Amit Ray posted thisToday I read about a founder who was depressed that his startup turned out to be a 'glorified service business'. I run one such service business and, actually, we should be glorifying them. First and foremost, service businesses make money. There is no complex unit economics math, no tortuous adjusted-EBITDA calculations to demonstrate non-existent profits, no circular financing, no runway to run out of and nobody's money burning other than your own and maybe that of a bank. A service business makes money or it shuts down quietly, living with pride and dying with dignity. Service businesses hire people. Yes, the best ones automate and AI-fy, but you can't provide a service without staff. So they hire, and develop and retain and actually feel bad when a talented employee leaves. Service businesses make products consumable and user-friendly. Restaurants turn groceries into quality meals. System integrators turn software into solutions. Financial consultants turn interest rates into wealth. Service businesses do something of immediate value. Yes, product companies build the future, but services address the present (where we all currently live). Service businesses deeply understand their customers. Products do 'user research'. So if you're running a service business, take a moment to pat yourself on the back. You drive the economy, you help your customers, you provide financial support to large numbers of households - and you do it by burning nothing (other than maybe midnight oil). There is glory in running a service, even if it's not glorified.

Amit Ray posted thisYoutube is changing the way it counts views. So your videos will shortly look like they are going viral. In a week or two your video views will count from the moment a video is clicked rather than after a few seconds. This is likely to make your videos suddenly look much better. The distinction will be shown as views (any click) and engaged views (clicks that watched for a bit). It's what they did with shorts a few months ago, when my clients thought they were suddenly going viral, only to find everyone else is too! Enjoy the boost while it lasts :)

Amit Ray shared thisMy first job was as a programmer and, later, a project manager. Testing was a huge part of both roles. But you couldn't just spot-check things and call it a day. You had to have a test plan, with test scenarios and then each scenario had to have test cases to check every combination of things that users could enter and the expected results. It all added up pretty quickly. For example, a single form might have 8 fields, each of which might have 3-4 options or space to enter text or numbers. The entry conditions of each field had to be tested and then the overall result of that form entry had to be tested with every permutation. For a single form of 8 fields, this could mean THOUSANDS of entry permutations to be tested (eg 3 options for each of 8 fields is 3^8 = 6,561). And the form had to be tested EACH TIME anything changed eg if someone found a bug somewhere else which affected this form. It was enough to bring you to tears. I don't know how QA and testing teams did it. I did it because it had to be done. And today I tested an 8-input, multi-option form with 21,600 test cases in seconds. Claude wrote the test cases, performed the tests and reported the results. I made coffee. (For me, not for Claude.) -------- What am I building? Amit Ray liked thisAmit Ray liked this“So, when are you going to retire?” I get asked this often. I’m almost 51. Which is an odd age. Young enough to be told I have “so much ahead of me”. Old enough for someone to ask if I’ve thought about retirement. Usually in the same conversation. I have. I’ve thought about it very seriously. I would like to retire from meetings first. Then PowerPoint decks. Then the human race. Writing can come later. I’ve been doing it for about thirty years. Ads, scripts, headlines, speeches, names, decks, captions. I’ve written things I’m proud of and things I would happily pay money to have removed from Google. I’ve spent years arguing over individual words. Now AI can produce 200 of them while I’m still deciding whether the first one should be “So”. Very humbling. But here’s the awkward bit. I don’t think I can retire from writing. Because I don’t really write only when I’m writing. I rewrite menus, billboards, signs at the airport. I rewrite a WhatsApp message before sending it and then rewrite it again because apparently “haha” has emotional consequences. Someone says something funny and I remember it. Someone says something sad and I remember it longer. A stranger tells me something on a flight and, three days later, I’m still thinking about what they said. This is what happens when your profession gets into your bloodstream. You stop having experiences. You have material. It’s awful. You can’t just watch a sunset. There’s always a tiny voice asking whether it needs a line. You can’t have a bad day. Some part of you is already thinking, good opening, though. So perhaps retirement isn't the end of writing. Perhaps it's the end of being useful with it. That sounds rather lovely. So yes, I might retire. I might grow tomatoes. I might travel. I might sit in a café every afternoon and become one of those old men who complains about the chairs. But I know what will happen. I'll see a terrible sign. I'll take out a pen. And thirty years of professional conditioning will kick in. I'll rewrite the fucking thing. Then I'll go home. And write about it. Yeah, so the writing paychecks might end one day. But, this bloody curse never ends. #justsaying #copywriting #writing
