Eli Horne har delat dettaLast week I joined Lovable to lead product design. We moved our whole family from Brooklyn to Stockholm to do it, new apartment, new schools, a language none of us speak yet. That's a lot to ask of the people you love on the strength of a hunch, and I'm grateful every day they said yes. To explain why, I have to go back further than a week. I've loved computers for as long as I can remember. I'd wake up early just to beat my brother to the family computer, hunting and pecking through MS-DOS before I understood any of it. I got that from my grandfather, who loved technology the same way, not the acquiring of it, the exploring. Ham radios, new TVs, anything with a dial or a signal. I went to school for cinematography, for the visuals, the color, the light, the excuse to play with cameras and computers to tell stories. Then I got to New York and realized it would be years before I touched a camera. Mostly I'd be wrapping cables and fetching coffee. So I looked at what I'd actually been doing on my own time, out of love, and realized that was the career. That's how I ended up at Google, leading design on Docs, Sheets, and Slides. What I loved about that work was simple: a surface where someone shows up with an idea and leaves with something real, something they can share. Lovable feels like coming home. Anyone can build almost anything they can think of now. This week I've been drinking from the firehose, and what's struck me most is that we live this internally too, not just for customers. I can self-serve my own usage data, spin up a new feature, and ship it in fifteen minutes. No ticket, no handoff, just the idea and the tool. A couple days ago I found this on the kitchen table. My daughter had drawn a phone out of paper and pencil, cameras and all, and stuck Lovable stickers on the back. Nobody asked her to. Somewhere between the boxes and the new school, she'd decided this thing was hers too. We're hiring across design. If you've been circling this space, let's talk. Eli Horne har lagt upp dettaAfter two and a half years, I'm leaving Maven Clinic. Still weird to type. Maven does something most companies only claim to do. It actually shows up for people during some of the most significant moments of their lives. Fertility. Pregnancy. Postpartum. Menopause. That matters, now more than ever. Leading design here has been the most meaningful work of my career. When the product you're designing helps someone through their first pregnancy, or a fertility journey that took years, or a loss they didn't see coming -- the bar for getting it right is different. The team understood that. Curious, caring, sharp. Genuinely good at their jobs. I'm going to miss them. Looking back: a partnership with ŌURA Ring, a cycle tracker built to compete with the best consumer apps, Maven's first AI-enabled features in partnership with NVIDIA, a Sex Ed pop-up in Gansevoort Square, a full marketing website relaunch. I'm genuinely proud of what this team shipped. Jason Lee took a chance on me and gave me real room to work. That's rarer than it sounds. Kalliope White was my co-conspirator in something that quietly became one of my favorite projects -- crash landing Claude into Maven and helping people unlock creativity and productivity with AI. Turns out that was really fun. I'm taking July off. There's a move involved. In the meantime, I'm doing the thing where I backfill my own role. Yes, I wrote the job description. Yes, I tried to set the bar impossibly high, because our members need the best. Maven is hiring a Head of Design. It's a rare role -- you'd be leading both product design and brand design, which doesn't come up often. Guess I should mention it more than zero times. Seats Stationers is a stationery and art supplies store that I launched. I have always loved stationery; I fell in love with my first pen at the age of 12, it was a Pilot G-tec, 0.4mm, which I still use up to this day. And don't look in my cabinets, there are many, many, many notebooks waiting in the wings for their turn to be filled with little drawings, notes, and clippings of mementos from life. These days, when most ideas live and die inside a screen, I want to help people remember the joy of doodling in a notebook, writing down a fleeting idea, and coloring outside of the lines with watercolors, crayons, and markers. Eli Horne har lagt upp dettaMost design quality problems aren't skill problems. They're coordination problems. Teams can't improve what they haven't agreed to define. Without a shared picture of what good looks like, raising the bar is just an argument. With one, it's work. Katie Dill built a practice at Stripe called "walk the store" - using your product as a user would, on a real cadence, with a log. What made it powerful wasn't the audit. It was what the audit created: a shared definition of the baseline. Once a team agrees on where things actually stand, investment decisions stop being negotiated from different starting points. At Maven I built on this with CARE audits - Continuous Audit and Refinement Effort. We mapped our core member flows, graded them against a shared rubric, and used that picture to direct investment. The rubric forced the conversation most teams skip: what does "good enough" actually mean here, and what does "great" look like? Decision logs work the same way. At Stripe these were called gavel blocks - a record of what was decided, why, and by whom. Settled things stay settled. Both practices do the same thing: externalize context that would otherwise live in people's heads, come out sideways in reviews, or get relitigated in meetings. Quality at scale isn't about hiring better designers. It's about building the conditions where a team can see clearly, agree quickly, and keep moving.

Eli Horne har delat dettaAI tools have removed the question "can I build this?" Describe something and it gets built. The constraint is gone. Which creates a new problem: the agent doesn't push back. It just builds. I kept falling into this trap - feature after feature, none of them wrong exactly, none of them helping me ship. So I built a skill for it. Ship Coach is a Claude skill that triggers contextually and interrupts you when you're overbuilding. It's grounded in YC, Paul Graham, Shape Up, and indie hacker thinking. It asks the questions you're avoiding: does this serve your core user? What would you cut if you had to launch tomorrow? The most interesting thing about Claude skills isn't invoking them. The part where you've internalized how things are done so completely that it stops feeling like a choice. It feels like physics. The workflows. The review cycles. The tools you reach for first. You've done them so many times they're invisible. I keep catching myself, and people around me, reaching for the old path first, even when a better one might exist. The question I keep asking is whether we're doing it because it's actually right, or just because we know what we'll get. Lately, it's the latter. Wrote something about this, link in comments.

First, I reached out to Sitra and Aalto University (my old university in 🇫🇮 ), and pretty quickly we had a plan in place: employ 10 students for the summer to solve challenges given by public sector entities. Just a week ago I flew to Helsinki and witnessed students presenting their full-stack product solutions. Next, we wanted to do something for the home of Lovable 🇸🇪. And we thought: what would we have wanted when we were students ourselves, and how can we give back? And today it's finally real: every university student in Sweden gets Lovable for free until the end of the year. Access for everyone, whatever you study, whatever your idea, you can now build it. 🚀 We also want to help everyone get started, and therefore we hit the road: eight campuses from Lund to Umeå, teaching students to build with AI. And everything kicks off today in Stockholm with buildathon at KTH (+500 students have signed up 🔥). Building with AI is the skill of the next generation, and I can't wait to see the ideas, businesses and builders that come out of Sweden this fall. Eli Horne har gillat dettaEli Horne har gillat dettaOne year at Lovable. I joined as roughly employee 60, the only accountant in the building. We’re now around 400, and almost everything has changed. A year ago, I thought improving the finance function meant implementing better systems and building better spreadsheets. Now, instead of looking for software to solve every problem, we build it ourselves. We have apps for our close, accruals, flux analysis, AI consumption and all the other pieces of accounting that used to live across spreadsheets and traditional systems. We’re not just making the old way faster. We’re starting to build a genuinely new way of doing accounting. As an accountant and a woman who never thought of herself as someone who builds software, it feels pretty special to be helping shape that future. It has been an amazing year, and so much fun!

Eli Horne har gillat dettaEli Horne har gillat dettaInvisible Interfaces 🔥 The most interesting products I've fallen in love with this year don't really have an interface. You don't need to open another app, go through another onboarding, or find another dashboard. You simply reach it the way you'd reach a friend, through a text thread or a phone call, and on the other side sits an agent that is connected to all the tools you use every day, such as your email, your calendar, your messages, your accounts. Then you can simply tell it what you need and it goes off and does it for you. Replies drafted, trips arranged, subscriptions cancelled, appointments moved. The apps it operates are all still there, humming underneath, but you just never see them anymore. They disappeared. Watching this happen has clarified something I've been thinking about for a while. We are witnessing a new step being inserted in front of every interface we've ever designed. In the last years, using software meant going to the software, opening the app, learning its layout, and navigating its particular logic. Now you increasingly interact with one interface that is connected to all the other interfaces, and the moment that layer works well enough, the interfaces behind it begin to fade from view. They don't fade because they got worse, but because nobody is looking at them anymore. That is what an invisible interface actually means to me, and it has nothing to do with minimalism or fewer buttons. It means that the interface of the product you built, the thing your team obsessed over and tested and polished for years, basically becomes a back-end, and its primary user is no longer a person but an agent acting on a person's behalf. I would encourage every designer to sit with that thought for a moment, because it is genuinely destabilizing. The craft I grew up in assumed a human on the other side of the glass, and every decision we made about hierarchy, contrast, motion, or copy existed to help that person see, understand, and act. When the entity clicking through your product is an agent, most of that craft becomes invisible to the one doing the clicking, and your beautiful checkout flow gets traversed in two hundred milliseconds by something that has no appreciation for your easing curves. This doesn't mean design is no longer relevant, but it does mean it is migrating to another level. The interface layer of an individual service is turning into something closer to a protocol, which needs to be legible, structured, operable, and honest about its state. Designing for machines is still design, just in a different form. The human-facing craft, the part of our work that earns love and loyalty, moves up a level to wherever the person actually is, and increasingly the person is sitting in one conversation that touches everything.
