S. Passport (If you were born outside the United States).
- Utility Bill (water, electricity, gas, cable/internet, or waste) – must be in the applicant’s name; bill must reflect service address as listed on your DMV, no disconnections notices. NO EXCEPTIONS. If the utility bill is in your spouse’s/domestic partner’s name, you will need to provide a marriage certificate or declaration of legal domestic partnership.
- (Military only) DD-214/orders.

- If you do not possess a Real ID and your driver's license or identification card states "FEDERAL LIMITS APPLY," you must upload one of the following documents:
- Valid, unexpired U.S. passport
- Certified copy of U.S. birth certificate
- Certificate of Birth Abroad
- Certified copy of birth certificate from a U.S. Territory
- Certificate of Naturalization or U.S. Citizenship
- Valid, unexpired Permanent Resident Card
- If you do not possess a Real ID and your driver's license or identification card states "FEDERAL LIMITS APPLY," you must upload one of the following documents:
- Be prepared to scan a copy of your Valid California Driver's License or California ID Card (an ID card will only be accepted if you do not posses a driver's license from another state)
- Original U.S. Birth Certificate or Certificate of Naturalization, Permanent Resident Card, or valid U.S. Passport (if you were born outside of the United States).
- Utility Bill (water, electricity, gas, cable/internet, or waste) - must be in the applicant's name; have the current service address; and cannot be past due. NO EXCEPTIONS. If utility bill is in your spouse's name we will accept them with proof of marriage or legal domestic partnership
- (Military only) DD-214/orders

Non-California Resident Applicants
Prior to issuing a Concealed Weapon Permit, the California State Statutes require proof that:
- The applicant is not a disqualified person to receive such a license, as determined in accordance with the standards set forth in Penal Code 26202;
- Attest, under oath, the intention that they intend to spend time within the subsequent 12 months in the California jurisdiction to which they are applying;
- The applicant is at least 21 years of age, and presents clear evidence of the person’s identity and age, as defined in Penal Code 16400;
- In connection with Penal Code section 26150, subdivision (a)(2) or section 26155, subdivision (a)(2), a Nonresident Applicant may present a valid driver’s license or valid identification card issued by the Nonresident Applicant’s state of residence, in lieu of a valid California driver’s license or identification card. If the Nonresident Applicant’s driver’s license or identification card does not set forth the applicant’s current address, the applicant can—consistent with the policy for state resident applicants—submit other reliable documentation, including current utility bills, current out‐of‐state CCW license with a correct address, or other reasonable indicia of ongoing residency matching the address provided on the application;
- The course of training prescribed by the licensing authority has been completed.
- Select an in-person or virtual appointment at time of application submission.
Character References
You will need to provide the names and contact information of three persons willing to serve as references. One of the three must be a person described in Penal Code section 273.5, subdivision (b) (your spouse, or former spouse, your cohabitant or former cohabitant, your fiancée, or someone with whom you have, or previously had, an engagement or dating relationship, or the mother or father of your child), if applicable. At least one of the three must be your cohabitant if applicable.
Training Required
After a thorough background investigation, the applicant will be contacted by the CCW Coordinator to proceed with firearms training from a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department approved Training Provider. Applicants should not complete firearms training UNTIL instructed to do so by the CCW unit. Applicants must successfully complete a firearms training course, per Penal Code 26165.
TRAINING MUST BE COMPLETED FROM ONE OF THE LASD APPROVED FIREARM TRAINING PROVIDERS (SEE LIST BELOW)
NEW Applicants must complete a training course no less than 16 hours.
RENEWAL Applicants must complete a training course no less than 8 hours
The course shall include instruction on firearm safety, firearm handling, shooting technique, safe storage, legal methods to transport firearms and securing firearms in vehicles, laws governing where permitholders may carry firearms, mental health and mental health resources, and laws regarding the permissible use of a firearm.
All firearms shall be inspected by the training provider to ensure that they are safe, operable, and in compliance with CA state and federal regulations.
Applicants must complete and pass a live fire course with each firearm to be listed on the license – LASD allows up to 3 firearms on applicant’s CCW license. APPLICATIONS TO MODIFY YOUR CCW LICENSE ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED
What is a modification? A legal name change, address change, or addition/deletion of a firearm from your CCW license.
Please note: It is not necessary to apply for a CCW modification if you are only updating your employment information. This can wait until you renew your CCW.
- CCW modifications will be restricted to TWO firearm modifications per CCW term. For example, a Standard 2-year CCW license may be modified to add/remove firearms no more than twice during that 2-year term.
- After two firearm modifications, CCW holders should wait until it is time to renew their CCW before requesting additional changes. Exceptions may be made for exigent circumstances.
- Address changes and name changes are required by law and do not count towards the two allotted modifications per year.
- You cannot modify your CCW if it is within 90 days of expiring. This is the renewal window.

MODIFICATION FOR FIREARM CHANGE (ADD/DELETE),
Please submit the following certification documents WITH YOUR MODIFICATION APPLICATION SUBMISSION:

Valid Driver’s license or Identification card.

Training certification from an authorized LASD training provider. Only certificates dated within 30 days of the date of the modification request will be accepted. No exceptions.

List all weapons you want listed on your CCW license even if they are on your previous CCW. Only the weapons listed will be included on your CCW license.
MODIFICATION FOR ADDRESS CHANGE:
Please submit the following items WITH YOUR APPLICATION SUBMISSION:

Valid Driver’s License or Identification card that reflects the new address. If you have updated your Driver’s License, please submit a copy of a receipt from DMV showing a change of address has been submitted.

A copy of a recent utility bill in your name, reflecting your new address, showing full-time residency as stated in your application.
