Thai Enquirer News Summary – April 29, 2026 Durian Drama The drama of selling the ‘premium’ durian fruit at 100 Baht/fruit continues to haunt the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce – Suphajee. The Deputy PM remains the talk of the country as farmers continue to lambast her for selling a fruit that costs 150 Baht/kg (on an average durian weighs 3 kgs) at 100 Baht/3 kg fruit. The planned online sale took place yesterday but only for ‘limited’ number of fruits, thus cementing Suphajee’s image as good at ‘marketing’ and ‘content creating’. No to collecting money for those going out of Thailand Social media has come out to blast the government of Anutin Charnvirakul for the planned collection of ‘tourism tax’ that was proposed by the Minister of Tourism & Sports that all Thais would be charged 1,000 Baht/trip for any Thai national going out of Thailand for tourism purposes. Surasak Phancharoenworakul, minister of tourism, said that this was an old rule that can be used and that was all that was needed to start the criticism against the government. This could generate up to 10 billion Baht/year to use for domestic tourism. Suphajee had to come out to calm the situation and said that this proposal has not come to her yet as she’s in charge of the Ministry of Tourism. International Tourism sees a 3.4% dip The Ministry of Tourism and Sports reported the tourism situation from January 1 to April 26, 2026. Thailand had a cumulative total of 11.36 million foreign tourists, a decrease of 3.40% compared to the same period last year, while generating revenue of 555,631 million Baht. The top five countries of origin were: Opposition lambasts charging higher use of electricity prices to subsidize lower users The opposition parties have come out to say that they oppose the move by the government of Anutin Charnvirakul to charge those using more than 500 units/month to subsidize those who are using less than 200 units/month. The opposition says that any household (especially middle class) have 2 air conditioners and that takes the usage to more than 500 units/month. Thai Enquirer News Summary – April 28, 2026 Smelly Controversy Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce - Suphajee Suthumpun, is in hot waters all day yesterday after her surprise and supposedly ‘masterstroke’ to sell durians at 100 Baht per fruit. Social media has been buzzing with farmers calling for her to look at why such cheap pricing was being promoted and why is the Ministry of Commerce not promoting 100 Baht/sack for the fertilizers used in the farms for the durians. Independent Senators join Opposition parties to watch over NACC The so-called independent agency – National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) is now being kept an eye over by the ‘Independent’ Senators (a handful of them as more than 160 of the 250 senators are backed by Bhumjai Thai party). The NACC is exonerating - Saksayam Chidchob, the brother of the real boss of Bhumjai Thai party – Newin Chidchob. “No’ meeting with Scammers The Anti-Online Scam Operation Center (AOC) has issued a statement addressing a viral social media post alleging that Pol Lt Gen Jirabhop Bhuridej, Assistant National Police Chief and deputy director of the Police Cyber Taskforce, had dined with a close aide of Cambodian tycoon and senator Kok An. The pix of them dining in Siam Paragon in 2024 appeared online prompting the response from AOC. Singapore to participate in Land Bridge The local Thai media seem to be gullible to the ‘diplomatic’ talks from Singapore that the island state wants to ‘participate’ in the ‘Land Bridge’ project. Thailand’s proposed Land Bridge project drew interest from Singapore during talks between Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and visiting Singaporean Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office. Singapore’s key officials in the past have been dead against the proposed ‘Land Bridge’ project as it will kill Singapore’s shipping hub status. Flip Flop of Free Visa to enter Thailand Thailand is looking at reverting to 57 countries for the visa free entry from the 93 at the moment.
