A U.S. subsidiary of the Thomson Corporation has acquired The Institute for Scientific Information. The Thomson Information/Publishing Group in Stamford, CT bought privately held ISI for over $210 million. Thomson bought JPT Publishing, whose largest subsidiary is ISI. ISI is considered one of the world's largest commercial providers of scientific research data.
According to Publishers Weekly, JPT bought ISI back in 1988 for $24 million. At the time, ISI was producing scientific titles and abstracts in print format and losing about $4 million a year.
