Lars Fjeldsoe-Nielsen shared thisResilience is the most coveted leadership skill for 2026. And for good reason. It's not a fixed trait. It’s a practice shaped by: ▸ Mindset ▸ Adaptability ▸ Commitment to your own well-being. I've climbed the Matterhorn. Crossed the Sahara by motorcycle. Raced 24 hours at Silverstone for charity, breaking my elbow in the process. Yet the hardest challenge I've ever faced? Learning to prioritize my health persistently. Early in my career, I neglected myself. Red Bulls in the morning and Red Bulls at night. True to my 'all or nothing, now or never' mindset, I kept pushing myself to the limit without considering the consequences. It was my single biggest mistake. It took years to learn that true resilience is less about enduring challenges. It's about thriving despite them. It's about growing. It's possessing the clarity and stamina to navigate high-pressure moments, growing rather than burning out. Today, my approach is different. Meditation and fitness are my North Stars, keeping me grounded and energized mentally and physically. I’m playing the long game, whether in the boardroom or on a mountain. Ever learning, ever aware. For anyone early in their career, don't make the same wellness mistakes I did. Your company's most valuable asset is you. What mindset is producing resilience in you?

Lars Fjeldsoe-Nielsen shared thisI was laid off on my wife's birthday. She was 8½ months pregnant. It triggered a visa cancellation. My confidence took a hit. It was the second time I'd been laid off in a short period. I assumed it was my fault. What would I tell my friends and family? How would I pay the bills? Years later, I learned the truth. My employer, Skyhook Wireless, was in a lawsuit with Google over data ownership. My termination had nothing to do with my performance. That realization reshaped my leadership views. It made me more empathetic and resilient. Sometimes the events that feel most personal are entirely structural. Most setbacks aren't verdicts on your ability. People carry invisible stress you know nothing about. What I didn't see at the time was that those layoffs were gifts. ↳ Without them, I wouldn't have left Skyhook. ↳ Without them, I wouldn't have joined Dropbox. Many people won't leave unless they're told to. In fact, many people overstay. With time, the events that feel traumatic in the moment become the driving forces that shape who you become. If you're a founder navigating a setback right now, remember that the story you tell yourself isn't the whole truth. Don't be ashamed. Don't hide it. Just own it. What's one piece of advice you'd give to your younger self about resilience?

The fundamental issue with education isn't innovation. It's that the system is antiquated. We've built incredible tools, but most students can't reach them. The 5% who are engaged? The majority was high achievers from affluent families. So the students who need help most aren't the ones using these tools. Now factor in the AI boom in education. AI has the potential to transform education more than any technology in history. Personalized learning. Instant feedback. Access to world-class instruction from anywhere. Balderton's Revolut journey is a masterclass by Daniel Waterhouse and Tim Bunting on how outliers can define an entire ecosystem. When I joined Balderton in 2015, coming straight from Silicon Valley, Europe felt like the Valley during the pre-iPhone era. Yet, Revolut and Nik Storonsky’s ambition show how far European entrepreneurial culture and drive have come and how much the ecosystem has matured. In this case, the real differentiators were Nik’s relentless drive and determined approach. He not only predicted the future he created it. This is a reminder that capital follows creativity and conviction, and conviction is built on founder ambition and authentic drive. Same theme, investing is all about people. Over the past decade in Europe we’ve seen founder ambition scale from country to continent to globe. Meanwhile the Valley has now had their ChatGPT LLM moment (reminding us of what the iPhone kickstarted). My prediction is that Revolut is just getting started.
