Bio

Hi there! 👋
I’m Toine, a 27-year-old student from Utrecht, The Netherlands 🇳🇱, currently wrapping up my Communication and Multimedia Design studies 🎓. My passion lies in UI/UX (web) design and concept creation, where I aim to build user-friendly, accessible, and innovative digital solutions ✨. Feel free to check out my portfolio to see my work! 🔗

Web accessibility is super important in my designs ♿ (think proper color contrast, font clamping for responsive typography, and using ARIA labels). My goal is to ensure inclusive and functional experiences for everyone.

Alongside my studies, I work at Uw Computerstudent 💻, helping provide IT assistance across the Netherlands, with a special focus on supporting seniors 👵👴. I also design and develop websites 🌐 for diverse clients like entrepreneurs, small businesses, and organizations. It’s a great way to apply my design principles to real-world projects and help clients shine online ✨.

I love being part of the WordPress community! 💙 You’ll find me providing feedback, reporting bugs 🐞, and contributing to making plugins translatable and localizable (i10n) on WordPress.org and GitHub. I often use tools like DeepL integrated with the WP.org glossary via the fantastic ‘WordPress Translation Filler Extended’ browser extension (big thanks to PTE/GTE Peter Smits for creating it! 🙏).

I’m also deeply involved with Elementor! 🎉 As a member of the Elementor Global Community Leaders program, I focus heavily on the localization (i10n) and translation (t9n) of all Elementor’s products, helping make them accessible to users worldwide 🌍. I enjoy using the builder to create dynamic websites and actively provide feedback to help improve it for everyone. Read more about this in my ‘WordPress Origin Story’.

My main WordPress contribution is translating plugins, themes, and more into Dutch 🇳🇱🗣️. So far, I’ve translated over 50 plugins (that’s more than 15,000 strings!). It’s incredibly rewarding to combine my love for design, accessibility, and community involvement this way. ❤️

WordPress Origin Story

My web journey began back in 2014 with Joomla 🤔. It was my first taste of a CMS, but I quickly realized it wasn’t the most intuitive or flexible platform for what I wanted to do 🚧. Updates felt slow, new features lacked spark, and the plugin options were… well, limited 📉.

By 2016, I decided it was time for a change and made the leap to WordPress! 🚀 I’ll admit, I initially avoided it, thinking the learning curve would be steep. Boy, was I wrong! 🤯 I found WordPress surprisingly easier to pick up and way more powerful than I’d expected 💪.

At first, I dove into popular ThemeForest themes (like The7, Avada, BeTheme) often paired with WPBakery (remember Visual Composer? 😉). While common, I soon hit their limitations: they weren’t well-optimized 🐌, scaling was tricky 📈❌, and they didn’t feel very future-proof ⏳. This sent me searching for better tools…

…and in 2018, I discovered Elementor! 🎉 It was a total game-changer. The drag-and-drop simplicity, live editing, and deep customization options were revolutionary ✨. For its time, it was hands-down the best page builder in the WordPress world 🥇. Elementor has kept evolving since then, adding advanced features like flexbox containers, nested elements, and loop grids, keeping it highly competitive 🚀.

Now, are there other strong contenders like Bricks and Breakdance? Absolutely! But for many projects, I still find Elementor offers the best overall balance 👌 of usability, powerful features, and flexibility.

That said, I do occasionally work on Divi sites now that Divi 5 has finally been released. But I still steer clients towards Elementor as a more robust and future-ready solution ✅. Let’s be honest, no tool is perfect (and Gutenberg can feel anything *but* intuitive sometimes 😅), but Elementor remains my go-to for building fast, visually stunning, and functional websites. Its ability to bridge the gap between design and development is invaluable 🛠️.

These days, I’m heavily focused on creating dynamic Elementor websites using Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) 💪. This powerful combination allows me to build scalable, high-performance ⚡, and truly bespoke web solutions tailored precisely to my clients’ unique needs 🎯.
