In theory, it’s a great motivator. In reality? Not only did Fairgame serve up amazing fun; there was insanely good street food, cocktails, craft beer, and plenty of sweet treats 🍨 Congrats to Zach, the day's top scorer and proud new owner of his prize, Candy, the giant bear 🐻 Then, onto dinner at Dishoom Shoreditch, where we enjoyed a delicious feast and drinks before hitting the town. And the rest is (thoroughly documented 🎥💃) history... We honestly have no idea how we will ever top this next year - it couldn't have been better. In two days time I’ll be setting off for the Isle of Scilly to compete and the nerves are setting in… We're training 6 times a week (3 of those out on the water) and I won't lie, there are mornings where my arms are absolutely done! But when you're in a boat with people you trust, pushing towards the same goal, the hard sessions are what you look forward to. Because you know what you're building towards. And finding brilliant optometrists isn't that different from building a championship crew. You need people who are skilled, but more than that, you need people who care. But even when you’re swept up in the day to day, it’s important to ask: what should your job be giving back to you? 🤔 From the conversations I’m having, it seems to come down to a few things: 👉 Feeling valued (not just filling a gap on the rota) 👉 Having the time to do your job properly 👉 Real support from your team 👉 A sense of balance outside of work 👉 And somewhere you can actually see a future I think sometimes in optometry (and probably a lot of professions), it’s easy to keep going without really checking in with yourself. So maybe this is your reminder to pause for a sec and ask… am I getting back what I need from where I work right now? So we kept in touch now and then, had the odd catch-up about how things were going, and left it there. Then the right opportunity came up and everything clicked into place. Why staffing flexibility matters: EHCP funding can move, permanent salaries can’t. When a pupil with an EHCP moves, their top-up funding usually follows, but a permanent staff member’s salary doesn’t. With a permanent hire, the salary cost stays, even if the funding doesn’t. With agency staff, you can: ✅ Scale staffing down if a pupil leaves…and back up if another arrives ✅ Use temp-to-perm, our most popular option, to keep great staff once you already know they’re the right fit ✅ Avoid committing too early to someone unproven For schools, that’s financial flexibility. Recruitment is changing faster than most agencies are willing to admit. CV scanning, manual shortlists, and gut-feel interviews don’t scale — and they don’t compete with AI that can read thousands of profiles in seconds, match skills objectively, and remove bias from first-round screening. This isn’t a threat to recruiters. It’s a warning. A CEO of a PE backed tech recruitment firm shared a very interesting point about verifying a company's performance and billings. When speaking to market or viewing on online, you will hear and see a lot of noise and activity around performance - but can you verify this? A very simple and quick way to verify a business is to check their company accounts. A small businesses will not be audited. For a business to be audit, they must fit 2 of the following 3: Criteria for an audit: - Turnover > £10.2m - Balance sheet of more than £5.1 million - Employees > 50 I knew this point but it's easy to overlooked at time times If you interviewing with a business and they are not audited, (especially an interim focused business) this is a very clear sign that they are small business and their revenue may not be as high as they portray.

Over the past few days, we’ve shared an education recruitment agency case study and a client testimonial, but here’s something we’ve learned working closely with UK recruitment businesses at RPO Arena - Empowering Businesses With Skilled Talent: Outsourcing doesn’t fail because of location. It fails because of the lack of structure, communication, and expectations, i.e. clarity. Most agency owners we speak to initially worry about: 1. Compliance understanding 2. Candidate communication quality 3. Time zone alignment 4. Day-to-day management oversight Completely fair concerns.
