  • 📍🟡 “I was very grateful when I was born a girl because I knew what my mission was going to be in the future when I became a doctor.” Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali was born in Klang, Selangor, on July 12, 1926, she was the sixth child out of ten siblings. Eventually, her family moved to Kuala Lumpur, where she began her education in Methodist Girls’ School and later, St Mary’s Girls’ School. Despite her childhood dream of pursuing journalism, her mother’s illness during the Japanese occupation redirected her path towards public health. After World War II, she began her commitment to the field as one of the first Malay women to enroll in King Edward VII College of Medicine on a scholarship. Then, she dedicated her early career to rural Kedah, eventually becoming the first woman medical officer in the state’s Maternal and Child Health Department in 1974. Through her initiatives, the state’s infant mortality rate fell from 75 per 1000 live births to six. Alongside her role as the Prime Minister's spouse from 1981 to 2003 and 2018 to 2020, she leaves behind a legacy of maternal health, anti-narcotics advocacy and public service. She was a dedicated patron, holding enduring leadership roles with the Malaysian Girl Guides Association, the Malaysia Medical Association Foundation, the Badminton Association of Malaysia, and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Beyond her public and professional duties, at age 86, she took up the violin once again, an instrument she first played at 16. She frequently performed to raise funds for charitable causes. #malaysianicon #malaysianews
